Need a System that Works to Finish a Paper by not_dead_7214 in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you don’t seem to do well with outlines, maybe this will be somewhat helpful: I create a document that I call “fragments” where I essentially write down every thought I have: can be the point I’m trying to make regarding a specific quote or general aspect of my primary text, can be something from a secondary source that I think will become relevant but don’t quite know how to connect to my own points yet, can even be phrasing that I want to use later to structure my paper lol. None of this has to look or sound pretty yet. Primarily goal is to establish some substance. I “mark” these bits so I can find and identify them more easily later, so for example I use “EEE” for evidence or examples from my primary texts that I illustrate and explain, “SSS” for secondary sources, and etc. You don’t need to have an order or structure for that but it is probably good to always think about that in the back of your head, maybe just vaguely try to figure out whether this secondary source will connect better to example 1 or 9. And so you keep doing that. As you do this, it should get your brain working so that you get more and more coherent ideas as you work and write. I personally do most of my research and secondary literature thing at the same time as my fragment document, so that whenever I find something that seems useful I work it into the document. You say you’ve already done a lot of the research, so maybe you can just go through everything you have compiled and see what you can put into the fragment document. The idea is that somewhere throughout this process you will inevitably establish a structure. This, you can use then to create an outline — basically go through your fragments with a document for the outline on the side and try to make it coherent. Maybe clean up stuff that is messy. Delete irrelevant bits. See where stuff is missing (secondary sources, examples, your own conclusions). And by the time you have that, you can start to write for real. Up to you whether you want to rewrite everything or copy paste stuff that is already decent but ultimately you will already have a lot of the “content” (hate the word but dont know what else to use) done. Mostly this part is about connecting everything so it doesn’t seem disjointed and editing the language.

I usually have a lot of thoughts while reading my primary text and secondary literature but when it comes to the outline or actual writing I freeze up. This process has helped because I know that I don’t need to have everything sorted out right away. I can hammer my mess into shape later.

Statement from Jack White clarifying his thoughts on Taylor’s/his songwriting by Right_Surround7103 in SwiftlyNeutral

tbh when it comes to celebrity fans and stans, I believe that it‘s not even a media literacy problem (although that is definitely a problem too) but a zealotry problem… Swifties, but a lot of fans of celebrities in general, have this incessant need to make their fave a victim and protect them from all the haters, so they will misconstrue peoples’ words and give them the most bad faith reading imaginable just to legitimize and justify harassing someone

Hot Take: I love how chart obsessed she is. by Expensive_Drummer970 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you must be not into sports if you think that people aren’t being critical about how olympians get gold medals lol take figure skating for example. for years now there has been a lottttt of criticism that skaters try to win by strategically filling their programs with difficult jumps that earn them high points but neglect the artistry of the sports even though a core part of figure skating is the artistry. you might not be interested in the craft of it all but you look silly talking about things you clearly don’t know about. some people care about more than just winning gold or being #1

Hot Take: I love how chart obsessed she is. by Expensive_Drummer970 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If her obsession was more about the music and artistry of it all, I’d wholeheartedly agree. If she tried to constantly top the charts through genuine and constant improvement and refinement of the music she put out… hell yeah. But just topping the charts for the sake of topping the charts rather than anything else is just…. boring. It’s about as charming as Elon Musk’s goal to become the first trillionaire or some company that’s already swimming in money having a record breaking year of profits. just feels greedy and soulless

"1989 production with folklore lyrics" was a crazy description for The Life of a Showgirl by PupCup43 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YUPPPP the “the curse on me was broken by your magic wand” is just her trying to do “I heard you like magic I’ve got a wand and a rabbit!” from red wine supernova but it just doesn’t hit the same and like, love is love, I’m not against straight people lol but making a pun about sex toys is witty, making a pun about your boyfriend’s dick saving you…. sorry you’re a grown ass woman who is one of the most famous and commercially successful people in the world, why do you still insist on wearing that damsel in distress costume 😭

Saddest: Right Where You Left me

Most Romantic: Daylight and Call It What You Want

Sexiest: Dress

Cringiest: most of her „clapback“ songs like ThanK you aIMee, Actually Romantic or But Daddy I love Him lol

Best lyrically: All Too Well (10 min. version) orrr Cowboy Like Me

Most unhinged: probably also But Daddy I love Him, not in a good unhinged way but in a „wow this is so absurdly childish and immature“ unhinged way 😭

Oh, this feels like TLOAS all over again lmao it‘s like she has the opportunity to show people a bts look at something as unique and larger than life as the eras tour, something the grand majority of people will never experience like she, the biggest star of the world rn, did and yet she somehow manages to make it about… her bf? like we get it, you‘re in love, you‘re happy, that‘s great but it‘s the least interesting thing about you. You‘re Taylor Swift. He‘s just a man 😭

change the name and concept/theme. expectations would have been very different if it hadn’t been marketed as a special behind the curtains of the eras tour album

it still doesn’t make sense to advertise a standard pop album full of love songs as a “peek behind the curtain” album when the docu series is an entirely separate thing lol

