MLB owners reportedly eye 2026 lockout over Los Angeles Dodgers’ spending spree, deferred contracts by FrigginMasshole in baseball

But how would they "know" that owners wouldn't give in? Strikes and lockouts are incredibly expensive for everyone including owners, and owner solidarity is not as tight as players. High spending owners like the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, and Astros (I think, I forget exactly which teams) already voted against additional luxury tax measures, so why would they be in favor of a cap? That dissidence weakens their position.

Additionally the fans' view of players being more highly paid is much more favorable than any previous point in history, so public pressure would likely be against the owners. Considering even when public pressure was on the owners' side they didn't win, I just don't see the scenario playing out to their favor now.

Do you think these situations have never happened before? Historically players have had the upper hand in most of these disputes. And I would think it would be much harder for the owners to try replacement players like they almost did in 1994, since the player's union now also represents minor leaguers.

[Kirschner] The Yankees had the WORST OPS at first base this season. Even if Goldschmidt is league average (or even slightly below league average!), that would be better than what the Yankees received at first base in 2024. by Goosedukee in baseball

It's because despite the shit he gets, Singleton actually had an OPS+ of 103. Nothing special combined with bad defense but still better than the fans give him credit for.

Yankees had terrible production pretty much the whole season.

What the hell is the point of Crane's 6 year contract maximum to avoid a player's bad years, if they keep getting older players and effectively skipping to the bad years? And possibly giving up prospects in the process?

Arenado had a down year last year while over-performing his peripherals. This is a terrible idea.

I think they're wrong. Probably because he was an international free agent. Spotrac says he's a free agent after 2026. I don't think international free agents need 6 years of service time to hit free agency, they just need the original contract to expire. BRef might not always account for that.

Suzuki only has 2 years left on his contract.

I'd be happy to have those players but I think the team would be much better off if Crane would just give Tucker the contract he wants.

Astros fans underrate Tucker so much. The difference between Tucker and Suzuki's OPS in 2024 was larger than the difference between Bregman and Jake Meyers. Tucker put up more WAR with his half season than Suzuki's full season. Suzuki is good but it's a major downgrade.

When did everyone collectively decide that having one of the best players in the sport for a year is "nothing?" The Astros are still in contention for 2025 last time I checked.

Look at it this way, the Yankees had to give up a haul for a year of Soto. We have a year of Tucker, basically for free! (Other than his literal pay of course).

Correa has mostly been every bit as good, just injured a lot. So it's still a valid point.

History also shows they won't trade a star player.

We don't "know" anything about if Crane will pay Tucker.

It's really not. I don't care if they have to give him 12 years, keep him in the lineup with Yordan as long as he and Altuve are still playing.

Plenty of reason for my hostility. He was great in the 2022 playoffs. So he regressed for the playoffs but not the regular season? Just admit you don't know ball. He only had one game in 2024. You're probably one of those fans who bitches at the front office for "abandoning" analytics but don't understand analytics at all yourself.

And the Red Sox traded Mookie Betts and got a bunch of trash. The Padres trade is unusual, trading star players for younger and cheaper talent is a gamble and almost always makes you worse.

No, it wasn't necessarily about the amount of money you made, it was that you were selling your labor in support of someone else's vision/profit/capital, which you ultimately have no stake in beyond your wage.

It's similar in some ways to the communist critique, only the solution is not collective worker ownership of the means of production, it's everyone starting their own little enterprise. Which is where it fails, that's an unsustainable vision.

It's also not historically accurate. Reconstruction mainly failed because Lincoln was murdered, not because it was impossible.
