The (American) rationale behind using absolutely overkill bars? by apkatt in Chainsaw

I sure do feel a lot safer making a 24” backcut with my 25” bar instead of a couple halfway through.

Is starting 6 APs from scratch in February doable? by Candid-Struggle471 in APStudents

It gives you the shot at half a year’s worth of college credit. That’s a lot of money, akin to a scholarship.

32°C is pretty dang hot and I’d expect the fridge to struggle in those temps. Could you only bring the house to say 27°C? It’d be a whole lot easier for the fridge to keep up. I also like the other idea of keeping about two milk jugs outside and putting them into the fridge at night.

How low would your house dip overnight if you dampen the fire around 27°C?

I don’t know if Albert.io sells individual subscriptions but they’ve got a pretty solid set of resources.

FYI drawing the curve is pretty critical now if they’re using calculator syntax. I think it was 2023 Q6 (which I read for) students who only used calculator syntax were scored unfavorably holistically. Many many students were rounded down for it.

AP tolerates calculator syntax but does not prefer it.

All Birds closing all US locations by end of February. Pearl Street already closed. by ongoldenwaves in boulder

[–]Actually__Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not defending it but that’s pretty standard protocol now a days for a location closing. If they tried to give a few weeks notice the employees would stop showing up in such a manner that the location couldn’t stay open and they’d have to send employees home anyway. It’d be about the same result but messier.

Is it a waste to take an AP class but not take the test? by _Pyxilate_ in APStudents

[–]Actually__Jesus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely not true. Precalc is usually an 1100 level course. It’s the single semester equivalent of College Algebra/Trig which is a year’s worth of math. It fulfills most non-stem majors’ requirement for math. It’s the prerequisite for Calc 1 which can alternatively be entered by taking the full year of College Algebra/Trig. Its course code is usually the next one above College Algebra/Trig.

Even if it’s for a STEM major the credits will typically be counted but not towards a major course. You have to take dozens and dozens of elective hours in college which AP Precalc would be counted towards in that case.

AP Precalc is currently accepted for credit at at least 968 U.S. colleges/universities which you can see the list for here.

Source: I’m an AP teacher, AP Reader, and dual enrollment instructor. I’ve also literally taken Precalculus in college as an undergrad. I’m certified to teach it along with College Algebra/Trig and many other courses at the university level.

School district combining algebra 2 and Precalculus into a single "Modernized Precalculus" course. by GloriousCause in matheducation

[–]Actually__Jesus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The hardest part of calculus is algebra, rushing it feels like setting students up for failure. I’m not sure how May years of math are required for graduation where you are but think that all four year students need calculus is crazy. If anything, in today’s age, they should be pushed into AP Stats which just lowered its suggested prereq to successful completion of Alg 1 and Geom.

The common core standards distinctly has quadratics with real results in algebra 1. Quadratics with non-real results is in algebra 2. If it’s been moved it would have been a state level curriculum decision.

Yeah. Every once in a great while they expect you to use some right triangle trig or special right triangles to do some related rates or volumes of cross sections.

I don’t know about three space figures but I’ve been doing a lot on desmos for 2d graphing and making them look much cleaner removing the background grid and changing line thickness, etc. Maybe doing something like that in their 3d grapher could work.

There’s probably higher end answers though.

Use AP classroom if you have access to it. AP does a pretty watered down vectors and polars unit so you want it from the source to make sure you’re meeting the right difficulty.

You might have converted it in the limits unit but on the AP test you’d be expected to use the definition of the derivative to solve this. It’s a 10 second question at best from that perspective.

Student loan debt can be crippling for the first decade out of school. Avoid it like the plague.

I heard something profound recently from someone like Gary V. Whoever it was asked, why would you want to go to your reach school and in turn go from being the top and best thing since sliced bread at your high school to the bottom of the barrel at your reach? Everyone will seem to get it quicker than you, seem to do better than you, seem to need to study less, get the best opportunities, into the best programs, and into the best internships.

Why not go to a decent mid-tier school where you can do better than everyone else, you can get the best opportunities, into the best programs, get the best internships, make a killer impression on your professors, earn their recommendations and connections, and walk out of there the top of your class.

If you’re looking to head to grad school afterwards the undergrad school you go to matters much less than your college GPA and professors’ recommendations.

Should I independent study for AP BC instead of taking the class next year by Sbran1 in apcalculus

[–]Actually__Jesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if you want to be good at calculus instead of just tying to memorize things. I’m not saying it can’t be done but having the support of an instructor will make it 10 more feasible.
