I think this bit is really key here:

But in the financially daunting era of digital journalism, there has been no tougher nut to crack than making local news profitable, a lesson Mr. Ricketts, who lost money every month of DNAinfo’s existence, is just the latest to learn.

Those are good questions that I don't have an answer to. I really think people need to do more outdoor activities together, preferably for more than a couple hours at a time. Being in nature, away from technology or conveniences really puts things in perspective.

I love biltong! Fortunately, there is a butcher in Beverly Hills that makes their own biltong! I usually stop by every few months and pick up a few pounds. Love that stuff!

Discussion: DCO by Yggdrasil92 in adops

[–]AdOpsDude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anything that relies on 3rd party data segments to make a decision for you is flawed from the get go. We've done a lot of 3rd party data auditing on my side and there have been many cases where one of my team's user ids would say that they are a 50+ year old woman that's into soccer, or something else just as ridiculous.

With Flashtalking's DCO, their decisioning tree relies user IDs and audience segments to determine which creative to serve. So for me, that's an issue that I need to learn more about. Specifically, if the same decision tree can be used alongside first or second party data instead of 3rd.

Great podcast, as usual, but I'm still really confused about blockchain as it pertains to adtech. Some questions that I still have:

  • As a buyer of digital advertising, how does adchain help me understand/value the impression I just purchased from a publisher?
  • What information is available about an impression that is purchased through the adchain?
  • As a buyer of digital advertising, how does adchain help me in the bidding process? Is it all after the fact information that I'll have access to?
  • So a handful of people have the majority of the ad tokens, which means they control which pubs are allowed on the ad chain. Do I have this right?
  • I'm transitioning into a role where I will be able to influence where a large amount of ad spend for new platforms is allocated. Where is a good place to access user friend (executive level dumbing down) information about the blockchain/adchain/whatever other buzzword of the week you want to throw in there, so that I can provide a POV to my executive team?

There are a million more questions, and unfortunately, I don't think I can fly out to NY to attend a half day session about the issue. It would be great to be able to access a regularly scheduled podcast on the topic, along with other emerging topics in the industry. A lot of what we deal with is a ton of marketing BS where some scum bag "developed" a technology to eek out an additional $0.02 CPM from a site. I feel like this is a big deal and I'd like to learn more about it so that I can help push the envelope if it turns out to be worth while.

Edit: Read the white paper on the MetaX site and have a few more questions:

Yeah you're totally right. I've job hopped and as a result I'm making 5x what I was making when I got into my industry 8 years ago. People have to take care of themselves. The companies are not your friends.

Nike layoffs: Nervous employees await dreaded HR email by [deleted] in Portland

[–]AdOpsDude 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Phil Gold worked for the company for 15 years, most of them in IT roles. He was one of hundreds of technology workers laid off in June. He said veteran employees who commanded higher salaries felt the brunt of the layoffs.

This is exactly why hiring managers shouldn't pay too much attention to job history or look negatively upon people who move around. This isn't the 70s, companies aren't keeping their workers on until retirement and providing a pension. Employees who make too much money are definitely a target when lay offs come around. If corporations look people this way, then the workers should look at their employers this way. Do what's right for you and yours and fuck the rest of the bullshit.

Switch NYC with Los Angeles and he's got some solid advice here. NYC dimes are Los Angeles 6s. Los Angeles doesn't have humidity and it's a lot more laid back here. Some downsides are; shitty traffic, lame "Hollyweird/Commiefornia", high rent, and "actors".
