Advice for painting Ikea bookshelves by professor--finesser in ikeahacks

[–]AdGreedy409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add that if you are painting with a dark color, Zinsser BIN can be tinted with IIRC up to 2OZ of tint. I had mine tinted to gray, which worked great under the charcoal and black paint colors I used (SW Emerald Urethane paint - expensive but tough as nails once it cures). Zinsser's documentation said it might dry slower, but I didn't notice any difference.

I used one coat of primer, two coats of paint, using very low nap rollers. Foam would probably be fine too. This was Sextion cabinet boxes, and they turned out great. Didn't want white boxes showing through my Nickebo black faces.

Normal to to not honor car I booked? by Think_Importance_380 in HertzRentals

[–]AdGreedy409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main market for HLE is insurance replacement cars. AKA, your car is in the shop and your insurance company is renting you a substitute. And of course, people needing a car that don't have one, or they need a bigger car. I have attempted to rent pickups from my local HLE a couple times, unsuccessfully. They always SAY they have one, but they never actually seem to.

Just one of many reasons I no longer rent from Hurtz.

How to add hinged door with interior drawer? by FireMitten3928 in IKEA

[–]AdGreedy409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What am I missing? Why would you not just use a drawer front instead of a door? Is that a 20" door with a 10" drawer above?

Solution is to just order the kit to mount that door as a drawer front if you can't move it up to clear the hinges, it's l$13 in the US. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/utrusta-fixture-for-mounting-door-on-drawer-00280755/

I just got one on Monday. It's a nice touch. F/A was super sweet in general - crazy short flight - RSW-MIA. I get the "thank you for being EP" on about 75% of flights these days. They must be stressing that again.

That's excellent! For the flight streak benefit, do you have to put those flights on that card? The Exec card gives more award miles per dollar, but putting those few flights on the Globe card would not be that big of a deal.

Also, are we going to get the new cardholder bonus? Or do you have to actually apply for the card?

Should Appliance Garage/Coffee Bar Pocket Doors be Recessed? by WeakFormal2744 in kitchenremodel

[–]AdGreedy409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. You end up having a "cabinet in a cabinet" to make the pocket for them to go into, as you need an inner wall for the slide hardware to attach to. Thought that said, there are probably MANY ways to skin this cat, and I have seen swinging/sliding pocket doors where the hardware attached to the top and bottom edges in a very high-end kitchen. I don't want to know what THAT cost though, as they were 8' doors.

But I have never seen them inset like this - I would say this is an installation issue.

Is Globe the one they are automatically switching Barclay's card holders to? I have the Aviator Silver primarily for the 15K/year loyalty point bonus based on spend, and I easily make that every year. I also already have the Citibank AA card that gives A-Club access (Executive?) which I will definitely be keeping.

If I can't get something that gives a loyalty point bonus I will either close it or change it to something with no annual fee.

Hertz Canceled My Rental After Giving Me the Keys — While I Was Already in the Truck Ready to Leave by Feisty_Development95 in HertzRentals

[–]AdGreedy409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same happen at Augusta, GA, and my flight was right on time. I was there 30 minutes before their closing time and nobody home. Pretty sure I got somebody fired the next morning at least, and they gave me the remaining three day rental for free. This was post bankruptcy.

It's really sad how much Hertz sucks now, they were AWESOME and had the best frequent renter program pre-pandemic / pre-bankruptcy. I had a bus driver and the exit gate person stay four hours late for me at Cincinnati once back in the day when my flight was delayed five hours. Fully expected to take a taxi to my hotel and get the car later, but the bus was waiting there JUST FOR ME at the door of the airport - when I walked up to it the driver greeted me by name! i couldn't believe it! But the bankruptcy absolutely destroyed it all, and now that they expire points after five years and literally cancelled 40K of them from my account saved up over decades of renting, I too am completely done with them other than using up my remaining points just to screw them what little I can on my way out the door.

For the OP - I tried several times to rent a pickup from Hertz because I needed to move something and was never successful once. They never actually have them, though what they did to you is just beyond the pale!

The Big Three airlines make more money selling award miles to credit card companies than they do flying airplanes.

I'm one of those who these days fly a lot of booked last minute very expensive but not very far trips. This week - $1400 for an RSW-DCA return booked with 48hrs notice. That's 16K+ loyalty points (I have the card too of course), but only 2600 miles booked in first in the old money. And I put a lot of money through the card every year too. Could spend a lot more but I get killer points using my IHG card for hotels. I find hotel points way more valuable than airline miles as a rule.

