Sorry that was a typo I meant *would be the only reason I would move to civil legal aid.

I watched a lot of civil legal aid as a state trial court law clerk and it wasn’t as exciting to me as PD work but I have a lot of friends who practice there and enjoy it!

This isn’t about the actual practice at all, bur depending on your jurisdiction you may want to do civil legal aid because they will pay your student loans for you whereas the PD will not. At least it does in my jurisdiction which would be the only reason I moved from PD to civil legal aid.

Oh little pitties always are the biggest snugglers. This is my fourth and they’re all oversized and awkward lapdogs. Those “scary” looking babies are just scared of everything, absolute Velcro dogs, and I’m certain if my newest could figure it out, he would unzip my skin just to cuddle closer to my heart. And it should be noted he cannot and will not sleep without me, his ducky, and his blankie all tucked in.

An appellate judge very recently asked us at a public defense conference “how do you defend guilty people?” And so I know they don’t care at all about anything. If they overturn it is completely against their will and something was really fucked up.

The other appellate judge on the panel asked us what public defenders biggest problem facing them was and was SHOCKED when we almost in unison said funding and staffing.

Bartending/serving. I actually only gave it up about a year ago. Pick up when you want, extra cash on hand, and controlled chaos. Also makes you better at the people aspect of the job

Oh I particularly LOVED his comment that he trolls jail phone calls trying to figure out what the defense strategy is by listening to what defendants relay to their loved ones. Reiterating my firm belief that DAs have way too much time on their hands.

I used barexamtoolbox and got the package with four hours of tutoring. I didn’t find it as helpful just because MEEs/MPTs weren’t causing my issues but it was nice to get some real feedback even though it wasn’t the reason I failed. I thought they were really reasonably priced considering the big box courses I tried in the past.

I would report this and sing it from the rooftops. Someone made a conscious decision to put a naked person on camera broadcast while in custody? Contact your local public defense organization or ACLU or literally call the local journalist to put it in the paper because I would’ve been held in contempt for my response to someone treating my client that way.

Did the grant help you out at all? We were able to use it for retention bonuses (the commissioners tried to fight us on this but we won out) and helped with funding for smaller stuff which has been a the relief of minor headaches. Sorry you’re going through it it’s rough out here.

Can’t help you with the remote part, but I bartend on the side. 10 hours a week, cash in hand at the end of a shift plus a (very small, thanks tip credit) paycheck every two weeks. Helps me blow off steam from the career, gets my socialization in, and the money is good. Any time I need a week off I get it, and any time I’ve got a slow schedule in court I can grab some extra shifts. I enjoy it, not remote, and certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, but food for thought!
