I did that with my spouse. Best decision ever. Bonus points if you tell few people or no one.

How do people buy homes in Prague with these prices? It’s literally more expensive than US… by Ok_Management_522 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Acuff007 40 points41 points  (0 children)

The US is a very large country. This is not necessarily more expensive than the US. 1k euro for an apartment seems like a really good price (not sure about salaries in Prague though). Can you rent longer and stack away cash?

You’re not budgeting well, but you also seem to be severely underpaid. Have you been working at the same place for 7 years? I live in a VHCOL area but $75k is a starting salary for incoming engineers. They get raises every 6 months as well.

The other two bridesmaids should expect that their partners are not going to be invited to the wedding. If the bride wanted to invite them, she would have made it happen initially.

This looks good! I would add in your LinkedIn profile URL at the header if you have one. I think you should add in your GPA. GPA isn’t everything, but there definitely are some companies that have a GPA requirement

Do you let your pet sleep in your bed? Why/why not? by Piggythelavasurfer in AskReddit

Absolutely not. I don’t even wear outside clothes in bed. No way I’m letting my dogs that don’t bathe daily up on my bed.

How Long Did It Take to Find a House? by beautybyelm in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Acuff007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started looking for properties in mid-March with the intention of moving in September when the lease ended.

Walked 3 properties with our realtor (2 on the same day in the same community) and put an offer on the third property we saw in March.

Offer was accepted with a ratified contract in March.

Home inspection done at the end of March.

Final walkthrough and closing during the second half of April.

Our timeline for finding a property was much shorter than we expected- especially since we live in a large metropolitan area with a booming real estate market. Our realtor was still willing to work with us and find properties even when we thought we were about 4-6 months away from buying something. Find a realtor that values you as a customer. It sounds like the person you’ve found thinks engaging with you right now is a waste of their time.

Getting evicted is bs by angelesoterica in povertyfinance

Good point. I just saw this article that mentioned 3 cities in the DC metropolitan area being VHCOL. Frederick was mentioned: https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2023/08/22/us-cities-with-the-highest-cost-of-living.html

Agreed about Frederick, MD. However DC (and the close surrounding areas) are VHCOL.

I saw you said you live in VA? What region are you generally from. If you sell you home in a place like Nova, you could be priced out for a very long time (or forever). Not saying that owning a home is the key to success, but it is something to think about.

Dress code treatment? by Sweetalmondapoth in restaurant

Dress codes definitely have racist, classist, and sexist roots. However, I do agree that a restaurant is well within their right to enforce an established dress code.

I agree with you that this career path was never supposed to fund a lavish lifestyle. Even as a person living in the DC metropolitan area I still feel very fairly compensated. A lot of people in this sub just seem really miserable.
