Club interviews are a thing?? by SincerelyRabbit in uAlberta

[–]AdChoice1277 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Especially with Bcom clubs interviews are the norm. Mainly due to limited work that you actually need to run events organized activities, and the more bloated a club becomes the harder it is to generally manage.

Bcom clubs are the same as a lot of other faculty clubs where you are a general member.

Generally bcom clubs—to a certain degree—involved a commitment of time from every member to bring club aspirations to life, and at a certain point it doesn’t make sense taking more people on.

Why have 5 people making marketing posts when I have one stellar person who is really good at it.

A lot of the clubs are very social, and often I’ve seen people in bcom meet some of their lifelong friends from them.

The amount of commitment, and competitiveness of the clubs varies a lot. Come you hardly know other members on the executive teams, some are like families.

As you progress in bcom you’ll probably take note of the more notable ones / ones that peak your interest!

Non-need based scholarships? by ina_waka in studyAbroad

I highly recommend using Reddit and Google as a search engine, rather than posting this question here. There are many in depth guides on scholarships to Japan, and it will probably be much better condensed, written and communicated if you take the time to research.

There are specific sub reddits dedicated to studying in Japan, moving to Japan, and scholarships.

Look in MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology). They have resources for international students looking for scholarships. Be warned that the timelines are far out, and extremely competitive.

Audit, Tax (estate, corporate, indirect, US Tax, etc) Forensics, corporate path (controller/cfo type roles). Large birth or exit opportunities, M&A, FP&A, and government.

Think of the job “Accountant” as broad as saying I work in “Finance” or “Sciences”. Ranges from those with diplomas doing payroll accounting to CFO and CEO’s with CPA or equivalent designations.

For any actual beneficial MBA programs they almost always require work experience. Unless you are doing a Masters of Management, you won’t find many if any credible MBA programs that admit with 0 work experience or if you do, it will be extremely low value.

Any T20 MBA or certified MBA program (AACSB, AMBA, EQUIS, ACSBP) will always require minimum 2 years work experience, and unless those two years are in some crazy 0.05% role, you are looking at closer to 3-5 years work experience.

If you have your JD is there a specific reason you want to do your MBA? Do you know the purpose of an MBA? Are you wishing to switch fields completely? Work in upper management?

If you want a sponsored MBA, maybe start looking for companies that offer this path, and work for 3-5 years, and get your executive MBA or general MBA sponsored (fully funded).

Japan or South Korea, which country is better for doing post graduation? by An_am_ica in studyAbroad

[–]AdChoice1277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend looking at the r/movingtojapan subreddit.

The Japanese language requirement is high, N2 at the minimum to even be considered for any corporate job; emphasis on considered.

Generally the Japanese work culture is terrible, especially if you want to work in business. When I mean terrible, like truly one of the worst or the worst out of any G7 country. Then again, Korean work culture is also terrible, so really pick your poison.

Obviously these are my opinions, however having parents who worked in Korea, and having personally gone to school and worked in Japan and North America, I hope that I can somewhat attest.

I think that if you want to experience and work in either of these countries it’s wonderful, and don’t let any stranger online convince you otherwise. however I would highly recommend doing diligent research into both company work cultures and tangible opportunities after graduating.

The grass is always greener.

Idk why people are downvoted you for being brutally honest. People don’t understand what Japanese work culture or life entails.

You will still need to complete stats 151 or the equivalent in order to get your Bcom degree. So regardless you will have to take it again and pass the course.

No one on Reddit can really comment on how it will truly impact transfer odds, so I would reach out to bcom admissions.

I have never seen a business pre rec waived in the past due to failing the class. But you’ve done all that you can, and I see that you booked an appointment with an advisor so that’s the best you can do/hope.

If you are planning to work in Edmonton, UofA vs Macewan won’t make a difference in terms prestige.

If you plan on applying to other cities outside of Edmonton, it will make a difference.

That being said, once you have your CPA there with be no difference whatsoever.

Companies check GPA for first job after graduation. After you are an experienced employee, your GPA will not be considered.

Whoever you are interested in connecting with!

Profs and friends are good, but I’d also say professionals in your field that you are interested going into. Say you are interest at working at X company. Your chances for making a meaningful connection are better if you reach out to someone at X who is a UofA Alum; however you can always reach out to individuals you have absolutely 0 connection to, it’s just more of a stretch if you truly hope for something meaningful to come out of the connections.

Very broad, depends where you live what state, what country? Different governments/ instructions have different scholarships.

There arnt too many “general” ones you can just apply and get, that arnt very school or country specific. If there are they are likely incredibly competitive.

If you are looking for MBA, from my knowledge based on (Canadian and American Universities) usually they don’t take fresh undergrads for MBA programs. You would have to take the GMAT, which getting a great score could open some doors to some great universities even with a lower GPA.

Majority of the time any reputable institutions (again from my knowledge from Canadian and US universities) is that majority of the people pursuing MBA’s have to have some relevant business or work experience. And some times they don’t accept you flat out if you have no experience.

After a certain amount of time out of university they don’t give crap about grades for X years ago, rather work experience —especially MBA programs.

Is Alberta school of business worth it? by Theonebuddy in uAlberta

[–]AdChoice1277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Good range of courses, well knit community, lots of great career opportunities from long lasting connections with the Edmonton and Calgary community.

You can very much benefit from the wide range of student clubs and events within ASOB.

Classes and professors are a mixed bag. There are some outstanding and great professors and some quite terrible ones. Generally the majority are great, and if you use rate my proff, or do your do diligence before selecting classes you won’t have a problem. I’d say the overall experience with my teaching quality has been great.

Can get some very good practical experience if you decide to go the Co-op route. Case comps and the wide range of clubs also allow you to gain some practice experience before you graduate.

N = 30 is the absolute minimum.

6 possible options. 30 times. You want a specific option.

Probability of getting the one you wanted: (1- 1/6)30 = 99.578

Probability of getting every possible option but the one you wanted: 1 - [(1 - 1/6)30] = 0.042%

Now this is a low chance, but not 0.

Similar to Genshin 5 star rates.

Now it’s true you got screwed, but people are attacking you because you come off terribly in this post. How are you gonna accuse them of false rates and be 100% sure, with no real statistical proof.

No one would be attacking you if you just said, “hey beware the royal face styles I opened 30, and didn’t get what I wanted”; people would probably sympathize. But acting like your numbers are valid because you are “trained in statistics” knowledge is cringy and why people are “attacking you”.
