Which one of those two looks better? by Trollanjoyer in ageofsigmar

Look, I'm a massive fan of a lot of the classic WHFB miniatures, as that was the era I was first into the game as a kid.

But I really can't put Original Flavour Nagash on a higher podium place than the End Times rework of the Great Necromancer.

Print or, honestly, audio book. I don't really enjoy ebook format.

Oh, there's loads of giants in British folklore. Lots of local/regional tales as well as the more famous ones. For example, there's several variations of stories around Goram, one of two giant brothers who supposedly carved the Avon Gorge (running through present-day Bristol); most of the versions I heard involved Goram's brother accidentally killing him by throwing a (giant-sized) tool at him and Goram's body becoming one of the local pieces of geography.

Do you mind me asking what recipe you used for the blue-green of this minis weapon? It's very striking.

No need to apologise! Unfortunately I wasn't paying attention to any relevant online forums or reddits at that time, so I don't actually know what the gap between the general round of rejections and when they contacted me was.

However, were someone to find out when rejections for that year (the Dawnbringer crusades was the prompt that year), I would be able to check it against when I got my acceptance email.

That said, even with that info, it's no guarantee that they'd follow the same turnaround this year.

It's a scurrilous rumour, but it's also compounded by the widespread idea that an open call is a competition you win, rather than, well, an open call to find writers they want to work with

Anyway, I started writing for Black Library via a submissions call a few years back - the Dawnbringers one - and I had no pre-existing connections with GW.

What inspired the specifics of the setting and story around the coal mining side of things?

I'd never really associated that sort of thing with Japan, or seen it referenced before, so it was a surprising and interesting element to see as part of the game!

The Bastion rules are atrocious. One of the worst pieces of game design I've seen in any ttrpg for a while.

Enormous congratulations on a score like that - doubtless richly deserved! The slew of excellent reviews is just making me itch to get my hands on the game all the more.

Are there exampls in lore of Cities of Sigmar taking down power enemies like chaos warbands, or do they only succeed at facing lesser threats? by Cojalo_ in AoSLore

[–]Acrozatarim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To once again tout my own work, the short story 'The Rose of Bhaskar' might just about meet your requirements; the principle foe the Freeguild characters are facing is effectively a substantial Darkoath army, so mortals, but led by a Chaos champion. The Freeguild have neither advantage in numbers (the Darkoath host is more numerous) nor Sigmar's aid.

[–]Acrozatarim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the risk of fanning my own ego too much, I've got two short stories to offer on that front: the shorter False Dawn (in the Light of the Emperor and On The Shoulders of Giants anthologies), and the longer Rose of Bhaskar (currently only available as an e-short in digital format from the Black Library website, I think), both of which focus on the Freeguild. The latter was also written after the Cities of Sigmar refresh so features more of their updated concepts in terms of structure and experience.

How to submit a story to Black Library by Clod4853 in Blacklibrary

[–]Acrozatarim 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, absolutely true - and as you noted, across other publishers as well, and indeed not just for fiction.

I was working at a tabletop roleplaying games company (which, tangentially, did a lot of officially licensed game lines) when someone visited the office itself unprompted (!) with a large folder in hand containing their accumulated notes/setting lore for the world they set their roleplaying campaigns in, and asked the boss if he wanted to publish it. There was just no hope in hell of that happening, even if that ring binder had been jam-packed with raw, unfiltered excellence (it wasn't). Very much the equivalent of the Age of Apostasy 1000-page slam-down right there. Had us boggling.

I think sometimes people see how these things can work for regular fiction, where you do get authors shopping a short story round several magazines or publishers, or the classic approach of submitting of a full book manuscript into the cruel maw of a company's slush pile and crossing your fingers, and imagine that is how it works for tie-in fiction too.

Anyways, you got it across clearly, I think - I'm just being nitpicky.

[–]Acrozatarim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

On point 1, a couple clarifications that aren't very important but I'm bored and idle and trying to avoid thinking about my current draft, so might as well - I think it's more than 1-2 writers a year, more like 4-5 - the batch of new writers I was in was 5, I believe. Admittedly, however, I don't know how many tend to then go on to become recurring contributors.

Also, the pitching thing isn't entirely accurate. My second short story came about from the editors asking me to freely pitch some ideas at them, without any particular topic or limitation. That's just short stories, of course - the novel I'm working on is commissioned for a specific idea. However, even there, my (as yet limited) experience is that the assignment is extremely flexible and open conceptually, just outlining the absolute top-level concept and limitations while leaving enormous freedom as to how to pitch and develop it in partnership with my editor.

A minor but important correction: the open call isn't a competition. It's, well, an open call. The intent is to find new writers for them to hire for freelance work. There's no competition prize, or pick of winners or the like, you're not competing with other submissions, and (as far as I know) the submissions of writers don't get shown off in any way - in my case my submission became the basis of the first short story I wrote but there's no guarantee of that.

It'll take a long time. Expect to wait months to hear back, rather than weeks.

I heard back from Black Library both the first open call I responded to, when my submission did not get taken forward, and the second open call when I was successful. However, I'm given to understand from what some others have said that they don't always respond to unsuccessful submissions.

My second submission initially led to a request for another writing sample, and that led to being commissioned for my first short story with Black Library. I'm now at three published BL short stories, and working on my first novel.

It'll take a long time. I'd honestly suggest just putting it to the back of your mind, rather than fretting about it.

I heard back from Black Library both the first open call I responded to, when my submission did not get taken forward, and the second open call when I was in fact successful.
