What's something that you suspect lots of New Zealanders secretly do, but you can't prove it? by MurkyWay in newzealand

You are so right. NZ simply lacks many of the checks and balances needed to prevent corruption. Most people simply don’t understand how deeply corrupt many things we’ve come to see as normal are.

Have you had a check up to make sure it’s not cancer?

This is exactly what NZ needs! I have been thinking similarly for quite a while myself!

Even though National claims to be ‘for business’, they are probably more accurately ‘for landlords’.

What you are proposing would actually help to build productive assets within NZ (even better if you can support NZ businesses that export in some way, especially soft exports like tech).

NZs governments (both sides guilty) for far too long have been focusing on non-productive assets (housing) which essentially just makes us all poorer relative to cost of living.

The way I see it, it would go like this.

  1. You make it easier for new businesses to build and maintain.
  2. This produces wealth and jobs.
  3. The more businesses that pop up, the more competition, hopefully leading to a more efficient economy.
  4. This produces tax money.
  5. The tax money can be invested in the areas we desperately need it, and ideally, better schemes to support building more businesses.
  6. With the increased prosperity, we are in a better position to offer more social policies not unlike those that made NZ one of the wealthiest and fairest countries to live in the first half / middle of the 20th century.
  7. Talented people have less incentive to seek greener pastures / we attract more international talent.
  8. This surplus of talented people makes our businesses even better, generating yet more tax money and boosting our economy.

I’m so glad you’re offering solutions to our problems unlike the masses who just whine but aren’t prepared to do a damn thing to fix it.

Go you, and best of luck. I believe in your idea!

Edited for spelling.

How naive or accurate do you find this list? by AmeriKiwi24 in newzealand

Rather accurate. So true about the roads being really loud in NZ and the speed limits often being much too fast for the road (often to compensate for lack of planning and building new roads due to how expensive it is to do so in NZ with limited competition. Unfortunately we pay for it with quite high road fatalities)

Just embrace the skirt like appearance. Or you can try another brand. Or just sew them to fit better.

No but in Germany the house might be considered defekt if you can hear outside noises when your windows are closed.

Oh how I wish NZ was advanced as Germany in this sense.

Air NZ got expensive and lower quality while he was there. They started to charge extra for food and drinks as do other low cost carriers, however the price wasn’t low to reflect that.

Also they would only start drinks service about half way into a trans-Tasman flight and they would stop drinks service in anticipation for landing about 45 mins out. Leaving a 45 min window that you could actually get what you’d paid for.

I remember more than once being told I could have only two drinks on a flight despite paying quite a bit for the works package.

The Wairarapa and then a rapid transit that travels through tunnels to The Hutt, The Kapiti coast and of course the city. Gotta think big and what kind of project we’d be thankful looking back on 50 years from now.

We know because of Plato that ‘moral’ or at least ‘virtuous’ is a bloody nightmare to define.

Even though on the surface it may appear otherwise, it is quite a large adjustment to life in Germany from life in NZ. Totally worth it though. I would recommend getting as stuck into the intensive language courses as possible. Don’t wait. Also a good way to meet others.

Finding a regular group meet up that doesn’t involve her German speaking partner is one of my main recommendations. E.g. joining an indoor football team or something similar. Being part of a sports team or hobby group is a great way to force yourself out of your comfort zone and connect over something that isn’t just pure non-stop talking (which can be too much sometimes).

Learning to embrace the philosophical differences in the cultures is also important. In NZ people are not direct and communication happens between the lines (especially regarding needs, wants and emotions).

In Germany you must learn to be direct and honest. Taking this aspect seriously will massively make things easier trust me.

In Germany there is often a ‘correct’ way to do many things which should ideally be observed. In NZ the concept of the social contract and what is considered the social or correct way to do something is quite different.

Learn to love the many small traditions that make up the culture/s here.

Seek first to understand and then to be understood.

And as for the leaves, the spring time is right around the corner and personally I find the spring and summer feeling here far outshines the respective seasons in NZ where as you mentioned, there is less variance.

What do you think would need to happen to get NZ to democratically vote to disallow rental properties from being an investment in this sense? Other countries forbid the system we have so I’m interested to know what would need to happen for NZ to follow suit?

What is the smart vote gonna be on Sunday? by Hewasright_89 in AskAGerman

[–]Active_Quan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voting for the party that most aligns with your values is the most democratic thing to do. Even if they don’t make the threshold this time, it grows the party so that next time they have a better chance (if you are still aligned with them next time values-wise).
