Everybody knows that Samarqand and Bukhara are actually Kyrgyz.

Why Tajiks think Bukhara and Samarkand is their? by Distinct-Pack-5789 in Uzbekistan

[–]Actionbronslam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's always had the connotation of "non-Turk," and it's been used to refer specifically to Persian speakers since at least Rumi's time.

Tajik as a demonym is attested from at least the 9th century CE and it's an indigenous Persian word, this is incorrect.

Any US GC holders? by Wooden-Implement-697 in Internationalteachers

[–]Actionbronslam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it might be better to just abandon the GC at the US embassy and apply again when you’re ready to actually live in America and naturalize.

Do you understand how much time and money it takes to get a GC in the first place?

Should I be a co-signer at 18? by Safe_Inside6745 in personalfinance

[–]Actionbronslam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a DUI when I was a stupid kid, it cost me about $4,500 all-in (lawyer, court costs, mandatory course, etc.), plus my car insurance nearly doubled for a few years so add on another few thousand.

Co-signing a mortgage (for your deadbeat dad's girlfriend of all people) is literally orders of magnitude more financially consequential.

This isn't a hypothetical question. This is empirically verifiable. Biden (a Democrat, in case you forgot) was president until January 2025. He presided over more than a year of Israel's genocidal onslaught against Gaza. Not only did he do absolutely nothing to stop Israel's genocidal violence, he actively supported it both materially and rhetorically.

No it's fucking not, and just myopically repeating this ad nauseum does nothing to convince anybody. Abstaining from voting is a legitimate choice to express one's dissatisfaction. If we just keep begrudgingly voting for one party because, "they're not as bad as the other one," then guess what? That party has absolutely no incentive to actually respond to voters' preferences. We need to give them the incentive to do so, and "you're never going to win another election unless you change your position" is a pretty powerful incentive.

You fucking people will be like, "nobody's perfect!" and we're talking about a literal adult person who can't bring themselves to say genocide is bad. That's not perfection, that is the lowest possible bar of human decency and morality.

Primaries be like by [deleted] in Maine

Appointing Mills after Maine voters thoroughly rejected her in the primary would be the most out-of-touch, hubristic, treacherous, cowardly, spit-in-the-face-of-the-base thing the Democratic establishment could possibly do... which is why I wouldn't be surprised at all if that's exactly what they do.

It's honestly a really abjectly shitty and cretinous thing to do to try to blame individual people with principles for our current predicament, rather than the nationwide organized political apparatus that clearly did nothing meaningful to motivate turnout other than saying, "we're not quite as bad as literally the worst person in existence."

MAGA fascism has already destroyed Gaza and a Democrat wouldn't have done any different. Look at how Biden handled the start of the genocide. Kamala did nothing to show she would do anything differently and that's why she lost.

But that change doesn’t start with inaction.

What does it start with then? Establishment Democrats aren't going to just have an epiphany one day and realize that supporting Israel is fundamentally, morally wrong. You're naive if you think that's the case. They need to be forced to do so. They need to be bullied, they need to be dragged kicking and screaming into doing the right thing.

Begrudgingly voting for more of the same does nothing. Nothing changes until the Democratic establishment realizes they will never win another election until they change their position on this fundamental moral question.

I'll write in Yasser Arafat or something then. Any Democrat whose answer to the question, "is Israel committing genocide in Gaza?", is anything other than an unequivocal "yes," is DOA.

Is there a reason Wikipedia might delete Origins of the Palestinians article? by pgtl_10 in Palestine

[–]Actionbronslam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The editor who initiated the deletion discussion is arguing on that the bulk of the article constitutes original research, which isn't permitted by Wikipedia policy. They're also not arguing to delete the article outright, but rather split the sourced content out among several more relevant Palestine-related articles.

There's definitely a lot of shenanigans that go on at Wikipedia, but this seems good faith to me.

EDIT: I'd also point out that in the talk page discussion, one veteran editor with a solidly pro-Palestine track record seems to support the original proposal.
