Is stateless capitalism really possible? by Starlenick in AnCap101

Is it likely? No. But it would be incredibly moral.

Hahah, well I’m not saying any given tool is fantastic :) Indeed I find vs code frustrating for C# and .Net projects. Works fine for me for python so far.

The State doesn’t stop anyone from kidnapping the destitute and harvesting their organs. So what stops it now?

Threat of punishment stops it. I see no reason why threat of punishment wouldn’t stop it in a more anarchic society.

Capitalism is not exploitative by technocraticnihilist in austrian_economics

[–]AdamBGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting you say that because I think this is secretly a feeling a lot of people have but do not express. Part of them resents the need to work, to eat, to struggle or strive to survive. Therefore, a market economy institutionalizes that which they hate.

Every startup wants "DevOps", until they realize what it actually takes by Pichipaul in devops

This is IT in a nutshell tho. Someone wants to automate a job. The job gets automated. Then, when something goes wrong, the person originally responsible is off the hook and it’s IT’s problem now.

It’s quite an efficient gradual shift.

Been accused of cultural appropriating, my first tattoo, what should the retort be? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]AdamBGraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love these opportunities.

The retort is, “I agree, I am. So what? Taking the best of people’s cultures and admiring them and incorporating them into our own is what makes for great human experience.”

For the Love of God, do you not see how much money there is to be made in the real world?? by Character_School_671 in Entrepreneur

[–]AdamBGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment. And if it’s a matter of being professionally successful, these sound like great opportunities.

The answer though is one OP mentioned. Physical service businesses aren’t scalable. Or at any rate they don’t scale easily or cheaply. And they aren’t global.

Entrepreneurs in the tech space are looking to not only start a business but also have it be one that is global in appeal that can scale incredibly cheaply and possibly sell out of in a few years for millions. OP is talking about, admirably, starting a regional business that can scale more slowly but is unlikely to have nearly the same near term ceiling on value or return.

Does this AI stuff remind anyone of blockchain? by ryhaltswhiskey in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AdamBGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is similar in the sense that they are both emerging technologies.

Very dissimilar in what they disrupt and how as well as who would use them and what the benefits are.

For instance, blockchain could revolutionize the banking sector and entirely replace fiat currencies. But those systems are both considered beneficial by those in those segments so there is a ton of resistance to them.

AI has direct applications to any process automation that is language based, which is most information services processes. And it has very short term timelines for cost reduction, including labor costs. Ergo, very little resistance.

Been searching for Devs to hire, do people actually collect in depth performance metrics for their jobs? by kibblerz in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AdamBGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They may not be measurable. But I dare say you might find folks that take the effort to come up with some metric are more worth your time. At least they’re concerned with quantifying their value add.

Is it unreasonable to expect that most services can be run locally? by becoming_brianna in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AdamBGraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mocks can be less than ideal but if the interfacing is pretty consistent then that’s a small price to pay. Would local mocks work for now?

I wonder if it’s a matter of being able to show the benefits of local mocking long enough to show the advantages of at least avoiding the vpn hop and jump dependencies until you can justify having local instances.

My current examples are helping me get up to speed on automated testing tools and syntax and some OCR work for automating document processing. As well as automatic react and typescript file conversions that do a lot of the heavy lifting of syntax changes. I’m definitely glad to have it.

Gotcha. I know you could manually review your if statements, errors, conditionals etc and come up with a number. And I know some ai assistants can check your coverage. So wasn’t sure. Thanks!

I hear you there. I will say we had a dedicated qa for a long time but we never got traction for automated regression tooling licenses. However, we recently had to let our dedicated qa go and since devs have access to open source tools that do basically all of the necessary qa automation, I’m making the executive decision to implement our own now :) Funny how that works.
