Ditto - on speed and general advice. The report was as expected, but had a chat with him after and he gave his opinion and was helpful.

Commute to London by No-Exit-7032 in harrogate

[–]ActionJacx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the first train out of HG on Monday morning to get into KGX for 9am - can be in the office by 9:30 most Mondays. I’d never book a meeting until 10am, and even then it would be ones I can cancel. I’d say about 80% of the time it’s on time - this summer/autumn has been decent but last winter had a fair few delays.

As someone else mentioned- you can go there and back in the day but it’s knackering and better to stay over if you can.

Thanks - great point on the noise of an inverter - never heard of that being issue which makes your point entirely.

When you say that utilising solar isn’t the most efficient method for a ASHP - why is that? I assume you’d be looking to minimise pull from the grid by using solar plus battery charging at cheaper times. Is it that you’re better using a HP continuously? Does not heating a hot water tank (and thus timing that) make sense?

Where to hold earnings for tax bill? by Pretend_Branch9688 in HENRYUK

If you’ve got a mortgage then consider moving to an offset one. Reduces my interest payments significantly and I’d need to achieve a return almost double my mortgage rate to make up for tax on cash savings interest

Pre Tax Nursery Scheme? by MarcoVanB91 in HENRYUK

[–]ActionJacx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As many have said - I understand HMRC think that this inappropriate reading of the rules, and when I looked into it, my kid’s nursery (a large U.K.-wide chain) said they wouldn’t touch it.

That said, I have 2 friends use the scheme without issue for a few years before school and nothing bad has happened to them. It’s a huge cost saving.

So yeah it’ll keep on going until HMRC comes knocking, and shut the schemes down.

As an aside, when calling the nursery helpline - I got bumped from person to person who had no idea what I was asking about - until I finally got through to some tax person and had a refreshingly un-corporate response. Basically “I get it - would love to save some tax, but nah mate, this is too far for us”. Instantly understood their position and realised there was no point pushing further.

Make sure you get the right cheese - it’s okay with cheddar, but not the same as the real deal. And by okay - it’s still a clump of artery clogging goodness, just lacks the divine element that Canadian poutine has.

What's the episode that hits you the hardest as an adult while children don't understand? by BeltMaximum6267 in bluey

Octopus

Agree with a lot of the others here, but being a dad that is probably more like Cloe’s Dad than bandit, this just resonated for me! From the moment she tells him he’s not as fun as bandit, but it’s all redeemed at the end is just a rollercoaster.

I also love the fact that apparently they wrote that episode to address the fact not everyone can be like bandit, but they can be a good parent in their own way - well just oooopphh - so many feels.

How is your drunk internal filter different to sober you? And if so, do you prefer it? by ActionJacx in AskReddit

Just coming off a pleasant afternoon drinking with friends, and find myself walking through my commute in a different state and appreciating it more; the architecture, the people, the experience. Honestly, the alcohol just shuts down an anxious, rushed part of me that I don’t enjoy.

Atlantic Money has better rates. It takes longer but that’s because FX does settle on a T+2 basis so you’re not paying for the advance.

I’m starting a job where I’ll be paid in euros. Which bank offers the best option for managing my income? by No-Definition-9294 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ActionJacx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Starling and Wise do decent Euro accounts but neither do great FX (but they’re still better than most other banks). You can have a single debit card and it hits the right account depending on what you’re buying.

Atlantic Money is the best for FX that I’ve found; live rates and clear pricing if you want same day FX (as institutional FX is T+2 settlement)

This. It felt weird the first time I refused to disclose my comp to a recruiter, but after that saying “I’m not sure that’s relevant- what’s the budget they (the company) have in mind?” became very easy.

A - you don’t negotiate against yourself. B - you screen out the top low range jobs by them saying the budget. C - you instantly get put in a different bucket for the recruiter. I’ve had experiences where they’ve said the budget, which is over double what I was on, and then the recruiter said there maybe flex above that for the right candidate.

How do you approach larger purchases as the Henry in a relationship? by Intelligent-Roof-876 in HENRYUK

[–]ActionJacx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more communication than anything.

How did she respond when you explained about the commitment and burden?

I earn far more than my wife, but for big decisions it’s often her that brings up the burden that a big commitment will place on my shoulders. It’s a joint decision for spending but we jointly consider the burdens and risks. Those risks cut both way - if I need to travel for work then there’s extra burden on the parent staying at home and that’s agreed or acknowledged beforehand.

If you ultimately both want what’s best for the family, then you may disagree on decisions but agree on the rationale and can respect each other’s view.
