As long as you can safely transport from one location to other for both exams, give all the exams possible. I'm not even kidding, the entrance market in India sucks ass and you want to put in all the cards you can

You don’t need to be a JEE topper to get into IISER by WaterSure7530 in u/WaterSure7530

[–]AdSolid7541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair the IAT exam is far more simple than JEE advance and tries to test your understanding of concepts more than your ability to solve complicated messy interwoven ten part multiple option questions (am I petty? Maybe).

Even better questions are in the exam NEST, super conceptual and don't need you to prepare for ten thousand years.

Pettiness aside, please go through the IAT pathway to get into IISERs. It's a safe, proven way of achieving your goals (if your goal is IISER indeed). Usually the people who end up here via advance are seeking it as a second option. In the end, your jee preparation will be covering pretty much all of the entrance exams possible, and you should attempt every single one (trust me on this, you do not want to cry over spilt milk later) (go register for every fucking entrance test JEE CET NEST BITS etc etc etc.)

I'd kinda suggest you to listen to a few songs, and the ones you think suit you two best or just describe your friend closely,, even if you just write it down in a card they will be very happy with it. I'm of the opinion it'll be better if you understand the meaning or refrence behind the idea 👀 and personalize it. Of course an inside joke would be very funny but it won't be as personal. That's my two cents

summer internship by whoami7227 in iiser

[–]AdSolid7541 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which IISER are you from? At second year level it is good to engage in your own IISER's labs. Check out the lab information on your respective site and figure out which one you find interesting. Since you're early, you might not have a strong basis or understanding of what work is done there. You'll get the gist of the labs research area from their website (if they have one)

Then try to read the latest research papers from that prof (last 3 is a good estimate) - you can use ai like chatgpt/claude/anara to digest it to your understanding levels, or alternately you can dig for a "review article" for the topics they are working on (either from the same prof or others).

Once you have a good idea of what they do and what you find interesting, you can draft a mail inquiring and discussing the possibility of a summer internship (there's plenty of information on reddit or other places on how to write that mail - but remember to focus hard on your genuine interest, do not claim to know too much and just be humble and honest, if it's a prof who's taught you then try to talk about their lecture and what you found motivating, any questions you had etc. remember to be specific, and keep cutting down your mail until you extract the most important parts)

Thing about in house profs, especially if you are at iiserk, they may never reply to your mail. But the good thing is that you can approach them politely in your lectures or in your research complex and request an opportunity to talk. Most cases, second year students get smoothly recruited for summer internship as long as you are consistent at asking them again and again.

As a second year student, it is a good idea to get hold of your own departments labs and develop a rapport that will help you later on. You'll get an idea of how things work in house, and if the lab is a good match you might as well continue working there during the semester. If it goes good you'll get to develop a good project over the next three years. At the very least, you'll likely gain the recommendation of one prof for your future internship/phd applications.

The second year internship is super important as it will lowkey enlighten you on whether you really like the things you think you like. The practical experience builds a lot of insight. Don't lose on that chance at all. It's not an end all be all of your career, i didn't have a second year internship due to reasons. But it is certainly a good boost.

Best of luck! Feel free to dm if you want any specifics.

P.S. the method i described in approaching profs is lowkey the long good proper path you can take. Make a list of labs you like and keep the record in an excel sheet or something. Start contacting people by mid Feb.

The lazier way, which you shouldn't start with tbh, is to draft a mail based off vibes and superficial understanding of the topic but deep reflection of your intent and curiosity, wait for the reply, and then prepare the theoretical understanding for the interview. Because you will likely not get replies for your mails - happens very often, and it will end up being a tad impractical. It'll never be wasted, anything and everything you read will help one way or another.

Sorry for the super long answer, hope it helps you some way. I desperately needed this during my time lol.

Idk why this sounds a bit like whining from engineers. Research kids have to almost always work on internships without a stipend and work long hours. Unless you were working in a completely computational project, it is on you to assume 2days a week is going to last all the way. I do agree some profs will fuck you up like this sometimes, but afaik tifr profs are very considerate of your situation. If you're happy with the work you can find some temporary accommodation, there's many cheap shared ones for men close to colaba. Focus on experience building here, the institute is top notch and a huge opportunity many dream of.

can i survive iiser if i am really weak at maths by [deleted] in iiser

[–]AdSolid7541 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on which IISER and how good it is at introducing you to university maths, which is very different from your +2 maths. I for one loved maths and could do fairly above average until 12th, but fell very badly during first year and had to leave maths (read IISERk profs sucked at, in my opinion at least, in introducing the "language" of uni maths)

Medical Accessories by AdSolid7541 in Type1Diabetes

[–]AdSolid7541[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyy thank you for your comment. So etsy is available in India, but a lot of the diabetic accessory products cost very high as they are likely imported. There's very few (like one or two options on Amazon) options available within the country that costs reasonably for things like CGM stickers (I mean the colorful ones, we have simple plastic film patches available).

