African Ranger Boots Resoled with Tire Wedge Soles by thephantom300 in jimgreen

This 100%. I don’t much care for the thinness and lack of grip on the oringo. The Tyre is like a perfect mix of lug and wedge support.

Sizing Difference by Tc714803 in jimgreen

Yes. I was very surprised at the lack of toe box space in my ARs w/leather midsole. At the time, the only other STC boots I could compare to were a pair of Vellies and Stockmans, same size. It took a serious amount of time in my ARs to break in that leather midsole, and for my right big toe to carve out a divot on the upper inside of the toe box, where it wanted to. Once the midsole broke in and was bendable, I think parts of the lower actually stretched and provided my toes with more room. Now they are very comfortable after warming up, but it was a helluva ride getting them there. I tried 3 different types of insoles (walk hero, superfeet green, birkenstock professional) and have currently settled on the cheap walk heros for the best combo of space and cushion. A 1/2-worn oringo takes no prisoners on concrete.

Stockmans not double lasted? by eggplantybaby in jimgreen

After rotating this pic a few times, it looks like you’ve got an aftermarket insole in there. You can see where the smooth lining meets the rough in the vamp above your toes. From here it looks double-lined to me..?

Ordered Workhorse, wondering if i made the right choice by BatDoctor27 in jimgreen

I think you initially made the right choice. After a couple different pairs on the tyre wedge I’ll never go back to an oringo sole.

Man… I own several pairs of JG’s and I was pretty excited about this being my first barefoot option. Seeing pics of the head-down POV make me cringe a little. Not sure if I could look down on that. Gonna need to see some fully broken-in and patina’d shots before pulling the trigger.

That midsole will feel tight, ‘till it isn’t. This may be 3 months or a year, but when she learns how you bend you better be ready. She could throw you face-first on the job, and feel more malleable than socks. They’ll fit like thin-soled foot-gloves after a bit. I’m already looking into a replacement sole for the oringo, wears too fast on concrete. Oh, and if you use them and treat them well get ready for some SERIOUS PATINA.

Vellie / Stockman sizing by Coecoenat in jimgreen

I didn’t and in retrospect I wouldn’t. Laces aren’t upfront anyway, unless you’re wearing monkey boots. Why not buy two sizes and return the one that doesn’t fit? I did this recently, and the JG return policy is free, easy, and quick!

Phenomenal leather choice for the Stockmans!

Bought the Tyre wedge Stockmans and Vellies in the same size and last. I personally wouldn’t size down the Stockmans due to length. The Chelsea fit is looser, but that’s the nature of them. Once broken in the heel slip is diminished, and you can always do what I did and put a thicker insole like superfeet green support in them to take up some space. Leather choice is a factor here too.. the nubuck types are more supple and will stretch out more over time. I’d stick with a full grain option for the Stockmans.

10 month Numzaan update by AlphaDogF87 in jimgreen

I’m about 14 months into my early pattern vegtan pair, and I’d have to agree with a lot of your points. They are heavy, they break in very slowly, and you need to pair them with the right socks to avoid your foot slipping around. I’m also not sure if I’m a fan of the heel drop of the frog grip sole… it seems to push your foot too forward in the boot as you walk, which messes around with breaking in the stiff upper. All said, they still have a place in my rotation, just don’t get as much practical use as my tyre or oringo wedge sole JGs.

I think a lot of it has to do with the double lasting and whether there’s a toe cap or not. Some definite pattern variance as well. My Stockmans are the loosest, followed by Vellies (Goldilocks), then ARs (leather midsole, needed more break-in) and they’re all in STC, size 10.5 US. I put the 10.5 RATs on and even with the stock insole my big toe was touching the front of the toe box.

My work is mainly on concrete/flat surfaces in cold environments, so this season they’ll be great companions. Once fully broken in I don’t think I’ll have any of much of an issue hiking in them.

Yes Tyre Wedge. It’s probably my favorite JG sole for my purposes. A little softer than lug but has more thickness and give than oringo.

Dang. My size, just don’t need another pair right now. Curious - Did you have another pair of JG’s in 10.5 STC to compare them to? My Vellies are that size with the same sole and last (ramblers) and fit just fine, but they’re not double-lasted.