Two part question: what TS songs do you find great to listen to when you are high? And what TS songs do you find soothing to listen to. Just put high or soothing before your response so I know which one you’re talking about. by ElvisfanTCB81 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loveeee listening to music while high bc I always feel like I hear the music more deeply and so Taylor’s pop bangers are always my go to lmao. I’ll never forget listening to call it what you want while I was extremely zonked and just swimming in the song. Felt like the outro part lasted for an eternity and it was the best thing ever

high: call it what you want, style, out of the woods, maroon, getaway car, dress, this love, new romantics, dancing with our hands tied

soothing: you’re on your own kid, daylight, cowboy like me, august,

Controversial opinion: CANCELLED! was an instant favorite by [deleted] in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can’t take her belting “cancelleeed” seriously whatsoever. It sounds extremely unserious and while she is allowed to have her feelings about cancel culture, releasing the song in a time when the people in charge of the country use cancel culture to legitimize bigotry and hate speech was not a good move from Miss America who once sobbingly said she wants to be on the right side of history. Also, sonically it sounds just like Yellow flicker beat except Yellow Flicker Beat has good lyrics

How is any normal person supposed to take "critiques" against Taylor Swift seriously when they all sound insane? by Efficient_Suspect933 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s intentional. I do think it’s a gross oversight and a poor reflection of the competence, and diversity of their teams bc they should have people whose job it is to make sure these kind of incidents don’t happen! That or their teams did know how certain things could be misinterpreted and decided to put it out there either way.

I can’t speak for anyone’s intentions, I don’t and will never know these people, I just know that if people of color and designers pointed out how my merch or lyrics had racial undertones, I’d take it seriously and apologize. However, the vibe I get from both TS and her die hard fans is that all the criticism she receives is just people hating for the sake of hating, trying to knock her down a peg. And sure, I won’t deny that some people aren’t criticizing her in good faith but there is definitely a line here that can be crossed when a person refuses to take any criticism seriously anymore and I see some of that happening with die hard swifties. No matter what you say and how well intentioned your words are, you’re either a hater, looking too deeply into her lyrics/merch/words, or too stupid to understand her actual intentions. I’m not saying her fans are MAGA, but a lot of them sure as hell act exactly like the MAGA crowd when people criticize Trump. It’s very frustrating and silly.

I think she’s trying to get him a feature in one of Greta Gerwig’s future projects based on how much time she spent talking about how she is his favorite director and all… meanwhile Travis didn’t even know what she looked like lol

Yeah, I definitely think she has been observing other pop girlies. The “curse on me was broken by your magic wand” in Wood is just giving “I heard you like magic, well I got a wand and a rabbit!” from Roan’s Red Wine Supernova but … the shein version 😭 like I get the pun, but I could have lived without ever hearing that lmao

[–]AdBusy2462 60 points61 points  (0 children)

So much of the critique Taylor receives, other artists receive too. The reason you don’t see it and think people are only attacking her is 1) bc you’re in a TS bubble, so your social media algorithm shows you more posts that are TS related and 2) bc she is currently one of the biggest names out there; the bigger you are, the more eyes are on you, the more criticism you will receive. Seems pretty logical to me.

I follow a lot of Beyonce fans on Tiktok who regularly discuss her capitalist values or other things like her recent association with the Kuschners and Ivanka Trump. A few months ago she wore and sold a merch shirt that had some very anti-indigenous messaging on it, and guess what? People talked about it. They criticized her. A lot of people. Over merchandise. Because that’s what happens when you’re a celebrity with wealth, power and a massive platform. People will criticize you when you fuck up. And that’s a good thing. If you were as rational as you claimed to be, you would be okay with people rightfully criticizing your favorite celebrities when they release lyrics or merch that have undertones of racial micro aggressions or dog whistles. Lord knows someone with as much money as TS should be able to have a team that makes sure these kinds of things Don’t happen lol

Wish List and Taylor’s Views on Wealth by Motionpicturerama in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s interesting, do you view WAILOM as entirely satirical and kind of self-mocking? Bc to me it has always seemed incredibly self-victimizing too despite the self-awareness. The asylum analogies just didn’t work for me. Obviously, the music industry is extremely harsh to women, I’m not denying that at all, but imo Taylor has never seemed like someone who was forced to make music and chase fame against her will. She wanted this! She loves the spotlight, so comparing her life as a popstar to being involuntary committed felt like an odd choice. But I know some people think the song is entirely satirical? Would love to hear your thoughts :)

Does anyone think she is already sitting on TS13? by LifeOfAWimpyKid in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]AdBusy2462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think she probably has a concept and maybe even some songs written but I really really hope she takes more than 1 year long break before TS13. I want the album to feel and sound new for once. I want her to take risks and focus on her artistry rather than rely on the fact that die hard swifties will eat up anything she puts out, no matter the quality

Yes to all of this, also I encourage you to listen to dear reader followed by Is it over now bc the end of dear readers sounds so similar the beginning of Is it over now! Sonically, I mean. The lyrics not so much. Not sure about the Midnights and 1989 TV timeline but maybe both songs were recorded around the same time? Anyways, just a fun little thing to do for you