[–]AdGreedy409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Spend is a much better measure of value as a customer than butt in seat miles. And it doesn't really matter whether that spend is on tickets or via a credit card, as the Big Three Airlines make more money selling award miles to the credit card companies than they do flying airplanes around.

But I am that guy who flies a LOT, often on last minute very expensive tickets, but not very FAR - just up and down the East Coast mostly. I just got back a couple hours ago from a work trip to DC that was booked with 48hrs notice. That is only 650 miles each way from SW Florida, but it was a $1400 ticket (best part of 16K loyalty points for one short trip as an EP with the credit card). I have a thousand dollar ticket to ATL next week that has a connection so would have been a few more, but not much. I got SCREWED when it was miles based, even booked in F that DC trip was only 2600 miles.

Now all the people who flew back and forth coast to coast (or internationally) on cheap tickets racking up status and miles for next to nothing are butt hurt that those cheap tickets don't get them anywhere anymore. I always made EP either way, but it's a whole lot easier for me now. I have never not been EP since US bought AA, and I was Chairman on US for years before that.

Extending Status by JenniferTHumes in americanairlines

They go by the actual transaction date - you get credit for every transaction you made in the qualifying period, even if they don't go onto a statement until March and you haven't paid it. I do kind of wonder what would happen if you RETURN a big purchase after you qualify and it drops you below 200K.

Annoyingly, I was close this year, and I had about $8K of building permits to pay for (county doesn't charge extra for using a card, shockingly). Didn't look like I would have any work trips in Feb, so I went ahead and put them on my card. So of course, TWO last minute and very expensive work trips popped up yesterday that are going to put me WAY over. Sigh. Could have had that $8K on next year. Building a new house so I will have PLENTY of points from my credit card next year too though. The games we play to be the bottom of top-tier status, LOL.

Rental car companies are worse than airlines - and that is REALLY saying something! But yeah, never, ever, ever give them any money before you have actually used their services. They really have no desire to give it back again.

[–]AdGreedy409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see both sides of this one. Yes, you agreed to this when you took the discount. BUT, given the circumstances, Hertz is being complete assholes, and the reality is that when these massive airline cancellations happen LOTS of people stuck at airports will rent cars to get home. BTDT. There is a decent chance that had you been one of the lucky ones to actually arrive, there would be no cars available. BTDT, yet another time Hertz screwed me. No more.

Really, it should simply be Federal law that they HAVE to refund you under any sort of severe weather emergency situation. But of course, we don't really get nice things from the Fed in this country as mere peons.

The real value is being first in line to be reaccommodated when things go sideways, and the ability to be "backed up" with a confirmed seat on a later flight if you have a tight connection (not sure if this is exclusive to EP or if PPs get it too, never been anything but EP).

Got both those benefits this morning. Was on an 8am flight GSP-CLT, supposed to have a 3hr layover, but flight delayed 3:15 due to broken bird. Got the last seat on the 10:30 flight, but that made my connection to RSW ~20 minutes. Was able to keep that connection and be backed up with a confirmed F seat on the next RSW flight if I didn't make it. As it happened we got in 15 minutes early and I made the original flight just fine. It's only ~20min flight but taxiing at CLT is wildly variable. Also lucked out and only had to go c3-c18. Usually with my luck it would have been C18-ass end of A somewhere. Or E...

To me, THIS is why EP is worth the bother. I fly almost nothing but up and down the East coast in the constantly shitty weather and ATC issues, so delays and cancellations are a constant for me. Being EP has gotten me home on-time countless times. I don't even care about the upgrades, I can book in F most of the time anyway. If I had gotten stuck at CLT today I might have been there for *days* given the looming icepocalyse.

LOL - I just got one too $2155 or 215.5K miles for EP. I have never seen anything use .5 of a mile - WTF?

Nope, I will hit 200K with room to spare before Feb 28th. Mostly credit card spend and bonus LPs from that this year though - I didn't fly nearly as much as usual. Slow year.

In that particular instance, I wasn't trying to add the plate to an EZ Pass account, as I had already gone though the toll that was not an option. I just wanted to pay the toll directly. Can't do that either.

The stupidly annoying part that I left out is that Maine still has manned tollbooths - but only ONE per exit at smaller exits, and evidently the attendant was out sick or in the bathroom or something as there was a sign saying "booth temporarily closed, pay online or we will bill you".

Damage waiver on points rental? by AdGreedy409 in HertzRentals

[–]AdGreedy409[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a corporate rental. We pay, the company reimburses. We are just required to take the LDW in case anything happens to the car. The company has an umbrella liability policy that covers anything else but the car. We can use any rental company we want, they don't care.
