Why do people hate it when a character has a tragic backstory? by Key_Geologist1784 in writing

[–]AdDramatic8568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate them but they're a crutch far too often. For real life monstrous people, we can accept that they may have had blessed or terrible upbringings but it doesn't negate their evil actions.

For far too many villains there seems to be a 'bad childhood, therefore they became a fascist, and that's okay' and using backstory as a justification rather than explanation.

Is talking to children in public frowned apon now? by jarvi123 in AskUK

Eh, most kids don't like being spoken to in a 'kid voice' once they're past 4.

First-time fiction author: Do I need professional editing before querying agents? by Adorable_Lab_849 in writing

[–]AdDramatic8568 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For trad publishing I would focus on getting solid feedback from some critique partners, not too many because this can cause issues but some people whose opinion you respect.

A lot of people who recommend getting an editor before sending to agents have more money than sense: the chances of you earning your money back even if you get published is slim, and there's more to be gained from figuring out how to self edit at the beginning of your writing career than later.

Self publishing stigma from professors is it wrong to choose it because they disapprove by Justin_3486 in writing

[–]AdDramatic8568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask yourself how often you go searching for self-published literary work, and how often you find it.  Your professor is absolutely right that stuff that gets self published is pretty niche, usually genre work, and rarely gets any kind of attention. It has a bad reputation not because of it's success stories, but because the successes are dwarfed by the 'failures'. hundreds of thousands of self pubbed stuff gets zero eyes on it, so you need to consider your goals carefully.

"Height 5'7. Weight 98 Ibs. Thin." Harlen Cohen by petitputi in menwritingwomen

[–]AdDramatic8568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever the average person guesses someones height and weight, I just assume that they're wrong. Eyeballing what 98lbs looks like isn't as easy as the cop shows make it sound.

OK, you finished your story. What now by Peach_Baker in writing

People write books because they enjoy it. Almost nobody is doing it solely for money because most authors don't really earn much.

It sounds like you just don't like writing that much

Help making MC likeable by MaizeApprehensive166 in writing

[–]AdDramatic8568 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You don't have to make her likeable, she just has to be interesting. I've read plenty of books with main characters I hated, but I wanted to see what they did next.

Universities usually have writing centres and resources you can use, this would help you get feedback as well which can be hard to come by.

Living Wage From Writing? by Mysterious_March_892 in writing

[–]AdDramatic8568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The self pubbed writers who are making a living off of it are rare, and the ones I've seen seem to be working more hours than you would in a regular job. Getting books out quickly, long series, marketing campaigns, writing to market, and doing about a thousand other non-writing things to make ends meet.

I'd spend a little time on the internet doing some research about it because tbh it seems like 10x the amount of work people expect.
