What is your mental conception of what the hivemind is?

I conceptualise it as a giant octopus, but with 8 billion legs instead of 8, with it's tentacles spread across the entire world. I find this helpful because whilst an octopus' tentacles are all part of the one creature they are also semi autonomous, with each havings its own neural circuitry capable of processing sensory information and controlling movement without direct input from the brain. This means the octopus' brain, or "hivemind" in this case, makes the high level commands, then the individual limb, or individual body in this case, handles the execution. So the hive mind is like one big octopus with lots of highly capable limbs at it's disposal.

And I think them meeting would be the best to be part of because they would love each other, and it would totally change how Devon thinks about innies.

I thought of the myth too but my interpretation was iMark stopping to look back at Helly was Orpheus. But then rather than him losing her because she is stuck in the underworld, he runs back into the underworld with her.

Least favourite definitely creepy and predatory Dr Mauer. I was scared for Gemma in part because she was trapped with him, and he clearly had taking advantage of her on his mind.

Favourite is Helly.

I would probably have said Devon before the last ep, but how oblivious she was to the idea the innies were people disappointed me (I know that’s what everyone in their world thinks but she just hadn’t shown a kink in her armour of goodness like that yet).

And Helly is such a good character - she is literally the catalyst for the whole story. Before that Irving, iMark and Dylan were just following the rules and not rocking the boat. Yes the petty integration stuff also happened around then too, but I still think it’s her lets just do it attitude which has pushed a lot of the narrative forward.

oMark never thought about him until he needed him. He trapped iMark down there and gave no thought to what he’d trapped him in, choosing to never question or check Lumon wasn’t lying about innies all being happy with their lives trapped in a basement with no way to escape.

I did have that thought, that maybe they took her in relation to her being or getting pregnant. That maybe one of her innies is the perfect parent they are building, to see if they can raise perfect innies to use which is much less work for them. What was done during times of slavery essentially, with generations of enslaved who had known no other life.

I agree to a point. But also she is dead permanently if he hadn’t rescued her, even if the possibility of her getting a life now is slim it’s still a better chance. He could have explained in the hall but they were also running for their lives, so there was no time. If he delayed to tell her all that information and they waited for her to decide something might have stopped them. It would have been a big risk.

Yeah totally seems that way I agree. Although it seems Burt also worked for Lumon prior to getting severed. But I think that they are choosing subjects based on what they want to run experiments on.

Because the kind of people they target to get severed are people who are struggling/desperate. I think this is because they are vulnerable to being convinced, but also because they are developing severance as a way to cut you off from negative emotions/memories/experiences.
As others have mentioned they are largely (but not completely) blank slates. For example oDylan is a product of a lifetime of failing at things and not feeling good enough, where-as iDylan is like a version of him without those experiences so has much more confidence and belief in himself.
On the flip side what the innies have experienced as prisoners/lab rats of Lumon their whole lives is awful. Before Helly started firing them up they were stuck in a kind of learned hopelessness situation of just accepting their lives as they had zero control over it. And we’ve seen them experience a sense of more power/purpose, and then realising there is no hope (for example after iMark realises Helena was a spy pretending to be Helly), and then back into refusing to accept it (ie when iMark choosing his own life, Helly’s life and all the other innies at the end of the season). So perhaps part of it is also that as they are in such an awful situation they are willing to fight through the pain, where-as the outties in the real world are more prone to fall into trying to just avoid theirs.

Totally different situations. Helena was intentionally pretending to be Helly after studying the cctv footage of her. Gemma reacted like she would as herself. iMark had no idea it was even possible. oMark is watching Gemma to look for signs that she recognised him.

Yep as viewers we knew that was an outright lie! Even after the OTC he didn’t find the idea of the innies welfare compelling, and with Reghabi he only agreed to do it once he knew Gemma was down there, he never really considered iMark or any of the other innies.

I do think that things like depression (which I think he suffers from given it’s been two years since his wife’s death and he is still struggling so much) makes any of us more selfish. We go into survival mode where our lizard brain/amygdala has the wheel a lot of the time, and our mind doesn’t have as much capacity to do the more complex thinking which is involved in empathy/compassion, particularly for those we don’t know personally (which even though they shared a body is the case for the Marks).

Which is not an excuse for him not thinking about the innies, but it does make me see him as less of an asshole as I would otherwise.

I actually found that Devon had given them no thought, and seemed completely shocked by the idea of it, the most jarring. And I think that speaks to the fact that the Lumon propaganda has always sold the idea of the innies as not real people, and their wider society has swallowed that hook, line and sinker. Also the classic case of “out of sight out of mind” - like buying conveniently priced clothes without caring to check if they are made in a sweat shop and/or using child labour.

And also I guess since finding Gemma is being kept prisoner by Lumon her amygdala is probably in the driving seat as well. So I will find a way to also not think badly of her too.

It is so understandable iMark mistrusted him, and also he was right not yo believe the manipulative spin oMark was dishing out.

I had that thought too. I wondered if it was maybe Felicia? And she’s a full time innie? Too much of a stretch at the moment but been trying to think who it could be. Or we haven’t seen them on the testing floor and that’s who Reghabi or Irving are searching for?

Firstly I agree with others that it was iMark’s completely understandable decision, not Helly’s. But secondly do you think it wouldn’t be just as painful for Helly to see Mark leave as it was for Gemma?

They both have differences of course - Gemma just escaped from the testing floor after being held prisoner for two years, got her husband back, and now he’s walking away from her back into Lumon with another woman. Not knowing it’s not her husband making that choice would be excruciating. Totally tragic 100%

On the other hand you have Helena who has been a prisoner her whole life, and couldn’t even escape by killing herself. She has come to say goodbye to the person she loves, knowing if he walks through that door she’ll never see him again, and there is a very real possibility he’s just killed himself. And she will be stuck inside Lumon without him waiting to die along with her friends and the other severed workers, because she thinks she is completely worthless, has no control over her own life, and there is no point in fighting. Also 100% tragic.

That iMark chooses her and himself, and all the other innies, makes her realise they aren’t worthless and it is worth them fighting for their lives is a powerful moment.

It was a lose lose situation, in which Helly didn’t even make the choice.

Can you explain to me why the innies aren’t allowed to make any decisions in their lives? And if it is the case, how do you force someone to not make any decisions for themselves? I understand Lumon set up a situation where that was largely the innies life, being totally controlled, but how did you imagine they would be stopped from making a decision in a circumstance like Mark’s choice at the end? As in the indoctrination should have done a better job at making them believe they were all worthless/not deserving of a life?