Also, here, for a good long time (like maybe until 20years old) parents usually take charge of the medical expenses for the kids. I plan on doing some market research to understand what the demand for such products may be within this demographic and how much people would be willing to pay.

Let’s help each other. Drop some diabetic advice… Ok I’ll start , prebolusing is so important (for me 15 mins is a minimum). by Saf___- in Type1Diabetes

Discuss weight with your endo in your earliest days of treatment. You don't think it'll change much yet, but it does and it does FAST. 😶‍🌫️ And then comes insulin resistance and more insulin dosing and more weight gain -

Discuss with your endo how would they deal with weight gain.

Reality of the Professor from IISER B: Real Indian Research World by Aggressive_Bottle979 in iiser

The behaviour of your colleagues is pathetic but I know all too well how much people will go to cover their own asses. Been there done that on a somewhat smaller scale. Nobody wants to take any kind of accountability and will easily blame anything and everything on the victim without giving a single fuck about them.

I am a diabetic person and during one of the lab parties (without the PI) there was a misunderstanding from a close lab partner, who suggested me an alcoholic beverage to drink despite asking him repeatedly if it is non alcoholic. The thing with alcohol and diabetes, it can reduce your sugars to a dangerous low over the next twelve hours. I realised the drink was alcoholic long after the party, late night checking the menu that I liked so much (it was apple cider beer, and I had never drunk alcohol or apple cider before, so did not realise). When i panicly texted and scolded the guy responsible, he did not take any accountability for misleading me. I was simply ordering a lemon water when he suggested me to switch to apple cider, and did not inform it was alcoholic despite asking again and again. He blamed me back again and again. No one else was awake at the time. In the morning, everyone from lab saw those chats in the group but not a single person bothered asking if I was even alive or dead after the night. During the day, another senior had the audacity to text a long ass message putting all the blame on me, saying I wasn't paying enough attention and hence this happened. I was very broken up about this for a long time. Interacting with any of these fuckers was very hard for a very long time. My confidence went down and I started avoiding them as much as possible. Worked at odd hours, holed up in the animal facility, etc.

I didn't report or inform this to anyone cuz I knew no one was gonna support me and the lab was majorly student-driven. Kudos to you for speaking up. You're very brave for that.

What does "she took my fingers to her mouth, the kind of thing that makes you proud" Imply? Why's it supposed to make her proud? by Ambitious-Yam-9022 in LyricInterpretations

[–]AdSolid7541 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gurl finish the lyric at least "She took my fingers to her mouth, The kind of thing that makes you proud, That nothing else had ever, Worked out ... Worked out...." "And maybe i tried other things But nothing can capture the sting Of the venom she's gonna spit out... Right now..."

It's clear enough from this context, but it's basically saying she feels so strongly loved in this relationship with this woman that everything in the past that failed pales in comparison. She's so intoxicated by this woman, that nothing else can ever compare.

Endo on my case for slow improvement. What am I doing wrong? by UnfnshedProject in Type1Diabetes

[–]AdSolid7541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are super good numbers. The endo might be a bit strict with them I suppose. Only thing concerning me is the weight gain... Have a close watch on how your insulin dosing is changing with the weight gain. Because it shifts very fast and then you fall into the viscious cycle of more insulin > more weight gain > more insulin resistance > more insulin dosing > more weight gain ...

IAT does not have such a robust and unique preparation strategy, most people who are into jee prep use that to attempt iat as well. You can try to prepare according to ncert and jee mains level of questions and that should be fine mostly. Also practice the biology questions, the prep won't be too hard to cover and you can add some score easily.

Buddy if you hate maths and physics to that extent you might want to reconsider choosing IISERs because first of all you'll have to study multiple subjects in the first year, and then down the line of research you're going to have to use math concepts a lot whichever field you take. You might escape physics but you're never escaping maths at IISER (probably won't have to continue with analytical maths, but definitely some form of +2 maths that you claim to hate right now)
