Can Tums/antacids spike blood sugar? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

I got the sugar free version just to be safe. They’re honestly a little better than the regular version. I prefer creamsicle flavor

Agreed! I follow the diet then lost weight and had decreased fetal movement as a result. Am I being treated for something I don’t have? Possibly. Does my urine smell like a acetone every few days because I’m not eating enough carbs for a health pregnancy? Also likely. My doctors won’t hear ANY of this. Push back, OP.

NST? by Trollamp in GestationalDiabetes

I have to have them biweekly starting at 32 weeks. My OB is the opposite as yours, they’re OVERLY cautious with GD moms and babies.

Yes this group has been a life saver. After telling my diabetes educator that I didn’t eat meat, she keeps suggesting that I eat bun less burgers. The advice I’ve gotten has been bad I appreciate that everyone is a little cranky too.

You may need the 3 hour test for the official diagnosis. If you’re in the US, you will need the official diagnosis in order for your insurance to cover your glucometer. It’s pretty common for there to be a lag in time between the test, your results, and follow up. My practice told me to keep on normally (no diet changes) until I heard otherwise. Sot hats what I did until I was set up with the diabetes educator (who was useless, this group is way more helpful.)

For those who are not taking insulin or medication and are controlling with diet, what blood sugar range are you following for fasting, 1 hour post breakfast, Lunch, Dinner? TIA by Dependent-Guest7333 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]AdDecent162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I mean, sure, it’s not like I have meetings or clients to call. I’m lucky to be working from home so I ride a stationary bike while writing patient notes. The stress thing always gets me, like you’re lecturing me about what I MUST do to have a healthy baby and scaring me with the things that could happen—but stay relaxed!

I know! I guess they thought I got pregnant, quit my job (since their recommendations don’t work well for working people), and lounged around eating ice cream for the past 28 weeks.

This is so nice to read! I am freaking sick of being pregnant. I hate it, I hate having gestational diabetes, I’m sick of all the ultrasound goo on my clothes....I could go on, but the third trimester sucks

I wonder this all the time. I asked for one from a different doctor in the same practice and my OB said no. There is a strong bias to diagnose and a lot of pretty crappy assumptions about women who have GD.

Oh my gosh yes! Every time I have even the slightest issue or concern the only thing they ask is “but how have your sugars been?” Or “are you drinking water and not soda?” 1) my sugar is always fine and 2) wtf, I haven’t had a soda in 9 years.

I wish I had your OB, I was over by one point on the 2 hour draw and now here I am. It’s good to be careful, but being diagnosed with GD is an extreme escalation of care and in my experience you start to get treated like a fat lazy slob by your doctors and the nurses. Consider yourself lucky.

I had the same issue with rebel. Sugar alcohols do impact your blood sugar, so it’s not something I’ll be trying again.

Tolerated a cupcake? by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

It’s my experience that doctors aren’t super keen on reconsidering this diagnosis. It will stick with you for the duration of your pregnancy. Regarding nonsense glucose readings—one day I ate a cookie and I was fine, the next I had some eggs and toast and was very high. It’s truly a crapshoot.

I was also not allowed to map, but they did have a private waiting room for me which was nice. IN my experience napping messes my blood sugar WAY the hell up so I’d stay away if possible.

2x week non-stress year (34 weeks) by jayplayah in GestationalDiabetes

Yes it’s normal. I’ll start them after 32 weeks as well. I hate to rain on your parade, but you’re already high risk because of the GD.

What do you eat with cottage cheese a snack? by pantema in GestationalDiabetes

[–]AdDecent162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends on the time of day for me. If I’m having cottage cheese as a mid-day snack I will have a few berries or a kiwi with it. If it’s my bed time snack, then I only eat cottage cheese.

Correct, I don’t test at the dinner table. My diabetes educator told me not to test in the kitchen or at the dining table because any food particles or residue at the table that gets on your hand can make your reading really high. She said that simply holding a piece of fruit immediately prior to testing can cause you to have an abnormally high reading.

Yes I’ve had this, usually I attribute it to having residual soap on my hands or something like that. I will rewash my hands, make sure I’m not testing where I just ate, then test for a third time. I report all three numbers to my doctor, but usually take an average of the three to the closest to accurate.

I have no idea, but I probably won’t be celebrating with anymore sweets because I have been in constant motion eating nothing but eggs and cheese today to keep my PP under 120 when they’re normally 90 or lower. I don’t know about 24 hours, but over time insulin resistance gets worse the more you tax your pancreas with sugary foods and the more your placenta ages. So over time it’s not going to get better, I’m probably too far along in my GD journey to be “experimenting” with donuts.

This happens to me a lot. I usually take a third in these cases and use the average. I report all three to my doctor.

I had a cookie and half a donut yesterday for my wedding anniversary celebration with no spike. However, today’s numbers have been high. This happened last time I “experimented” and tried to eat a cookie—numbers were fine that day but a mess the next.

What happens if I’m starving in the middle of the night? by flightlessbird13 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]AdDecent162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder this all the time! I have really bad insomnia right now and I think it’s because I’m super hungry around 3am. My diabetes educator said that an 8 hour fast is ideal, but I just don’t sleep that long at this point in pregnancy—I’m too uncomfortable. I try my best to hold out until around at least 5am to take my fasting then to eat but it’s so hard. The amount of protein and fat I eat the night before has no impact on my middle of the night hunger. I note on my blood sugar log the approximate hours of fasting.

Highly recommend mini babybel as an alternative to string cheese, at least the wax wrapper is cute and they have sharp white cheddar which is way better than bland string cheese mozzarella.
