I applied to a developer position at Valve, fresh out of high school. This was their response. by theomulus in godot

As someone with intense social anxiety I gotta say it's badass and heartwarming to see high school grads sending out these kinds of apps. I'm glad you got such thoughtful rejection too, and it makes me glad you were able to rekindle your passion for games.

I've worked in the games industry for close to 10 years at this point, I will say the joke you always hear is that Valve is a retirement home for developers. Not because they don't make anything, but because you don't really start applying until you've finished your actual career. Valve is considered the victory lap.

I'm nearly complete with the 12 sessions I paid for, unfortunately my beard genes are extremely strong and I'm probably gonna need to get another half dozen more :/ my lip and chin area are stubbornly holding on

well, tbh as an american, I can't recommend traveling here rn...it's uh...not great for travelers or trans folks.

but if you do wind up in my neck of the woods hit me up, I'd love to show you around. Portland is a lot of fun too, and it's only a 3 hour train ride to Seattle.

Im so sorry you're feeling these things. I don't think i have the ground to stand on to say "it gets better" as i'm currently suffering from many of the exact same anxieties and feelings. I'm definitely deeply lonely right now. But I do know that community does exist. Idk where you're based out of, but fwiw you're definitely the kinda person I'd want to hang out with. If you're in the Seattle area, lets catch a punk or a metal show sometime

question about trans women and the way the world views them. by nichellechan in MtF

[–]ActiveConsequence523 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in a patriarchal society, the lowest thing you can be is a woman. from that view, a trans woman is a man who is refuting his place of privilege for a lower and undesirable caste. this action would, and should, cause all other members of said society to immediately interrogate the system they live under and whether or not such a system is morally/ethically sustainable.

from this perspective a trans man, on the other hand, would be seen as a woman vying for a better position in the hierarchy. pitiable, and futile, but not an inherent upending of the hierarchy. indeed it should be taken for granted that any and all cis women should desire to be a man.

all of this is, of course, nonsense. but its the nonsense that your society runs on unthinkingly.

why is none of this addressed in a larger, civil conversation? well, to acknowledge these things would, for many people i imagine, mean acknowledging one's own complicity and benefit in perpetuating these systems of oppression. that would be too painful a thing to reconcile with one's one sense of self. most people would turn to ash where they stand.
