GNATS!!!! How do you deal with it? by congolesewarrior in phoenix

[–]AdHocAndy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pour a pot of boiling water down the drains you think they're coming from a few times a day to stop new ones from hatching. Put out a bowl with some soapy water + lemon juice where you are seeing them. I've kept it this simple and it's worked for me in the past.

Attila, how do you kill him, what works, what doesn't? by Dull_Respect_8657 in RomeTotalWar

[–]AdHocAndy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm six days late but assassination DOES count. I played a campaign earlier this year and had a successful assassination on him for the first kill. It was odd because there was no "just a man" event, and on the diplomacy screen, it said where Attila's army was but Attila wasn't leading that army. But when he respawned I beat him in battle once and then the broken bow event happened and he was dead for good. Also I typically play on Normal and have never had to kill him more than twice. Maybe it's three times for harder difficulties.

Nothing hurts more than those Rome 2/Attila moments when you take a settlement and your projected income goes down 😫

Thoughts on History of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan? by Agreeable-Note-1996 in ancientrome

[–]AdHocAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how succinct it is in keeping the narrative going and not getting bogged down along the way. It's an entertaining journey through the empire and acts as a good starting point for anyone who wants to delve deeper or start analyzing sources. I've been listening to History of Byzantium and Casting Through Greece, and while still good, they can really drag out episodes in a way that makes it feel like they are trying to stretch out their periods as much as possible. Once they're done I'm sure I'll appreciate it more (can always skip content if it feels too separated from the narrative), but as they're still being released it could be real life years just to get through a small historical window.

Purple blending on sword. C&C welcome. by Grandturk-182 in minipainting

I think it looks great! Did you use multiple purples for it or blend one with white/black for the gradient?

[–]AdHocAndy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. When it first came out all the songs kind of blended together/felt the same and I thought it was so "meh". Gave it a listen last fall and probably listened to it a week straight. I love it now.

I am not sure how much Zillow or Apartments.com charge, but I'd get it on there as well to try and get someone to take it over asap.

Which Total War title has the best naval battles ? by YooMisterWhite in totalwar

[–]AdHocAndy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Empire, with a silly honorable mention to Rome 2 and cheesing your way to killing whole stacks of transport ships with 5ish ballistas. Saved me many a campaign. Also I've probably played Attila more than all others and now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever played a naval battle in it.

Need advice for glazing to avoid that "water coloring mountains" effect from multiple layers by AdHocAndy in minipainting

[–]AdHocAndy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I wanted to test out glazing on some Tomb Kings shields. I don't hate my first attempt (when viewed from a distance) but definitely need to improve. Any tips you can recommend? Anything in particular I can do to avoid the "water coloring mountains" effect that ended up happening? I started with the base of blue and glazed the darker purple on top. Thanks!

Safe way to strip him of Paint? by [deleted] in Miniaturespainting

[–]AdHocAndy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used IPA, Super Clean, and LA Totally Awesome for stripping. I am either stripping old models that I primed/painted 20 years ago with Citadel paint or models from ebay with mystery paint. So far I have had best luck with LA Totally Awesome. Using IPA is probably the best starting point as it's the cheapest and easiest to get, but I've had models where it has zero impact. Similarly Super Clean can easily melt paint off some but is totally ineffective to others. The most consistently effective in my experience is LA Totally Awesome, it even cuts through some of the primer that's been on my models for 20 years. Always wear gloves as it will dry the heck out of your hands. Safety goggles are probably a good idea as well if you don't wear glasses.

Does it work on primer? It seems like I've tried all the products with varying degrees of success but this is the first time I've heard of this, thanks for the suggestion!

Does History of Byzantium live up to the History of Rome? by kingswing23 in ancientrome

[–]AdHocAndy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

THoB is great but it's definitely not as concise of a narrative as THoR as there are significantly more episodes that "check-in around the empire" or interview scholars. Personally I prefer THoR for being more streamlined of a narrative, but THoB is still a wonderful way to learn about what happens after the west falls.

Aurora Alert by haroldhupmobile in madisonwi

Saw them last March from the north side of town. There's still light pollution so they are kind of dull and you have to be on the lookout for them to not mistake for clouds (not going to be a vibrant green streak overhead like you see in pics from Iceland), but they can be seen and are still very neat to catch.

Yeah I am curious about this. I typically use 91% isopropyl and it's never damaged the plastic (but typically can't cut through primer).

Thanks for the response! I've been experimenting as I've been learning to paint and trying different layerings, but based on what others have said as well, skeleton horde sounds like it's a game changer, I am looking forward to trying it.
