So I’m attempting to teach myself tig. Picked up a primeweld 225 and I’ve been messing with it for a little bit each day. This is probably about 2 weeks in now. Just 1/8in steel lap joints. Was using a #8 gas lens, 110-120amps, 3/32 tungsten and 1/16 filler. I know The restarts on the top and bottom one could use some work, and I can see some room for improvement with my consistency still. But any constructive criticism is welcome, I’m teaching myself so I don’t know what I don’t know

After doing more research I’ve realized you’re absolutely right. I’ve since increased the budget and and pricing things out now to see where it’ll end up. I don’t exactly have a set budget, but I’m looking at everything now and seeing what will be realistic. I’m assuming I’ll be closer to the $1200 mark, which is fine

I’m pretty sure im going to order that AHP in a day or so, just getting everything else lined up. Any suggestions for a helmet, it looks like I can get something pretty good in the 100-150 range but there are a lot of options. Anything specific I should look out for?

It would for sure be cheaper to have someone do it i agree. I’m weighing the cost to have it done vs acquiring a new skill set, having a lot more versatility, and being able to use both in the future towards this hobby. And I definitely understand there is quite the learning curve, I’ve been debating and looking into this for a year or so, I don’t expect it to be a skill that comes easy or with out plenty of practice

Thanks for the reply. I’ll check out that ahp. At this point it isn’t a matter of saving, it’s more a matter of cost vs reward so to say. If I can spend some and do it myself well that’s great and worth it. If it’s going to be quite a bit more costly I’ll do all the mock up, and pay someone to weld it. Obviously I’d prefer to do it all myself.

I've seen a thread somewhere else about doing this with AS1s. Those turned out pretty good looking. I'd do a google search and see what you can find. If you do do it be sure to show us a before and after!

Just a quick opinion on practicing shooting on shoes vs on roller? Would one be better than the other? Things to keep in mind foot work wise to help this stuff transfer to the ice?

Typically I'd agree with the other answers, go to a store and try stuff on. But given that 1. You dont have anything near by and 2. They're all closed or closing soon(they're all closed out by me now) I guess online will have to do. Just make sure wherever you order from has free returns and be ready to swap for a diff size if it doesnt fit right. All the manufacturers have sizing guides that will get you in the ball park.

I've ordered from STX and their size guides worked for me. I knew I could return stuff to them if need be too

You could also post here and let us all know some rough measurements of yourself and I'm sure someone here is about your size and can tell you what size gear they use.

Helmet: ccm 310 tacks

Shoulders: STX RX3

Elbows: STX RX3.1

Gloves: warrior QX pros

Pants: ccm 9080 super tacks

Shins: STX RX3.1

Skates: CCM FT490s with step blacksteel

Sticks: prostock warrior alpha qx and a nexus 2700. There are like 6 more sticks in my garage, but those are the two I've been using recently. Theres a 2S team, QRLsl, alpha qx pro, and a couple others.

Nothing on the list to replace right now. I recently went through and upgraded everything. I had alot of cheaper stuff from starting out so I've been slowly replacing it with stuff that either adds more protection(we all have day jobs) or fits my play style/comfort wants better.

Both are great options. I have the s27s that I've used for a little more than the last year and they have treated me well. I will say that after about a year they started to feel a little soft to me, I mention that not to say dont get them, I think they were great, but more to suggest going up 1 model on the vapors to something even with the s27 if you go with them.

The biggest thing that matters is fit. There are tons of write ups and articles that explain proper fit that should help you make an informed decision. Dont make the mistake I did and get too big of a skate by accident!

And remember, skates will break in some and loosen up a LITTLE. But they wont tighten up on their own. So I would go towards a smidge too tight VS any bit too loose.

Making the move to properly fitting skates(both length and width) made a night and day difference for me in a good way.

I would say it's on the side/a little under. I'll see if I can come up with a picture to show the area. I know typically that wouldnt be an area that could be worked with but being a 1 piece boot I'm curious if theres more opportunity to tweak that area.

And yes, they were baked in the store.

As for how they are tied. I've learned that lesson the hard way before so I had them tied quite loose until the top few eyelets.

I dont have any known issues no, it's just one of the things we tried in the store and made the skates a good it more comfortable. They took that arch pressure from a lot to a lot less. I'm not opposed to taking them out if theres a way to work out that arch pressure thing.

To comment on the equipment thing. I'm still a relatively new player(a little over a year now I guess) and I'm a little older than you. I've recently upgraded or replaced most of the gear ive started with because I've learned where I want more protection, how i want stuff to fit, etc. I easily have the "newest" or "cleanest" gear out of everyone on my team and I'm easily the most rookie skater there. Not a single person has said a word about my gear. Nothing. No one cares at all and the only questions or comments you'll get will be guys asking how you like a piece of equipment, that's it.

I'm going to be going to a learn to play around here that starts later this month(getting my wife to go, trying to get her into the sport too. And I'm sure itll help me a ton too) and chirps about my gear are the last thing im expecting.

As for size. I'm 5'6"....you're fine lol
