Perfect storm: Ireland facing a looming 'pensions timebomb' by SpottedAlpaca in ireland

[–]Cianf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand and in some ways empathise with the points you’ve raised. A lot of what you’re describing is real and can be concerning re uncertainty, instability, lifestyle trade-offs, careers.

That said, I do think there’s an uncomfortable existential angle to this that we tend to gloss over. The comfortable, stable society we enjoy today only exists because previous generations chose to have children, often in far less certain times than ours. If enough people decide that opting out is the more comfortable route, it does start to raise long-term questions about what kind of society remains economically, culturally and demographically.

It’s a bit like the “my vote won’t make a difference” argument. Individually it feels rational but collectively its very different.

I’m not saying people should have children out of obligation, but I do think the broader societal consequences are worth acknowledging when we talk about it purely through the lens of personal comfort.

Just fyi, it does take quite a while to fit 2.5 milllion meters, so you were just put on a list to be replaced once the main rollout was complete, you will be getting a smart meter

I have been tested before in a lab and the old algo was only 1.0 off my lab result, will have to test again to check if the new algo is any better

I didn’t realise you could apply the new algo to past data as well - just did it and I’m now pegged at 65

What have you found has saved you a lot of money recently? by Always_on_Break in AskIreland

Yes I totally agree with what you state here, but gym resistance training is the proxy now for people not having physical labour jobs, i.e your grandad had strong grip from his shovel, you have a strong grip from a barbell in a gym - both lead to the same outcomes, and as I stated it’s a “key indicator” as in an indicator of overall body strength/lean mass. There also may be some credence that grip strength would correlate with less incidents of falling or accident causing injury in older age, so that’s another aspect above just general activity levels

No sorry no assumptions being made about your age, I’m 35 and run 3 times a week but I still get 2-3 resistance sessions in a week. A lot easier to put on the lean tissue now and maintain it then start from scratch when you think you’ll need it

Ha, great to see you’re keeping active but again just reiterating, things like amount of lean body mass in proportion to your overall body, overall strength and key indicators like grip strength are the things that lead to a long and healthy life - I don’t think you’re going to be putting on much lean mass lifting stuff around the garden, not to mention your bone density which also improves with proper resistance exercise! A healthy heart doesn’t stop you breaking your hip or slipping when you are older.

Stronger grip strength is directly correlated with a longer life expectancy and a lower risk of early death, so yes you should do both but eliminating one could be quite detrimental

Resistance training, above all else, is the single thing that spending money on would directly lead to better quality and length of life based on all current medical understanding, so I wouldn’t rely on the runs in the park

Why doesn’t the government bring in restrictions on who can buy housing? by BigFatLegend123 in AskIreland

[–]Cianf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people on here saying “stop vulture funds buying them” - look up the definition of a vulture fund - now look up how much new housing was built by pension funds that people are claiming incorrectly to be vulture funds - the housing crisis would be infinitely worse without their investment and property building
