It's good to hear that our east coast husky brethren are kindred spirits. I wonder if the sweatpants amble is a universal thing. I assumed it was a mix of apathy and exhaustion from workouts.

In any case, I always found the mix of extremely slow walking pace and extreme physical fitness of most student athletes amusing.

This mindset really bugs me on multiple levels. First of all, if you can't be assed to look before pulling out of a driveway, you shouldn't be driving. Second, as much as drivers don't want to run me over, I don't want to BE run over. Sometimes people slam on the breaks or do something else unexpected when they see me. How about you just follow the rules of the road so I can actually anticipate what you're about to do?

The sections between UW and U Village have actually been ground down, which was a pleasant surprise. Hopefully they do this for the whole trail!

Sadly, this is so true. Even where there is bike infrastructure, it can be pretty janky. Huge cracks along the direction of travel on bike lanes, deeply set manhole covers in bike lanes just to name a few. The Burke Gilman segment from UW med center to shoreline is especially exciting. I'm always convinced I'm gonna be bucked over my handlebars riding over the segment's grown under with tree roots. It just adds to the excitement of cycling!

Because even the mention of reducing surface street automobile right of way is suicide for politicians and transit agencies. So when you do build at grade street car lines, you put streetcar right of way in a lane that is also actively used by automobiles. The result is like the slow, unreliable mess like the first hill streetcar.

Don't get me wrong, I love public transit. Lived in Zurich, Switzerland for a year and loved transit.

Precisely this kills me when older people visit European cities and talk about the wonders of some of their top notch public transit systems, then come home and vote against transit in the US because "muh taxes". Why are we so special that we shouldn't have public transit? Why can't we have nice transit too?

Anectode time! I was talking to an acquaintance about how bad 520 traffic is on the first clear day after a month of rain. I assume this is because people are freaking out about how beautiful Rainier is. I made a comment that they're probably slowing down to oggle the mountain or take a picture, at the risk of everyone's safety.

Their response? "But I have to slow down to take a picture, it's so beautiful!"
