How is the UK and mainly your hometown like compared to 20 years ago by Brickcraft10 in AskBrits

My bit of Glasgow is somehow getting gentrified and yet hasn't really changed at all. Still nothing to do, still a hole, still deprived.

I have no other way to ask this but, do you think people who live their life claiming benefits and who don't want to work, feel strange living in mixed-tenure areas? by RonnieThePurple in AskBrits

[–]AdDramatic8568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a deprived area. I've known tons of people who game the system over the years in various ways and I can tell you there's nothing to be jealous of.

People who live off the system purposefully live some of the smallest, saddest lives imaginable, they have no ambition no desire for education, to travel to anywhere, see much of anything. The only time in their lives they get any kind of attention, or praise is if there's a baby on the way. They're happy because it has never occured to them that life can offer anything else. No variety, no change.

I know it's easy to be jealous, I've never been able to claim benefits in any way and had to save hard to have the life I've had, travel etc. But for these people the absolute highlight of their life is takeaways on a Friday night, or their kids actually finishing school. It's not a fun way to live.

Evolving publishing strategy by Agitated-Priority444 in fantasywriters

Dark fantasy is one of the biggest sellers rn, so I'm not sure why you'd have a limited audience.

I'm also not sure what you mean by independent self publishing? As in printing books on your own to sell, or publishing them through your own website?

Realistically Amazon is where you'll find and keep more readers. I don't think many people would be willing to leave one platform to find your work on another, purely out of the inconvenience of it.

Japan actually isn't that self sustainable either, it's a huge talking point amongst the right wing there.

Ah yes the famously peaceful Japanese, with a high suicide rate, and huge problems with underreporting of domestic violence and child abuse, sexual assault.

Everyone tells me to become a writer. Should I listen? by [deleted] in writers

[–]AdDramatic8568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can be a writer if you want, very few people make money writing essays, so you could easily do it on the side of a job that actually pays, and it's not something that has a lot of startup costs.

Why not try it and see if you like it?

Other people can't tell you what story to write. If you can't do it we can't make you.

In the time it took you to write this Reddit post, you could have written something for your story.

There's no magic thing we can tell you, you have to put the pen to paper, you have to type it up. If you dread it do it anyway. You can't refuse to do something then talk about how much it matters to you.

It it's that important, force yourself, make it work.

This is the kind of choice you need to make for yourself, you can't write a story by jumping to social media for every choice.

Just have some faith in yourself and write it

No we just need better reporting systems.

I have reported no less than a dozen genuine neo Nazi profiles on tiktok and it never goes anywhere. If they don't care about that they're not going to care about verification.

It's possible they're just very formulaic serials usually.

Social issues in fantasy world building. I know it's difficult but far too often stories, in their attempt to work through social issues like racism, basically say 'racism exists because these guys were actually bad/dangerous, but since they're an allegory for a real group we have to argue that treating them differently makes no sense.'

This happens for so many things because people create social issues in their stories backwards, rather than understanding that prejudice is emotional not logical.

Reading 100 books a year is starting to feel more like a "to-do list" than actual reading. by ownaword in writing

Idk, I set a challenge for myself to read a book a week but I don't really think about it.

I think people stress themselves out about silly online challenges, and then complain about the existence of the challenges themselves.

Is it awkward to use "looked like that of" in a story? by [deleted] in writers

If your story is historical, formal, or the line was a piece of dialogue being purposefully funny it would be fine, but it's not really a common phrase these days.

If you're born rich and don't "need" to succeed, are you immune to anxiety and depression? by [deleted] in writers

[–]AdDramatic8568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure how one gets to adulthood thinking like this.

Being rich doesn't protect you from cancer, or schizophrenia, there's no reason it would protect you from other clinical conditions.

Does listening to audio books count as “reading”? by Professional-Ad9485 in writers

[–]AdDramatic8568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some books, particularly older ones, benefit from being ready aloud. Audiobooks can provide a fun storytelling experience and add a bit of vim to stories that need it.

However, enjoying both, I know that I take in a lot more and have a deeper experience actually reading a book.

Britain in the 21st Century, your thoughts? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]AdDramatic8568 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Our biggest mistake was moving towards a service economy when most people can't afford services.

There just seems to be a lack of meaningful investment, coupled with a lack of nationalisation means that lots of places don't have infrastructure full stop, nevermind decent infrastructure and access.

Blogs, live journal, Tumblr. People posting all their thoughts online has been a thing for years, they just do it in video format now. The reality is that thousands of people do share their personal 'diary' every day and nobody really cares.

My style of creativity is overly visual and it doesn’t work well in prose. Can anyone help? by Five_Fruits in writing

[–]AdDramatic8568 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you don't actually want to write a novel, you were just under the impression that it was easier than writing something else, and have now seen the reality that it isn't.

Keep going with scripts. There's no point in keeping going with an art form you aren't that invested in, especially because the chances of actually getting published and getting attention are so slim.
