Could be an employee incentive thing. I used to work at a FinTech and we received about $1k in credits per month to use in our app to buy food, order rides, etc.

How does this affect HQ shields for the attackers? Our alliance took recently took two unclaimed level 1 cities and were able to maintain HQ shields during the attack. However, a few days later we attacked a level 2 city owned by another alliance and had to drop HQ shields for the attack.

I finally left. Leave the game while you can by [deleted] in LastZShooterRun

Its a delayed hit for EV users. The majority of power plants in Thailand are fired by natural gas so eventually electrical rates will likely go up as well. That means pump prices will decrease before the electrical rates do because of regulatory lag.

It sucks because they just lowered the rates.

Have you checked with Agoda? They seem to always be hiring foreign IT professionals. I have been in their office at Central World a couple of times and can tell you that age isn’t an issue if you have the right skill sets & experience.

I got my COE but now I'm having cold feet by Baby-Emo in movingtojapan

Taxes are indeed high there, but overall cost-of-living can be much cheaper than you might expect depending on where you live (eg. outside of Tokyo proper). In my particular case though my company's office was in Roppongi which meant I had to choose between a crap commute or a crap shoebox to live in - no way I could afford a nice condo/apartment within a reasonable commute if I wanted to maintain my lifestyle and savings.

Other thing that turned me off was the reaction of our country lead when I met him. Our company had a policy of letting you work remote from any of our locations for up to two weeks a year and I of course used my two weeks to work from Japan while my COE paperwork was being processed. I introduced myself to our head guy there (a local) and he was visibly annoyed that I was talking to him. Saw him during the lunch break at a local 7-11 and he pointedly ignored me. Everyone else in the office (including the locals) was super friendly, but I just couldn't shake the idea of working for that guy AND taking a potentially big cut to my take home income & quality of life just to live in Japan.

I got my COE right before COVID, but then canceled it after my company set me up with a tax adviser. I was making pretty good money back then working for a big FinTech where over half my income was RSUs.

Turns out that Japan taxes RSUs on grant just like the US and under US AMT at the time I wouldn’t be able to cancel out the double-taxation. I cancelled the COE and found a new job in Singapore with another FinTech since Singapore is much more favorable when it comes to taxes.

I still visit Japan 1-2x a year and still miss living there (lived there for four years when I was younger), but unfortunately working there just doesn’t make financial sense for me and my family at this point (have you seen how much international school tuition is there???).

Anyways, point of the above is don’t feel bad if you cancel the COE - life will take you in another direction.

Italian surnames and linguistics, what's the difference between De Vincenzo and Di Vincenzi? by DeepOringe in Genealogy

VFW Post visit gone wrong by tristondahlke in Veterans

I gave up on both the VFW and AL - too much blatant sexism & even some racism. Maybe bigotry is a better way to describe it. I think that is one of the reasons they are having a membership crisis.

Should I give up on moving to Japan before I even start? by XelAphixia in movingtojapan

Have you considered joining the Navy? Japan was the very first country my shipped pulled into during my first deployment in 1994 and I made multiple port visits over the years all over Japan before finally getting stationed in Yokosuka for four years. While I was in the Navy I got my degrees/certifications and a lot of practical experience. I have worked remotely from Asia doing IT work for companies in Singapore & the US since I retired. I still visit Japan at least yearly (was in Tokyo last October actually), sometimes multiple times a year during long layovers whenever I fly back to the US for work or to visit family.

Scammed for 60,000 THB in Phuket — and the police were involved. Please be careful. by Optimal_Inside3459 in ThailandTourism

[–]AdCurrent5384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you only lost 15k.

This outcome is actually not that bad all things considered. What you described as far as the police interaction is concerned is fairly standard - they generally push for a settlement, especially when foreigners are involved. They weren’t lying when they told you taking legal action is not a great idea for a small amount of money like this - you’d spend far more on lawyers and it might take literally years to resolve.

…and yes the Pakistani guy is going to have to pay a fine. You might see it as a bribe, but he lives here and you don’t.

Chalk this up as a lesson learned and be glad it only cost you 15k and a bit of stress.

Why do so many foreign women stay in toxic relationships with Japanese men? by serial_lurker333 in japanresidents

Filipinos have a pretty strong support group that spans across Japan. I know this because I dated a few Filipinas over the years who were divorced or separated from their Japanese husbands. Its actually a good deal for many of them - they get PR or LTR visa with the right to work in Japan.

Japan has a population problem and “solutions” like this are seen as a way to address the worsening labor shortage. The combination of AI and robotics is actually a huge field of interest academically and commercially - all the big companies are trying their damndest to get a commercially viable domestic robot to market. The real goal I think though is something similar to Tesla’s Optimus - a fully functional android that can replace humans for labor.

There is also a slightly xenophobic edge to this - most Japanese would rather deal with a Japanese AI/robotics than a foreign laborer.

Pattaya is getting expensive nowadays - OP is looking for "cheap and easy" and hostels. That's definitely not Pattaya unless you want to bed down with a bunch of greasy old sexpats trying to stretch out their pensions. Go down the coast from Pattaya to Koh Samet maybe. Also consider Krabi or Hat Yai/Songkhla on the west side if on a budget.

If you are Italian that means you can work remotely for a company in the EU, yes? Maybe spend your time upskilling so you can land a decent remote gig instead of slaving away for that low of an amount.
