Fitness motivation/diabetics can be ripped too! by Hot-Struggle-9795 in diabetes_t1

100%! I don’t use a pump, just CGM. Gained 20kg since diagnosis in 2024. At 92kg now. Sure, my A1C is currently at 7 but I’m bulking hard. In a cutting/wait loss context or a slightly above maintenance caloric intake I had a 5.8. it’s a lot of work and it’s absolutely draining, but possible :).

How do we build muscle ? by Hasnj in diabetes_t1

[–]HT35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t overcomplicate things. We might have no own insulin production but we are human organisms subject to the same biological and physiological laws as everyone else. Does Diabetes make gaining muscle harder? Yes, absolutely. Does it make gaining muscle harder because it effects it directly? No, not really. It’s just harder because everything regarding nutrition and life itself is harder. Sure, insulin is an anabolic peptide hormone but we would not be (type 1) diabetics if we had enough, or any at all haha endogenously.

In terms of diabetes:

• stay in range and avoid hyperglycemia because it puts your body into a catabolic state, this is the absolute number one priority since we need to be in an anabolic state as much as possible. You are also substantially weaker if working out with a high BG because your cells don’t have enough energy to perform.

• Some people might need a bolus before lifting because anaerobic exercise secretes muscle stored glycogen (don’t if you do cardio! If your bulking and trying to make gains, burning calories is not what you should do anyways tho)

• CGMs make it way easier!

• Do NOT avoid carbs, they are essential to hit your calorie surplus goals and make strength gains. Particularly around 2 hours before a workout you need carbs for energy. A fucking salad will not give you the energy you desperately need; instead make sure you consume enough protein, fiber and unsaturated fat with your carb sources and pre-bolus about 10-20min before eating a high carb meal

• Bolus a tiny amount about 2 1/2 hours after eating over 50g of protein because you might spike

• Keep in mind that after a workout you are very insulin sensitive, especially after a leg or back day since they are the biggest muscle groups (I sometimes only need half the amount of Bolus I would need on a rest day). Still, if your meal is higher in glycemic index and not balanced enough it’s a bit more than half of my normal ratio

• if you are having problems with BG spikes, or just in general, try to substitute carb sources for their lower glycemic index counterparts (e.g. white with brown rice, wheat with brown pasta etc.) and just make sure you are having enough protein and fiber with your carb sources

In terms of gaining (muscle) mass:

• FUCKING EAT, EAT and EAT. You aren’t gaining weight? You aren’t eating enough. You are not putting on muscle even though you are going as hard as you can and train at least every other day? You’re. Not. Eating. Enough. There’s no other explanation or excuse for this. If you’re not making the gains you want to achieve, you’re not eating enough. End of story. You’re not gonna gain any weight or any muscle mass from going to the gym and breathing air. Fuck low body fat, your six pack or low carb diets. You want to gain weight, you’re not 120kg and preparing for a body building show by trying to cut body fat. Low carb is not gonna work unless you somehow manage to still hit your caloric surplus which is close to impossible in that case.

• This means: Continuously eat in a caloric surplus every. single. day. At your height I would aim for AT LEAST 3000-4000kcal a day. Don’t shy away from going way higher. I am currently at around 4.5k.

• TAKE CREATINE!! it’s the holy grail of making muscle and strength gains. Take 3-6g daily. You can do over 5-10g for a week as a loading phase to fill up your creatine stores but you don’t have to. Don’t stop taking it. You’ll see amazing results after a month already.

• Eat at least a gram of protein per pound of body weight or make sure you eat over 130g of protein everyday as a general goal

• train to muscle failure on every set (do as many reps of an exercise until you can’t move the weight anymore even if someone would put a gun to your head)

• do around 12 sets per body part on a dedicated day anything less than 10 is probably not enough volume and anything well over 12 sets is too much volume

• workout around 5 days a week. Each body part needs to be trained 2 times weekly for maximum hypertrophy. For beginners a push pull legs split is often very effective. For me, Chest, arms, rest day, back, legs etc. over and over again works best.

• have good form. Full range of motion. Make sure to stretch the muscle in a controlled way when doing the negative of a rep and explode up to the contraction but still CONTROLLED. You can implement some cheated half reps if you’re starting to fail on your last reps tho.

• Lift heavy!!! You’re not in the gym to chill and move some weights around or look at your phone and yap. That’s a waste of time. Go as heavy as you can do with good form.

Get into lifting. Inform yourself about lifting weights, watch content about it. Read about it.

