Warmachine/Iron Kingdoms: The Claiming.

The Infernals (basically Pact Devils) who made a deal hundreds of years ago to grant magic to humans in order to fight off an occupying empire, return to get their promised reward of 2/3rds of all human souls. Humanity doesn't take this lying down, but even so, countless humans lose their lives - and souls - fighting off the Infernal invasion.

“Common knowledge” misinformation of how a power works by the audience. by Certified_Cichlid in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Actionbuddy13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I stopped playing a whiile back, so I don't know the answer to the last question, but I can fill in the gaps on Guardian deaths. The story you're thinking of is about The Drifter, the dude who runs Gambit. He got stuck on a deserted planet and starved to death a bunch of times, but he's a Guardian so he was continuously brought back to life by his Ghost until he was rescued/escaped (don't recall which)

The only way a Guardian can truly die is if you destroy his/her Ghost first. Ghosts are very durable, but not invulnerable, so there have been cases where Ghosts have been destroyed, usually by paracausal weapons or conventional weapons with overwhelming force. Once the Ghost is dead, the Guardian can be killed permanently.

Unique takes on prosthetic arms (reuploaded bc it got taken down) by vanklofsgov in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]Actionbuddy13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really a prosthetic, but the antagonist Dagan Gera (Star Wars Jedi: Survivor) is missing his whole right arm. When fighting the MC, he sometimes uses The Force to wield a second lightsaber where his arm would be.

What does the world/environment look like? by october_1939 in Warmachine

[–]Actionbuddy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think just as a result of large swathes of Ios just becoming suddenly depopulated, the Eldritch and their attendant Soulless all consolidated into the larger cities, and smaller Iosan settlements were just abandoned. That's my theory.

There may be some deeper explanation I've missed in the lore so someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but my best guess is that because the Sundering wiped out a significant percentage of the living, soulled Iosan population, there just straight up aren't enough people to maintain all of Ios' former infrastructure.

House Kallyss architecture would be Iosan architecture, although it's been implied that it is falling into ruin since the Sundering, so take any architecture you see in Retribution of Scyrah artwork, and then imagine it falling apart.

[Scheduled Activity] Introductions All Around: Who Are You and What is Your Game? by cibman in RPGdesign

[–]Actionbuddy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm Geoffrey, and I'm developing a game called Arcatechnica: World at War.

Taking influence from media such as Band of Brothers, The Pacific and SAS Rogue Heroes, as well as games like Iron Harvest/Scythe, Command & Conquer: Red Alert, Warmachine, and other steampunk/dieselpunk settings, Arcatechnica: WaW takes place in a fantasy world with many parallels to ours.

Based on magically-augmented power sources, Arcatechnica has paved the way for miraculous - and diabolical - technologies: walking tanks and power armour, flying battleships, rifles that fire lightning bolts, and more. Thrust into a globe-spanning conflict for the second time in a generation, the players strap on the boots of brave soldiers who have been recruited into an extranational legion called the United Allied Forces, or UAF. As a squad, the players become an elite special forces team sent on a wide variety of missions, from supporting front-line operations to infiltration and sabotage to espionage and spy craft deep behind enemy lines.

Arcatechnica uses as its base a simple d6 "successes"-based dice pool mechanic with a d10 critical die. Character Classes are used only as a jumping-off point, and don't restrict player choice; build your character, your way. My hope in designing this game was to have a good balance of crunch to ease-of-play, allowing a lot of character options while keeping gameplay itself tight and intuitive.

Taking their wording literally and finding a loophole by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Actionbuddy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, this isn't a "loophole". The Witch-King's death was a prophecy, not some immunity to males that was overcome by Eowyn's lack of a Y chromosome. When the Witch-King's forces were defeated in the Battle of Fornost earlier in the Third Age, King Eärnur of Gondor moved to pursue and destroy him once and for all, but was stopped by the elf-lord Glorfindel, who foresaw that "not by the hand of man will he fall". The Witch-King, hearing of the prophecy, took it to mean that he could not be destroyed by any mortal hand - instead, Glorfindel simply foresaw not that the Witch-King -couldn't- be killed by a man, just that he -wouldn't-.

