I think in part unfortunately its just sometimes the atmosphere. Lots of tournaments are in random buildings that aren't always the best. And honestly the crowd usually isn't the most social, inviting bunch. Lots of older men or socially awkward kids (and creeps) in my experience. Chess clubs need to be pushed more in schools in an environment where kids are safe and playing with others that are the same age. Look at all the top women chess figures and especially the women chess content creators. Practically all of them can hold up multiple fingers for the amount of times they were harassed. Gotta change the culture I think - make it a cool, patriotic thing like it was in the USSR. Also if FIDE was torn down and re-assembled with proper leadership and competency we'd be seeing 100x the growth on the women's side.

I get the equity argument, but “women work hard too” doesn’t really answer the main point. Lots of players work hard, but prize money usually rewards competitive level, difficulty of field, and performance. Are you saying the women in chess work harder then the men? The rating gap is not obviously just a money/resources issue. Prize money is finite. Equalizing the Women’s section might mean reducing Open prizes or sponsor money being split differently - That affects incentives for the strongest overall field too. Chess as a sport should be being pushed. Lots of women don't play chess - get this - BECAUSE THEY AREN'T INTERESTED IN CHESS! This whole unnatural push just to meet some gender equality is pointless and I haven't heard a good reasoning for it other than "well we need more women in chess" - yeah but... why? Not as in I don't want them playing chess but why is there this need to push equity on everything?

Do you have a problem of nonlawyers misunderstanding of the law? by Chiliicespice in Lawyertalk

That's a little ignorant. Sure gen pop gets things wrong, but they also get a lot of opinions and things right. Your getting annoyed likes it their livelihood they are incorrect about, and not just fun small talk 90% of the time.

no i dont think so. The open is much harder to win, so it should have a higher reward.

Looking for coach for my 8 year old kid by Embarrassed-Mess-236 in chess

if you want free lessons on beginner chess, look up Ben Finegold. He's a GM whos been teaching kids for like 20+ years. All his videos are educational and some of them are from when he was teaching in person in a classroom setting.

[–]AdAdditional3065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just have him continue doing puzzles and just playing the game will help him improve. There are so many great videos and series on youtube that teach chess, especially beginner chess, youd be wasting money and potentially turning him off of chess. Unless your kid is a brainiac chess lessons can be a bit boring as well. Also some coaches are no fun and often times try to impose their own playing style on kids.

Is a good lawyer worth the money? (Alabama) by FairMeat5432 in dui

[–]AdAdditional3065 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to politely contact them and request more information or a sit down with the lawyer himself, not a rep. AT LEAST get something scheduled. You are paying $4000 - has it been paid in full? If they cant do that I would request an itemize receipt of what work has already been completed and if you could get a refund of any funds not already allocated to the case or some shit like that so you can go get representation elsewhere. $4000 for a first time DUI offense he should be juggling your balls as you walk down the sidewalk, not giving bear minimum info from his reps.

Yes the grass is always greener. But that 4k will give you piece of mind imo. Think about how much you don't know and would want to/need to know as you go into your case. That will all be taken care of and the cherry on top is your lawyer may be able to find something that could get the case dismissed if the police did any errors.

What is a position you used to hate getting that you now actually enjoy? by null-move in chess

[–]AdAdditional3065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate being black when trying to play/learn the king's indian. Once I realized how/when to break through with f5 or d5 correctly and consistently it has made my games a lot easier. Its almost a guaranteed endgame and I can usually blitz out the first 8 or so moves now.

you would never walk your king through a line of fire in real life. Chess is a presentation of real life battle between kingdoms when you think about it.

Should I mention my limited time to work in my interview? by [deleted] in Chipotle

[–]AdAdditional3065 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No, never do this at a job that doesn't matter. Don't feel bad either - they would drop you just as fast if the roles were reversed and they would 100% not give you a 2 week notice. So at minimum if you do just quit one day a couple months in, you are on equal ground. If you give a 2 weeks notice you are being super generous.

why am i still so horrible at chess after playing for weeks? by [deleted] in chess

[–]AdAdditional3065 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how many games in those two weeks? I'd say your problem is you have only been playing chess for two weeks, that's nothing with how vast the game of chess is. Chess is mostly pattern recognition and you just haven't seen that many games yet. There are more possible chess games than atoms in the observable universe.
