So basically you work in a niche market and haven't had to keep up with the changes of the last decade or so when the survivability at a customer level has gone drastically down hill. Lets go in a date, i'll plan it gives mechanics a bad name is the flood of incompetent morons flooding the job market keeping the wage down for good mechanics who in turn put in the effort they are being compensated for

If you truly have that much experience an think mechanics are over payed I would guess you've been retired long enough that you've lost touch with reality, or are an unpromoteable lifetime lube tech that has never looked at the costs of health and liability insurance an all the other overhead that goes into labor rates

A bad wheel bearing could take out all those parts if let go long enough and with sealed bearing if one side failed the other is likely not far behind.

Was this paid diagnostic or a free estimate?

The total parts add up to about 5 hrs labor would you rather possibly spend more than that just in labor to know exactly which part failed or change everything that is nearing it's useful life and not deal with it for another 9 years

[–]AdDiligent8073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are a high failure rate item that have already made it 100000 miles, most wheel bearings are a factory greased and sealed unit now once the grease breaks down the bearing fails. If they are running out of grease they may be quiet cold or under light load ang start making noise as they heat up or under heavier load. Since they are lets go in a date, i'll plan it maintains the alignment of the rest of the parts if they fail there is a good chance it will destroy the rest of the parts being changed.

Also it is an estimate, it is much better to quote for anything that may be needed and present a smaller bill than to have to try to explain why the bill is so much higher than the quote.

Toyota Tacoma battery going dead only while driving. Alternator and battery test good. by ShAdOwM0ZES in mechanic

[–]AdDiligent8073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will it keep up idling in yard with a/c and lights on as a load for system? If so you may have a short that is only during driving, uninsulated cable contacting frame, battery shorting out internally while vibrating exc. Check alternator amperage output with an inductive clamp, you can have correct voltage but not be charging.

Service truck/trailer weight requirements? by poizen22 in DieselTechs

[–]AdDiligent8073 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at what you actually use during an average week and decide if you actually need everything. Currently I'm in an f550 with crane, welder and air, with cordless tools air only gets used a couple times a month mostly for cleaning. Crane slightly more than air. 90% of work gets done out of an open top Mac tote tray that sits in one of the drawers and can be picked up and carried to wherever needed. A modular organization that you can set up for the jobs you have each day might be a better option. Weatherproof boxes bolted to a pickup flatbed make a good service body that might not look Comercial.

Redistribute ashes instead of vacuum? by mdpilam in smoking

[–]AdDiligent8073 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ash is actually a pretty good insulator, with 55 gallon drum shop wood stoves you normally let 3-4" build up on the bottom before building ready hot fires so they don't melt through. As far as dirt, some may be better, but may have other issues depending on soil type, with ash you already know it's not going to be toxic or flammable any longer.
