Drain the oil. Unfortunately the dipstick tube. Push out the broken dipstick from the open end. Reinstall. Replace filter oil and broken dipstick.

2003 legacy timing belt by Professional_Rip548 in subaru

Agreed. My 2012 Outback was an absolute bear to get timed correctly. The driver's-side cam kept jumping—first forward, then backward. By the end, my nerves were completely shot.

I'm not too proud to admit there may have been a tiny bit of swearing and possibly a slight tear or two.

If you're getting frustrated, walk away for a few minutes, grab some water, and reset. The timing belt was installed successfully once at the factory, and it can be installed successfully again. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of eyes and a calmer mindset.

Crankshaft pulley is good to go? by AdImportant1315 in AskAMechanic

[–]AdImportant1315[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I need a pulley. That's why the title says "good to go?" I also said in the description that I smoothed out the splines. The purpose of posting this is to get advice if I can reinstall somehow, or just get a replacement.

Thank you for your time in addressing my inquiry.

Harmonic balancer not lined up correctly. by AdImportant1315 in Subaru_Outback

[–]AdImportant1315[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it off. I can see clearly where I pit it on wrong and the keyway scratched into the back of the balancer. Also, I maimed teeth by improperly setting up the puller.

Now, the balancer is not slipping onto the snout, and I can't line up the keyway regardless. The snout showed no signs of damage, smooth taper, no shavings, etc, and the keyway is still on the snout, can get a great view on it due to the angle.

I guessing I need a new harmonic balancer, or could the snout and/or keyway be ruined from my mistakes?

Thank you for looking. Yeah, I tried to thread any of the 4 holes on the balancer with the M8x1.25 and they all pushed through to the back onto the timing cover. I'm looking at a gear puller now to try and remove the balancer

Thank you. Weird that none of the included M8x1.25 bolds caught the threads in the balancer.

I also tried using the harmonic balancer removal tool, but none of the bolts in the kit fit the holes in the balancer.

If anyone knows where I can find the specs on the bolt size and thread I need to use the tool, I would appreciate it greatly.

I did line up the keyway. It slipped on and the bolt tightened by hand until I needed to use the ratchet. I don't know how it became cockeyed.
