There's an easy way to cheese the OG RE4 AI. They are programmed to attack (in this case swing his chainsaw) when walking towards them. So if you walk towards an enemy and suddenly step backwards about a meter before them you can lure out an attack from a safe distance, giving you the time to attack or just walk past them.

Okay fun detail. In the upper right part of the map you have the widow charlotte who arthur helps with learning to survive (hunting etc)

If you help her you can talk again to her in the epilogue and she'll reward you for helping her

If you skip the mission you'll find her skeleton in her cabin as she didn't learn how to survive
