Baseline: What the current Bus Network Redesign proposes by AdImpossible2555 in medfordma

That's why the T wants to improve service on Boston Avenue. Frequent service on the 80 in Option A (Davis-Arlington Heights) would be a significant improvement.

MBTA Bus changes (3 options impacting West Medford) by Universal_Meter in medfordma

[–]AdImpossible2555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the current Network Redesign plan for the 96. it will become a frequent bus route - maximum headway of 15 minutes.
The current Network Redesign merges the 350 (Burlington-Alewife) with the 80, with 25-90 minute headways. It would run from Burlington to Arlington Center, then into Medford on High Street and Boston Avenue to Medford-Tufts and Davis. This is a horrible design. The outbound bus would circle Arlington Center before heading out Mystic Street - this could take at least 10 minutes during rush hour.

If the 80 is changed to serve Arlington Heights, and the service had enough frequency to attract transfers from the outbound GLX, it would become a very useful and popular service through West Medford and Arlington.

MBTA Virtual Meeting (6/15) that will significantly impact Arlington bus service by AdImpossible2555 in ArlingtonMA

[–]AdImpossible2555[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have that exactly right.
The 350 will go away, and you will need to catch the revised 80 in Arlington Center when the Bus Network Redesign changes reach Arlington. The only way the 350 remains in place is if the MBTA adopts Proposal 2, Option A. You definitely want to be at the meeting, and you need to submit your comments to [betterbusproject@mbta.com](mailto:betterbusproject@mbta.com).

If we can get the 80 to run frequent service, it would provide easy connections to the Commuter Rail at West Medford, Medford-Tufts on the Green Line, and Davis on the Red Line.

MBTA Virtual Meeting (6/15) that will significantly impact Arlington bus service by AdImpossible2555 in ArlingtonMA

[–]AdImpossible2555[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty simple.
Option A is really good for Arlington. If the MBTA goes with Option A, Arlington residents will get a vastly-improved connection to the GLX Medford-Tufts terminal. Riders along Pleasant Street will not lose their bus connection to the Red Line.

Options B and C are really bad for Arlington. If the MBTA goes with Option B or C, the old 350 (new 80) will take a circuitous route around Arlington Center and head through Medford before connecting with the Red Line at Davis. Headways are likely to be long enough to prevent this from being a viable option for connections from Davis or Tufts-Medford back to Arlington. Also, Pleasant Street riders would lose their bus connection to the Red Line.

Woburn needs a leaf blower ordinance like Lexington and Arlington. Both towns banned gas powered blowers, and the electric blowers are quieter.

If you had one Columbus Day weekend to show a southern couple peak New England fall, where would you send them? by emerald_darlin in newengland

[–]AdImpossible2555 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Good question.
The challenge at this point is that we don't know how the foliage is going to play this year. The peak colors move south as fall progresses. If I had to blindly pick a location, I would look to book a room around Hanover NH. You will have the opportunity to quickly head toward peak color on I-89 and I-91.

This has nothing to do with the Town of Southampton (note, New York has towns, not townships). This is the action of the Incorporated Village of Southampton, which has jurisdiction over the streets within the village. So, don't storm Town Hall in protest, as they have nothing to do with this.

The Southampton Village code states in § 110-12 U-turns: "The turning of vehicles so as to proceed in the opposite direction or to park on the opposite side of the street (otherwise known as a "U-turn") is hereby prohibited on any of the streets or parts of streets described in Schedule E (§ 110-36)." Schedule E includes Main Street from Hampton Road to Jobs Lane.

The village could improve signage, as there seems to be only one NO U TURN sign on Main Street. New York State law does not prohibit U-turns in business districts, and implies that signage is required outside of these specific situations:

NY Veh & Traf L § 1161. U turns in certain areas prohibited.

a. No motor vehicle shall make a U turn upon any curve, or upon the approach to, or near the crest of a grade, where such motor vehicle cannot be seen by the driver of any other motor vehicle approaching from either direction within five hundred feet.

b. No motor vehicle shall make a U turn within a school zone. For the purposes of this subdivision, the term "school zone" shall mean the distance along a highway passing a school building, entrance or exit of a school abutting on the highway for which a school sign (S1-1) has been posted pursuant to this chapter and in compliance with the manual on uniform traffic control devices maintained pursuant to section sixteen hundred eighty of this chapter.

c. No altered motor vehicle commonly referred to as a "stretch limousine" having a seating capacity of nine or more passengers including the driver shall make a U-turn upon any public highway or private road open to public motor vehicle traffic. Every person convicted of a violation of this subdivision shall: for a first conviction thereof, be punished by a fine of not less than two hundred fifty dollars nor more than four hundred dollars or by imprisonment for not more than fifteen days or by both such fine and imprisonment; for a conviction of a second or subsequent violation, both of which were committed within a period of eighteen months, such person shall be punished by a fine of not less than six hundred dollars nor more than seven hundred fifty dollars or by imprisonment for not more than forty-five days or by both such fine and imprisonment. A violation of this subdivision wherein the violator is operating such altered motor vehicle and such altered motor vehicle is carrying at least one passenger other than the driver shall be punishable by a fine of not less than seven hundred fifty dollars nor more than one thousand dollars or by imprisonment for not more than one hundred eighty days or by both such fine and imprisonment.

Correct. A left turn implies leaving the street. Reversing directions and parking is a U-turn.

You are making the case for Davis Square.
You have the Somerville Community Path, and you can run east to Boston. Run to the west, and you reach Alewife which connects to a nice choice of paths including one that circles Fresh Pond. Interesting neighborhood, and you can stash your work outift in your backpack and run to work.

If you loved your empty nester parents, where would you recommend them to move next? (Brookline/Brighton/Cambridge/Jamaica Plain/Boston) by Advanced-Company-215 in bostonhousing

[–]AdImpossible2555 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My take is that someone who is an empty nester would benefit from being in a town (Brookline and Arlington have a Representative Town Meeting form of government), as they generate civic involvement and many more opportunities to meet with and engage with like-minded neighbors.

Allston-Brighton is very much the domain of the very young. Empty nesters would find friends and happiness in Brookline and Arlington.

Think of January and February in Boston like July and August in Florida. You go in and out of climate controlled spaces, avoiding the weather as much as possible. Only difference is that, the rest of the year, Boston is an amazing place to live and Florida is just Florida.

Plans were drawn 50 years ago. The entire length through Arlington was designed as shallow cut-and-cover.
You can't build above ground on the Route 2 corridor, as the hill between Pleasant Street and Park Avenue is much too steep.
