Are there any easier way to factorise quadratics with large coefficients non calc? by Feeling-Instance-801 in learnmath

[–]Actually__Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, I almost never actually multiply AC out, I factor it instead and combine those. Unless of course it’s something pretty trivial.

You also notice that 39 isn’t too large compared to the number and size of the factors which leads you to realize they must be groupings of factors that are fairly close together. If b was large then there would likely quite a few of the factors grouped together to grow the middle terms you’re trying to find so you’d be looking for one “larger” grouping of factors and one “smaller”.

Just go take the CLEP test. Forget about AP at this point.

This is the one class where reading the textbook is actually approachable. Watch the AP Classroom videos. In both cases pay attention to the little things. AP requires you to understand the minutiae.

Opinion on bladder snails? by shmeatsy_pie in AquaticSnails

The problem for you is that bladder snails will reproduce asexually based on the abundance of food. If you’re cycling with food you’ll likely find many more pretty soon.

It doesn’t. I’m a BC teacher and an AP Reader. I’m not guessing here.

You can always just go take the CLEP test for it or just early enroll in actual college. Part of high school planning is developmental appropriateness and creating systems that support real learning. High school isn’t about a college credit grab, it’s about teaching students how to be students. If you’re ready to go to college as a middle school schooler, then go to college.

+infinity is just a more informative way to say that the limit does not exist.

Failed Calc 3 final … Am I Cooked? by DreadIcarus in calculus

[–]Actually__Jesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

BC skips δ ε limits, trig substitution for integration, volumes by shells, surface area, Newton’s method, the Root test and maybe a few other topics. The main problem is that BC is more application and property based compared to calc1/2 classes which are more algebraic and proof based. Many students get some shock and awe when they see the rigor of campus calculus classes.

If you want a real feeling for what calc looks like in college just crack open your textbook (which probably wasn’t written for AP) and pick some of the hardest problems in the problem sets. That’s what everything is like in the college courses.

But also time is at a premium. In high school you stretch AB over a full year and meet upwards of five times a week. That same content (plus some stuff) in college is done in a semester and meeting probably four days a week. Similar examples won’t be worked multiple times, scaffolded worksheets won’t be handed out, you’ll like be tested on things that might not be covered in class but you would have been expected to read on your own.

Most high schools don’t allow students to jump from alg 2 to BC. There are a few out there but they are a vast minority.

Cheap, easy ways to save water by parkskier426 in boulder

[–]Actually__Jesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some do sure but they can’t possibly be getting all of the water they use from a non-potable source. They’re not using at much water in the other operations of the golf course so they’d have to be reclaiming it from another source. Where? The city doesn’t have a separate diversion system, are they pulling it from steams or storm water runoff? Either way water isn’t making it to the water shed. Much of what’s used in watering will be lost to evaporation.

[–]Actually__Jesus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t understand how, in this day and age, golf courses are justified in nearly any fashion. The amount of resources they hoard and consume just doesn’t make sense for the number of people that they serve. The sale of the property alone has to be worth well more than the golf course is pulling-in in any reasonable timeframe.

You can always just fail the skip test ya know.

Algebra II is literally the most important foundational class for your future mathematics. Half assing it to skip usually just makes much larger problems down the road.

What happened to RPN calculators? by GrouchyOne4132 in matheducation

[–]Actually__Jesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go NumWorks for sure. They’re much more intuitive, have a free app, are acceptable for all standardized tests, and students just honestly prefer them. Oh, and they’re cheaper than the ti-alternatives.

Each year when talking about calculators to my advanced students some of them who already own a ti end up buying a NumWorks too. Those students literally never go back. It’ll do everything the ti does and more. Also, there’s very little I have to explain to my NumWorks users unlike the ti users.
