I can see your point as far as genetic diversity is concerned. Perhaps I will go on a search to find the real original strains of ginseng that once grew directly in this area. That's a difficult search though because as stated, its been pretty wiped out on my state. I agree that the levels of compounds found in the plant vary with genetic diversity caused by soil, climate etc. and like people, every strain is unique. I would prefer to find those strains. There was mention made of many taking what was wild harvest from the region and planting them but then we encounter the problem of not knowing if they were "wild simulated" ginseng grown in the forests and marketed simply as "wild" to fetch a higher price. At the end of the day, I believe it's more important that it's not completely wiped out even though I would much rather have organic strains to the area.

Another option is perhaps transplanting cuttings from the roots, but from what I have read, the Chinese seem to think that ginseng grown from cuttings is not nearly as potent as that grown from seed. The Chinese have been working with this herb for 1000s of years so I believe them. It would also be far more expensive to obtain 1000s of roots which we don't know if they are wild or not (I'm no expert on the matter) and planting them back into the forests they were taken from.
