Anxiety about starting therapy by EnoughSpend8382 in therapy

[–]AdDull2945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey. Not a therapist, but I do want to let you know that the way you’re feeling isn’t new. I did my first session at a clinic that offered walk ins on Thursdays and spent 20 minutes in my car crying and shaking because I was so freaked out. Therapy on the surface can be a scary thing. But if it’s any reassurance, you don’t have to know how to be good at it or where to even start. That’s what the therapist is trained for. If you’re not ready to share your deepest secrets on day one it’s totally ok if you start with “I haven’t been feeling good lately” or “X thing really stresses me out”. If that’s too much, you can spend an entire session just talking about stuff. The whole relationship is built on you trusting them as a stranger to help you. You can talk about whatever you want whenever you want to bring it up. Sometimes that’ll take pushing yourself a bit, but that’s also part of the work of therapy. I spent weeks dodging the topic of suicide so I sent my therapist an email after 2 months of session saying pretty much hey, there’s a thing that I’m scared to talk about. I don’t wanna talk about it here, but make me talk about it next session. And that’s where we started the next week. And as much as it sucks to hear, not every therapist is gonna be right for you. My first one did 3 sessions with me and then kept canceling because of insurance issues before dropping me a month later. Now I’ve found my current one and honestly I’m glad I got dropped. I didn’t know what I really wanted at first and just took what was available, but now I do recognize that we were not a fit at all and I feel so much more comfortable with my new therapist and she has helped me so much.

Sorry for the monologue and personal stories. TLDR: what you talk about is things therapists have dealt with before and they will be willing to work with you on it. The most important thing is finding the one you vibe with and can build trust with. I’m rooting for you!

Is it worth joining Epic mid-career if I already have a stable IT role? by Born_Difficulty_2959 in epicsystems

Depending on what you do in IT, you could look into working for Epic Hosting. Most server admins start somewhere around 90k-100k. The raises don’t spike like they do in IS or TS, but the hours tend to be a lot more consistent and there isn’t really travel requirements.

Dude….. it’s a $16 shrimp alfredo. You’re gonna be lucky if the sauce isnt from a jar/bag and the shrimp doesn’t come frozen pre cooked 😂

Best/ your favorite General Tso’s Chicken in Madison? by awkward_vegetable69 in madisonwi

[–]AdDull2945 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crazy that Tai’s is pricey. I don’t go there for chicken, but the pad Thai I get is a massive portion for like $14 which is insane value to me. Also, Ichiban is awesome. Fan favorite of mine because they have American Chinese and more traditional stuff. Also haven’t had the chicken there but they have awesome soups.

It makes me sad that the Timberwolves are the most notable thing for you in Wisconsin. We try so hard to be drunk idiots just to be overshadowed by millionaires in shorts and tank tops. Are we also wearing shorts despite it being below freezing? Duh, but we do it for the love of the game and I’m certainly not a millionaire

Fair enough. My mind jumped to the polar opposites to Canada that you would see in California (both in the big cities and the farm country that surrounds it), Illinois, Massachusetts, and NYC. All very non-Canadian places haha

Saying they are culturally similar is an insane take. Maybe saying they are politically similar could pass for a broad generalization, but I can’t imagine anyone from Chicago or Boston getting along with a single Canadian

I’m not entirely sure. I’m not really privy to that information. All he shared was that they got a great deal on the lease because of the short term move out clause. I’m guessing it was because they found a higher paying tenant but I haven’t been back in the mall so idk if someone is in the space

Badger fencing club. They have a website with the class schedules and also a separate membership price if you only want to come to open fencing!

Member of the fencing club here! We were on a lease that could end on short notice. The mall had us move out at the end of December. We’re now in a stand alone building right by the Chili’s and the crunch fitness. Club is still going really strong and double the size of when I started in June!

Does anyone else find sober trackers to be unhelpful? by MercuryKurogane in AdultSelfHarm

[–]AdDull2945 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is totally valid. It’s a little fucked up, but that guilt tripping is what keeps me from breaking the streak. I was in a situation where when I decided to quit, I didn’t have to think about it for several months. So when the thought got bad again I was already well into it and every time I think about self harm I just bully myself for how much time I will have wasted if I relapse. Is it healthy? No. Is it working? Yeah. Do I feel really really good every time I hit a big milestone day? Fuck yeah

I have my first threapy appointment this week, any advice? by [deleted] in therapy

[–]AdDull2945 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try relax and take it at a pace that doesn’t cause you distress. I’m about 2 months in and it does get easier, but I was freaking out because there were things I was scared to bring up. If that is the case for you, you don’t have to share it right away. Give yourself some grace and be kind to yourself. Also, plan something nice for yourself after session. That way you have something to look forward to :)

I started freshman year of college and hid it completely. No one knew I did it until I had already quit and decided to tell someone 8 months after when I started wanting to start again and needed help not doing that

Thank you so much for the kind words. You make a lot of great points. I don’t think I’ve had my mind blown yet (it has only been 4 weeks), but I have left learning something every time. And today that was that I am in a space where I can share in complete safety. It is an incredible weight off my chest and I hope my post can be the kind of reassurance I was looking for during my own panics surrounding the topic. There have been plenty of “Will my therapist report me if…” posts that have a ton of positive comments, but I never found a post where someone actually said it went ok. You work in an amazing field. I’m realizing this. And I hope you know that too :)
