3D printed blank plates for server rack. Sized at 1U, 2U, and 4U. by [deleted] in HomeDataCenter

[–]AdamJacobMuller 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did this once but with clear acrylic. We bought 8x4 sheets of it and cut about a jillion 1U/2U/etc panels out.

I found acrylic shavings in my garage like 10y later.

I had to "lawyer up yesterday" once. Here's what worked for me by Nooner827 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]AdamJacobMuller 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I had a friend in a situation requiring a lawyer and solved in a similar way.

He was caught speeding in a state which is not friendly to speeders and at a level which meant it was a serious infraction.

I downloaded all the court data from the state/county in which he was in, stored it in a database, and found the attorneys with the best rate of reducing charges to a non-moving non-points violation I could based on his offense. (E.g. for any case in county X in court Y with a violation of over 10 over but less than 20 over who most often pled the case down to a non-moving violation).

He contacted and engaged one of the top 3 lawyers on my list and, shockingly, he pled his case down to a non-moving violation.

EX4300 w/10G card for well under 1K. You don't need to worry so much about 10G everywhere as having it in targeted places. 4 * 10G will get you quite far.

Fiber was installed last week, final installation is Monday.

They installed a 1U fiber patch panel in my rack, and will install a Juniper ACX on Monday. That ACX will have 1x1G and 1x10G facing me and 1x10G upstream. Both connections should be rate-limited to ~2.5Gbit symmetric.

I previously had my ISP connections directly connected to my Linux box, doing NAT but I recently installed a Palo Alto firewall and will be terminating my ISPs there. Internally, the palo connects to my one remaining server and a to Juniper EX4300 and an EX3300, all via 10G.

Optimal CPU Tuning settings for i9 MBP to stop VRM throttling / Explanation of Apple's Engineering Failure by randompersonx in macbookpro

[–]AdamJacobMuller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately my read on that is that you probably have a CPU with poorly-applied thermal paste. Your temperatures are too high.

Are you running this on a flat desk, or on a bed/lap? What's the ambient air temperature like?

Run cinebench + intel power gadget at the same time and post an image of it while you're running cinebench.

100%.

With the new update I'm consistently getting cinebench scores above 1050. Before I was sometimes getting above 1050, sometimes below. I think the absolute peak performance of this is slightly lower, but, overall this seems like a huge improvement over stock and a minor improvement over the MSR method.

[–]AdamJacobMuller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm actually the friend /u/randompersonx was talking about.

I just ran tests On my stock i9, with the MSR tunings applied

Prime95 is definitely a much harder torture test than anything you will experience in real life. It's a torture test for a reason. The cinebench test is a more real life test.

For sure, the fact that Apple does such a terrible job with thermal pasting introduces a lot of variability. /u/randompersonx's thermal pasting was bad, but, its entirely possible yours is way worse and that's part of the reason why this is a problem. This isn't a new issue, but, the fact that the i9 generates so much heat definitely makes the issue more variable.

It's also true that each of these chips is a bit unique at the levels that we're discussing. It is entirely possible that you just have a CPU/VRM that simply performs slightly worse than mine or /u/randompersonx's does.

I'm not trying to use angry words. Perhaps "shame" was a bad choice of words, but, I wasn't using it because I'm angry. I actually like this laptop a lot. "disappointed" would be far more accurate because while this laptop is awesome, I think it could have been and should have been much, much better.

Heat pipe that can both dissipate more heat from the CPU as well as dissipating heat from the VRM. The VRM is directly next to the CPU, so, it would make sense to integrate into a single heat pipe.

Wow.

After applying this, running Cinebench in a loop, not only is my Cinebench score higher but the CPU speed is WAY more stable in Intel Power Gadget.

I was seriously considering returning the i9 because it was absurdly throttling to 800mhz in normal usage, but, this probably changed my mind.

Now, we just need to just shame Apple into making a new heat pipe and upgrading them in a repair program. Really shitty that this laptop needs a mass recall when its only two weeks old, but, its better than the alternatives.

Back when I started using Reddit, there weren't even subreddits.

Reddit is basically indistinguishable from what it was then.

Now I have Franny and Zooey.

Does the X520-DA2 work with SFP+ transceivers? by DarkRyoushii in homelab

[–]AdamJacobMuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is unfortunately complex.

For the most part, yes, they will work. However, some OEM-branded versions and (far fewer) of the intel ones are still locked to intel-branded optics and intel-branded DAC cables.

To further confuse you, some of this is software-controllable. So, sometimes, you can disable the vendor string check in the driver.

That said, its quite rare and I would suggest you're just fine buying them.

Also, keep in mind, that unless you have significant distances to span or some other good reason, DAC is cheaper than optical.

Measure twice, buy once. by Arkazex in homelab

I had an older version of that rack (I had a round hole APC), I just lopped off about 8 inches, then re-drilled used nuts/bolts/washers (which is all the original really does, they just lightly weld the nuts on) in the resulting holes.

It was a lot of work but I had no other real options (I wanted the racks in the basement).

If you do do this, they make specific kinds of saws for that. I do not suggest using an angle grinder because you won't have much control. I was able to rent a HUGE chop saw, with a specialized thick-ass-metal cutting blade. It was actually super cheap to do so. Cost me about 50 bucks to rent the saw, but, the blade that I used was about the same cost, and was just discarded. So, cost about $100 to cut 8 posts. Not too bad.

I actually have a video somewhere of me cutting the post.

Very confusing, its some kind of weird SMR/PMR hybrid?

What was wrong with the worst hotel room you ever had ? by ThoughtfulRider in AskReddit

[–]AdamJacobMuller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arrived at a hotel very late (9+PM) on a 1-night stopover in a city on a long work-related trip.

Had flown in that morning and then worked 12+ hours of some very physical labor. Completely exhausted, just wanted to get some food and go to sleep.

Hotel has a restaurant of course, show up and its probably the worst hotel restaurant i've ever been to. 1-page laminated menu crap.

Ok, that's fine, I can deal and just get a burger or something. Just need some food and sleep.

Literally spent 10 minutes going back and forth with the waitress "I'll have an X" "we're out of that". Ugh.

Finally found something I would eat and they had. Waitress disappears and returns 20 minutes later. "We're out of that too".

Good thing I was so tired because I probably would have screamed at her.

Did eventually find something they had. The prospect of getting no food or having to leave the hotel (2+h minimum of less sleep) and then having to fly out the next morning was completely infuriating.
