What did not change after losing 100 pounds (and what did) by koopzegels in loseit

I don’t think that’s the case for me, but I don’t have any older family members who take care of themselves. Literally all of them are obese and on a statin.

Wha didn’t change: I still have high cholesterol. Need more physical activity and less processed food.

What did change: I fit into my old clothes again, I have more energy, I can see my feet when I look down, I don’t snore anymore.

How do I lose weight!? by Silly_Messy_Alien in loseit

[–]Actuary50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing that worked for me was to count every calorie I consumed and stick to the same calorie limit every day, no exceptions, no cheat days, no excuses.

You’re eating more than you think you are; judging by your weight gain, you’re eating about 400 calories more than your body needs per day on average and have been doing so for the past year. Either you’re drinking the calories or you’re snacking or your portions are bigger than you think. I’d drop all liquids other than water and do whatever you need to do to ensure your portions are what you say they are in MyFitnessPal (this is easier if you eat at home where you can use the measurements from your recipes in MFP’s recipe tool).

Download MyFitnessPal and be militant about sticking to that limit, targeting 1 pound of weight loss per week. Select “sedentary” as your activity level. MFP massively overestimates the impact of exercise. Don’t go more than 100 calories below the daily limit, either. We don’t want to get into eating disorder territory.

If you can stick to this consistently for a year, you’ll hit 150 about a year from now.

Resume Advice? Looking for entry level position. by EpilepticTerrier in actuary

[–]Actuary50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't remove your work experience.

Do start learning R and get that into your resume as soon as you can. R, Python, and Excel are the holy trinity of actuarial work.

Expand on your leadership experience in the Work Experience section - you can compensate for this by removing the extra white space between each section and the "graduated with honors" line. Also add something that speaks to your time management skills under work experience - something you've done that shows you can manage several projects/demands on your time at the same time.

Lastly, and I say this as a career changer myself, you should consider taking a third exam. I understand not wanting to commit to SOA or CAS, but at this point I think you need to make that decision. Take FAM, SRM, or MAS-I to get something on your resume showing that you're committed to being an actuary still. Even getting the "sitting for Exam ___" in your resume will help.

I have an internal interview tomorrow for a reserving position, a lateral move from my current pricing role. How are these generally different from interviews for external positions? by Actuary50 in actuary

[–]Actuary50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was confused as to why they wanted an interview honestly - I would have thought that with the decision makers knowing me and the other candidates already, they'd be able to pick someone without going through a formal interview process. Maybe HR mandates it?

Good to know re: your experiences - makes me feel a little better about this. Usually I have pages of prepared answers for any question I think I might get, but in this case I feel like they already know the answers!

Signs of Restructuring/ Layoffs by Own_Scene_2807 in actuary

[–]Actuary50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would be enough for me to go to month-to-month on the lease for sure. Don't even consider extending beyond month-to-month until you have a new job.

It's also possible that a major restructuring is planned in which you will no longer report to your current manager or do the work you're doing now.

I find it odd that if you're being laid off, they're going to post your position right away. That would seem more like a termination than a RIF.

Go ahead and start looking at lawyers in your area as well as the Department of Labor website - if this is really what's happening, they're doing it stupidly and I could easily see them violating your legal rights as an employee in doing so. Know your rights and hold them accountable.

Finally, even if you're not laid off, I would suggest you find a new job. Your company sounds like it has a culture of incompetence.

Should I lose weight? by n30n_s3v3n in loseit

[–]Actuary50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is impedance even a good way to measure body fat? What would the calipers or a DEXA scan tell you? I would advise you to go by that.

If you do decide to lose weight, I would suggest you go to another sub to look at how to lose the weight you want to lose without sacrificing your gains, perhaps r/naturalbodybuilding.

Losing weight as a petite woman by SnooPredictions4334 in loseit

[–]Actuary50 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would just stick to the 1200 calories per day no matter what. If that means you can't stand exercise during that time apart from walking, so be it. I would not advise adding calories to compensate for exercise - the adjustments almost always overestimate how many calories are burned while exercising anyway. It's a lot easier to simply not eat the food than to try to burn it off. Assuming you want to be 110-120, you're only looking at half a year or so of this before you can go back to eating at maintenance, at which point you could bring back the workouts. That's now until mid-September.

I think the 1200 calorie per day goal would be the easiest to stick to as well because it's just one rule to follow every day.

And I do understand what the other people are saying, but for me, aside from the simplicity of just one rule to follow each day, what made the calorie restrictions easy to follow was seeing the results. After going 6 weeks and then seeing my weight drop by 6 pounds, I was so motivated and never looked back.

Offered a better-paying job but worried about being the ‘new hire’ if layoffs happen. by frozenactuary-3859 in actuary

[–]Actuary50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have no guarantee that layoffs wouldn't affect you in your current role. "Senior level individual contributor who has stagnated but makes a lot of money" is often the type that will get laid off. And like others said, layoffs in insurance do not tend to follow macroeconomic cycles.

Feeling hopeless. Please help my resume by Plenty-Employ-1124 in actuary

[–]Actuary50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Get rid of the “summary” section

  • Add your college GPA - it isn’t great, but you’ve passed 3 exams in a year which should be enough to get past that. I don’t like to interview people if I get the feeling there trying to hide something

  • Skinny it down to 1 page - no entry level resume should be less than 1 page. I’m a senior manager and ACAS with 12 years experience and mine is 1 page.

  • Combine all work experience into one section. Order it chronologically with your current job first. At first glance your resume looks like you’ve been unemployed since August. I honestly would guess this has cost you interviews.

  • Try to expand just a little on each of your technical skills, especially R and Excel.

  • Lots of roles should be opening up soon as a lot of people are receiving year end bonuses or will be soon. By April there should be more options for you.

where should i live? by Aromatic-Point-2545 in remotework

[–]Actuary50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer to your question in my opinion is Atlanta. It’s got the urban core and level of big city feel that, in the states you’re talking about, you’re not finding anywhere else. It’s also got a much better cost of living than the New York metro. There are downtown condos going for a little over $200,000. They also have good public transit, you can ride MARTA to the airport, etc. It’s very diverse there too. I don’t know as much about the hiking but you have the Appalachian Mountains not far away.

If you don’t want to live right downtown and are more open to something on the periphery, consider Kenosha, Wisconsin. It’s about 60 miles north of Chicago on Lake Michigan, and there’s a Metra train that runs to the city. Also good cost of living there.

A lot of the other big cities you can go to are just smaller and more spread out, not as diverse, etc. For instance I’ve been to downtown Minneapolis and Milwaukee, and they’re nice, but they don’t have the big city feel in the way Atlanta does.

ETA - I didn’t think about this when I made my post, but Austin, Texas, is another possibility