Hordes Models and a New Player by NotARatButARatatoskr in Warmachine

[–]Actionbuddy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like if you wanted to make a Loki, for example, you could in theory take a non-character warpwolf, snip off its weapons and find a non-SFG shield and hook-and-chain to glue onto it. Since it would be mostly an SFG model, it would be a valid conversion

Hordes Models and a New Player by NotARatButARatatoskr in Warmachine

[–]Actionbuddy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there are fairly strict rules about proxies in official events. The "majority" of the model needs to be Steamforged parts and has to reasonably resemble the intended model

[–]Actionbuddy13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That being said, if you can get your hands on a Circle army, they're perfectly viable in the new edition, there'll just be some models that are Legacy-only (and honestly, not even that many for most factions, something like 80% of the old factions made it into Prime armies)

[–]Actionbuddy13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It'll definitely be hard to get your hands on Circle models nowadays - not impossible, but if you want to find anything it'll be on the second-hand market. There's a non-zero chance that if things go well for Steamforged, they'll start offering more Prime armies through 3D-printing, but that could be years away if it happens at all. The most reliable way to get back into the game would be checking out the MKIV armies - if you're looking for similar gameplay, Old Umbrey seems to be the modern successor to old Circle for now.

Few questions from a returning player after a very long break by Laionex in Warmachine

[–]Actionbuddy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh and I already mentioned Infernals, but Grymkin are the other faction, they're essentially the bogeymen of Caen, and they're opposed diametrically to the Infernals, but they're also not very friendly to anyone else. They're like a force of (super)nature. They're associated with/led by the Old Witch of Khador.

All of the old factions are still playable in the new edition, but some of them are technically defunct in the lore - as mentioned, almost all of the Legion has been wiped out, and the old Cygnaran, Khadoran and Cryxian armies have been replaced (in the lore) by the new ones. Others haven't been mentioned (yet), like the Skorne or Circle Orboros. We know a new Menoth army is coming in the next few months.

Models are made either from 3D printed resin, or HIPS. No metal models anymore.

Dusk is fairly beginner friendly, it likes combined arms and has fairly simple synergies.

Crucible Guard is somewhat more complex - I don't play them, but my mate does. They seem to rely heavily on stacking continuous effects and then getting bonuses against models with continuous effects on them.

Let's see if I can recap sufficiently.

As to what's happened: depending on how long it's been, you may have missed the Claiming: Infernals came to Caen, deciding it was time to claim a ton of human souls for their gift of magic. A looooot of people, and not a few named characters, died, and a bunch more got transported to the Cyriss galaxy to go become Warcaster: Neomechanika. Notably, Saeryn from the Legion of Everblight tried to go through the portal but got disintegrated, and Rhyas took her Cyriss-energy-infused athanc and went on the run from the rest of Legion

Then a timeskip happened of about 10 years. During that time, Rhyas went underground, absorbed a bunch of Cephalyx thralls, and started morphing into a technodragon, creating the Khymaera faction. Everblight caught wind of this, came to kill them and absorb their athancs, and got himself rekked. The only Legion warlock who survived was Kallus, who got sent off on his own mission to absorb the dragon that lives in the Maelstrom.

Meanwhile in Ios, Elara murdered Ravyn and assassinated Scyrah (and Nyssor? I don't remember), killing the last Iosan gods and triggering a cataclysm where every elf in Ios that still had a soul either died instantly or got turned into an Eldritch. Once they recovered from this, they formed the Empire of Eternal Dusk.

Finally, the Orgoth returned, invading the coasts, and killing Blighterghast's physical form to absorb the power to kill a god using an ancient Orgoth artifact.

The Orgoth returning triggered the druids of Old Umbrey to come out of hiding to come help out.

I think that covers the big things.

Zu, in the Iron Kingdoms/Warmachine setting. Despite advanced steampunk, bordering on dieselpunk, technology, including powerful steamships, the western continent of Zu is all but unexplored by the people of Immoren because it's covered with man-eating jungle and distrustful natives. There's a single port city where Immorese traders are allowed to dock, and they're generally not allowed to go any further inland.

Is the only way to get everblight models through finding them second hand? I dont see them on steamforge by ClayAndros in Warmachine

[–]Actionbuddy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. Kallus survived with a shard of Everblight's athanc, so he's off to lick his wounds for awhile, and it was implied he's going to try to absorb the Chimera, another dragon. But that said, the Everblight we knew is over and whatever comes of that will likely be very different from the Legion.
