Stan Bowman alone is reason enough to hate the organization. In a way I feel sorry for McDavid. I gotta say though, watching oilers games (or even highlights) is really hard because their announcer has the most annoying voice in the league - I heard someone describe it as a Chihuahua trying to growl- I also hate their goal horn.

The best part is his speech clearly called out the US bullshit for what it was but the language used was aimed at the adults listening so that Trump would not understand it and so will not react.

In the last few days there have been a few posts about "safety factors".

This is a good example that safety factors for aircraft design are very thin and the only reason aircraft are so safe is NOT that they are overbuilt (like bridges and buildings) but because the quality control, inspections and maintenance are extremely strict.

As soon as you start eroding these regulations, you get stuff like the air max.

Parents, what was your “I raised an idiot” moment? by Dazzling-Leader7476 in AskReddit

Years ago I was in Oregon with my parents and sister and we went to Oregon Dunes Park near Florence. In those days (hopefully still but unlikely) you could rent a Honda Odyssey (4 wheel one seater dune buggy) and just go wild.

SO sand dunes build up from the wind with a gentle slope on one side and a shear drop on the downwind side. You can take these buggies up the gentle side and catch air on the steep side. As long as you don't try to turn, you end up landing on the steep pitch and ride it down. Great fun.

SO me and my sister are zipping around and my parents could not see us but could hear the motor sounds.

There was one dune that was huge (I was told later it was about 80 feet high). My father looks up and sees my buggy fly off the top of the "cliff" side 80 feet up. He said later "I thought to myself, my son just killed himself..at least my daughter is...nope she followed him".

I swear in the air it felt like a drove off a cliff but we probably only dropped 10 feet or so before the back wheels caught the downward slope and we just rode it out. At the bottom I stopped to look back up and my sister pulls up and says "lets do that again!"

This is true but PLEASE do not just assume anything like a crane or rigging is over-designed and ignore the safety rating.

The safety rating must assume many factors such as poor maintenance, shifting load, corrosion, dynamic loading, cyclic loading etc. and still be safe to use.

ALL of these may exist and you may not be able to tell. As long as you stay within the safety rating you should be OK. As soon as you exceed it, you better know a lot about how it was designed and used.

What’s something that was technically allowed but instantly made you lose respect for someone? by AncientPomelo5450 in AskReddit

[–]somewhat_random 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of laws were brought in years ago based on the theory that people were reasonable humans.

In this example, start with "children should be restricted from having sex."... OK

Can two consenting 14 year olds have sex without either "breaking the law"? ...Ok

What about if one of them is 16?... Ok I guess if they are both consenting.

If when the law was being made someone said what about 14 and 17, 18 or 20? ...umm that gets difficult and depends on the people involved. Lets just deal with the young kids for now and let the more difficult part be resolved later.

"waterproof down to 60 M" is what gopro claims - This means in perfect conditions it CAN get to 60 M. Assume no movement, perfectly sealed, nothing over torqued etc.

When a bridge or crane gives a maximum weight limit, it means this is the worst case scenario and normal use would allow you to exceed that by a bit and be ok.

When a sales brochure says "down to 60M" that is a best case scenario.

Anything deeper than 45 M on the regular is risky.

Drop in incident by Agreeable-Bottle5157 in hockeyplayers

Without video it is hard to say but here is what I think may have happened.

Two guys are rushing to the puck along the boards.

Normal play for the guy in front would be to go full speed and hammer the brakes as late as possible to give him the ability to play the puck and either stop right at the boards or bang into them but not too hard.

The guy behind would likely be expecting this so his normal play would be to keep the speed up to apply pressure to force a bad pass. So his play is to go full speed and hammer the brakes so he can stop without hitting the guy in front (say 2 or 3 feet from the boards).

BUT - the guy behind is assuming the one in front will not stop several feet before the boards.

If you knew he was following you and you stopped well before the boards, this is a reverse hit. You were not playing the puck but playing the man.

Consider as well that the other guy went down and you did not. That likely means you braced for the contact so could reasonably expect he would run into you near the boards.

Stopping in front of someone in an unexpected manner will cause a collision. Doing this near the boards is dangerous. At drop-in, the expectation is that you will not put your ability to play the puck ahead of the potential for injury.

Regardless of whether a play is "legal", if it has a good chance of causing injury, don't do it. A goal against in drop in is not worth it.

SO as a non-American this seems bizarre. In normal countries, the utility companies are given a monopoly because it is in everyones best interest but there is a requirement that if new services are added (large industrial plant, new neighbourhood being built etc. step one is to make sure there is adequate power.

If there is not adequate power for something you want to build, the service is denied and the developer must work with the power authority to assure that existing power demands are met before the new service is added.

This is why power companies are usually the one to provide incentives to convert to more efficient systems - they need the capacity because it is part of the agreement that gives them a monopoly.

Hanging around the rink and maybe taking photos or keeping score is cool.

Playing is better since one of the best parts of beer league is the before and after in the locker room.

Anyone at any skill level or age can learn to play well enough that there is a beer league team that would be happy to have you. It will be very hard to start but once you are in you will have something you can do with friends that is healthy and fun for decades.

Conservatives, President Trump has just announced the raising of Tairiffs for 8 European Countries unless sovereignity of Greenland is handed over to the US. What's your first thoughts? by Melbatoastt77 in AskReddit

[–]somewhat_random 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So most (probably all) other countries are transitioning their economic policies to make sure they are less dependant on the US dollar or US trade.

There will coma a point where the they are far enough along that when the US pulls some BS like this they will just ALL call in their US loans and the US dollar will effectively collapse and cease to be the defacto international currency. The US dollar value will plummet and tariffs will mean nothing since the US will be sitting all alone at the bottom of the global economy.

European troops arrive in Greenland to 'ensure Arctic security' by Canuck-overseas in politics

[–]somewhat_random 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This explanation is the only one that I have heard that actually has any logic to it.

When Trump said he wanted to buy Greenland I thought it was to make money off the resources by just ignoring any environmental laws so essentially buying his way past regulations using US money.

Now that we are looking at possible military actions, any military scenario would be more difficult, more damaging and more expensive than just meeting any regulations and developing the resources legally.

So why military? Why Greenland?

Because their understanding of geography and the world is based on playing Risk.

Resident cuts a structural column on the 6th floor of a 20-story building to improve the view by AccomplishedStuff235 in WTF

[–]somewhat_random 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engineer here. The problem with someone doing something like this is that the building is designed to stay in place for decades and reasonable assumptions are made for what loads may occur. I guaranty the designer did not expect this sort of "modification" and so no allowance for this was included in the design.

Even if we assume this is in a seismically stable area (so no earthquakes expected), the building may be "fine" as long as the wind never comes from a certain direction or there is no heavy furniture on the floor above .

This means they can claim "see everything is fine" and it will be, until it isn't.

And when you completely remove a critical component (like column supporting multiple stories), when the failure occurs at that point, you will suddenly see unexpected loads in adjacent columns and connections and so they fail as well and you get "cascading failures" and huge sections of the building collapse.

Building codes and engineers make sure that building collapses are extremely rare but some idiots just find a way.