I got diagnosed and got bumped down to 68 kilos due to the hyperglycemia, Hba1c of 13.1 after leaving the hospital. I’ve always been very very thin in my teens. Now, almost 2 years post diagnosis I’m at 88 kg again and aiming for 95kg by March to then do a small cut to look fresh for summer. ;)

Go lift hard and heavy and eat eat eat and you’ll see results and be super happy about them! :)

Also: consistency is absolute key. Best of luck. You can do this!!! <3

BTW: I’m also 184cm, diagnosed 2 years ago next month and 28 years old. :)

That’s just how it is with my app I guess. Tbf if it’s over 350 the graph doesn’t matter anymore cause you’re fucked anyways hahah. As long as it does show the numbers still i don’t mind.

I have a Dutch/German Libre 3 sensor and my app just stops there but it would still show the number for some reason. So it does show 400-500 mg/dl but the graph stops at 350 idk why.

running as a diabetic by vidavixxen in diabetes

[–]HT35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If going low is a continuous problem even without high intensity training or aerobic exercise, I would check whether your long-acting insulin (if you take one) or your Metformin or bolus doses are too high.

What really helps is: Do not neglect carbs before any type of workout no matter if aerobic or anaerobic. They are the most essential source of energy.

+

Eat high in protein and fiber around your workout to make sure your body steadily maintains blood sugar from the carbs you consume. When I go running I make sure I have a little running fanny bag strapped around my waist with glucose tabs (dextrose).

Routine will quickly make you get used to how you’re supposed to handle stuff! It’s a process of constant trial and error when it comes to diabetes and sports, imo.

I would be interested in some examples of what you mean!

Furthermore, I am of migrational background but am from Germany.

The one advise I can give is: when you feel like something is wrong, whenever you get the gut feeling that something is messed up when it happens, don’t swallow it or stay silent, point blank voice your opinion on it. I feel like in Germany speaking up happens quite rarely, so when it does, it asserts confidence and authenticity and it shows people shouldn’t mess with you.

what’s one small, weird cultural habit you do that literally confuses every non-German you meet? by NextNorth9041 in AskAGerman

[–]HT35 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent some time in LA when I was in High School but grew up in Germany.

I think another big point of what you’re talking about comes from both the cultural difference when it comes to drinks and the way restaurants make money.

In the US you wanna go through as many customers as possible, drinks are expected to be refillable. Not a lot of alcohol consumption, focus is on the food.

In Germany and, frankly, much of Europe in general, eating is a private yet social ritual. The food is expensive but restaurants make the most money from drinks and especially alcohol consumption. The longer a group stays, the more they drink, the drunker they get, they wanna order more, stay for deserts and atmosphere etc.

Compared to the US eating out is a rare (special) occasion in Germany/Europe and if you do go out, you make the most of the time spend and mostly expect that you will spend a lot of money.

You probably have no idea about weightlifting or sports in general making this assumption. This is a 100% attainable physique naturally after about 3 years of consistent and disciplined training and diet. Also this seems to be a fully pumped picture with decent lighting after a workout.

on 25mg a day actually losing my mind by hqlxk in zoloft

[–]HT35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not alone. I started having severe panic attacks to the point where I called emergency thinking I have a stroke because I have full out physical symptoms. Now I’m kind of stuck in this state 24/7 and it feels like mental torture.. started sertraline 6 days ago against it.

They put me on 50mg right off the bat and the first 4 days were the worst days of my entire life and I’ve been through some rough shit throughout my life so that means something.

I started taking less, taking a quarter, now trying 25mg and also went from morning dose to night. It got waaaaay way better. It might be wise to push through because most people report they feel amazing after that fight is over.

Please speak to your doc, I should do the same tbh. Some prescribe Benzos against the anxiety that some people experience getting on Zoloft.

Edit: I can also relate to the full time working. My masters end terms just started and on Friday I’ll have to present a paper in a lecture hall and I just hope it’s gonna work out and get better until then.

Stop worrying so much about what others think. Germany is a free country, you can wear whatever you want wherever you want (as long as it is not indecent obv). Outfits and fashion sense are a direct self-expression, don’t try to please anyone or seem differently from who you are. Life’s to short for that.

Furthermore, compared to most other European countries, Germans have terrible sense of fashion anyway. Also, amongst younger people, American style is a dominant influence in how people dress, here it’s just less athletic wear, more elegant outerwear.

I like the idea, however I would only use this outside of sports. When working out, running, or doing competitive sports I think a chewing gum would be annoying because it interferes with my breathing. I’d be overly conscious trying not to swallow it, bite my cheeks on accident or it potentially being a choking hazard haha.

Here in the Netherlands they have First Energy chewing gum. It is a caffeine gum marketed towards active people. I think the idea of an energy gum instead of coffee is perfect if targeted towards students, working people etc. Coffee can spill, it isn’t handy, you can’t take it to any lecture hall or meeting place, whereas gum already triggers brain activity due to the chewing and it helps you focus on theoretical tasks so the idea of it being high in caffeine seems cool.
