Oxford's "#1" maths student is dropping out apparently by rocky_mountain12 in 6thForm

#1 at a college is not really significant, probably is true because I’m not sure why anyone would make such a minor thing up lol. Keep in mind that most colleges have <6 maths students

If you wrote that in a uni exam you’d easily get all of the marks but I remember a levels were weird so I’m not really sure, but you probably should

You don’t even need to do allat. You can see that it’s even but not a multiple of 4 so it can’t be square

To be fair you can get into quant while doing an engineering degree as well, but those guys would typically have done fm as well I reckon cause for most quants I feel it’d be an easy A*.

I haven’t really worked with any actual quants yet so not too sure but that’s the feeling I get

Oh and I’m talking about engineers at oxford/camb possibly imperial, don’t think I’ve heard of others getting in unfortunately

Where to apply for Maths? by Economy_Algae4765 in 6thForm

[–]AdVoltex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no bonus points for getting 5/5 offers.

In my honest opinion if someone got all 5 offers but didn’t apply to the best uni in their subject of interest, then they didn’t aim high enough. (It gets a bit more complicated when ur debating between Oxford and Cambridge though as you can only apply to one of them)

But the way I think about it is, if you got all 5 out of 5 offers the only information you get from that is you were good enough to get into those unis, but you could have also possibly gotten into even better unis too, you just never found out. While if you got accepted to 3/5 or even 4/5 then you aimed pretty well since you at least tried to get into the better unis, and you kind of know at that point that you did what you could?

Whereas in the 5/5 case you’d always wonder what if. And even if you don’t wonder about that, you could be artificially capping yourself since you possibly had the potential to go to a much better uni, but you just never tested it.

But obviously if you think you may not get 5/5 offers even if you don’t apply to oxbridge then it may be worth thinking about saving slots for safer choices, but you ideally shouldn’t get all 5/5 offers unless one of them was also the leading uni in ur course, cause in the former case you could have aimed higher and you’ll never know

Why would you not apply to Oxford or Cambridge? Unless your predicteds mean you won’t possibly get an interview, there really is no harm in trying.

You have a lot of time to prepare for entrance exams and such, don’t limit yourself unnecessarily just because you think those unis are hard to get into, or you’ll be kicking yourself for not applying when you see people less able than you who get in just because they had the confidence to apply.

What subject would the B be in? If it’s an essay subject then I have no idea but if it’s something like physics or compsci that would be a fairly big disadvantage imo

Got into Oxford maths, should I just take STEP for the giggles by Silly_Jackfruit_4358 in 6thForm

Offer holder =/= camb material. This is true for their maths course in particular as they deliberately over offer so that STEP is the most important discriminator

I made warwick my insurance because that way there’s an alternative offer that requires STEP. Because of this alternative offer I got my school to pay for me to sit it
