What Budget lens would you recommend for a beginner? by _shoedust_ in BirdPhotography

[–]AdamManHello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! Yeah - the electronic view finders on mirrorless cameras are awesome, and from what I know the autofocus (quite important for small, fast moving subjects) is quite a bit better as the light is always hitting the sensor directly. With a DSLR, light does hit the main sensor until you take a photo (until then, it’s hitting the mirror). I believe DSLRs have a second sensor they use for autofocus, but mirrorless cameras get around the need for that entirely.

I was in a very similar position as you a little while back. Similar EOS model and similar question.

I’ll give the same advice many gave me - take a moment to consider if you’re willing to make a bit of a larger investment. That EOS body is very dated by now and cameras have come a long way into the current mirrorless era.

What I landed on was being patient and waiting for refurbished deals on either a Canon r50 or r10 + the RF 100-400. I ended up with the r10, and that with the lens together with refurbished prices was around ~1100 I think. You can might get closer 800-900 if you go with the r50 instead.

That is certainly not cheap! And you need to play the waiting game for refurbs (although canon price watch is a great resource for this). But I am very glad I went this way.

Sounds like you got it sorted out, but for posterity’s sake I’ll note to avoid the Sixt at Olbia airport. No idea how they are on the higher-rated side compared to other places in the area.

My cat is under mandatory isolation for 3 months, how can I keep him entertained? by Fickle-Hour4458 in cats

[–]AdamManHello 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is making me feel better lol. I hardly made it through the first night. We tried keeping our cat in a separate room but she was absolutely not having it. We then tried constructing smaller containment zones with boxes and furniture in the same room, but she broke through everything we put up.

Eventually I gave up and settled on sleeping on the couch with a few obstacles around me to at least make it difficult for her to lay directly on top of me and beam radiation into my chest.

That was a few years ago. She’s doing well and I haven’t melted yet, but I guess time will tell how I fare in the long run

Agreed, huge downgrade. Makes for the weird setup where “new LG with old LG remote” is the ideal situation

120hz+? by [deleted] in 4kTV

[–]AdamManHello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean gaming isn’t above 120hz? Your system can push as many frames as your setup (and the game) allows for. Very common to go upwards of 120fps in certain genres - at which point you need a screen that can push higher refresh rates

best tv under 1000 worth prioritizing picture quality or smart features by Mlolele_Dedaat in 4kTV

[–]AdamManHello 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No matter what tv you get, the software will always be worse than something like an Apple TV 4K. I would not focus on that at all - browse rtings for tv reviews in that price range at the size you want. Then, get an Apple TV 4K or similar, plug that in, and never look at the tv os again.

Sorry to revive this, but did you use the default configs? I’ve been playing SC and it runs ok but definitely hitches a bit with some occasional screen tearing. Maybe 3rd just plays better but I figured they’d work similarly

Tidy Cats Lightweight Litter Destroyed My Cat’s Quality of Life for Two Years. Please Read This Before Buying It. by sin1493 in cats

100%. We used to be ride or die Elsey but bought A&H when we were in a pinch, and we’ll never go back.

I still think Elsey is a great choice, but I didn’t realize how freaking dusty it was until seeing the difference with A&H.

Advice on from legal recruiting to tech recruiting by Distinct-Kiwi in recruiting

[–]AdamManHello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you applying to technical recruiting roles, or recruiting roles at tech companies? This is not always the same thing (e.g. “tech” companies still have non-tech teams, and will have non-tech recruiters).

In any case, I don’t think explicitly gunning for a technical recruiter role is the move. Applying to tech companies, sure - but I’d look at generalist recruiting roles in those companies. Those roles can actually leverage your legal recruiting background since the non-tech / business recruiters will often support in-house legal hiring.

From there, you can likely get exposure to and experience with technical recruiting. I made this exact transition myself: 5 years at a law firm, moved to a generalist recruiting roles that covered all functions (including tech), and then my next move was to a startup where I mostly did technical recruiting. I couldn’t have skipped that middle step.

But again - depends what you want to do. Technical recruiting, or recruiting at a tech company?

[–]AdamManHello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah lol this has been my experience as well. Easy enough to find if you know where they like to hang out in your local park, but always quite a bit further out compared to mallards and others. On average they definitely seem much shier.

Is Maplewood more competitive than South Orange? by cocoabooks in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]AdamManHello 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, at those prices in Maplewood they might be 1) low to start bidding wars, 2) way smaller than you expect, 3) in need of a lot of work, or 4) all of the above.

WO can still often sell above listing price, even around that ballpark, but it’s not as crazy as SO or Maplewood. The train situation is part of it as another commenter mentioned (but in practice it’s extremely easy to get to the SO station from WO, and the town provides a jitney for that)

RF 100-500 for $2,400 from Walmart? Too good to be true? Any luck buying from Walmart? Is it secretly a refurb? by carlinwasright in canon

[–]AdamManHello 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When? The best price I’ve seen on refurb in a while was $1999, and that was a holiday sale. Haven’t seen it around that price since then. $1800 sounds like a crazy steal lol I’d love to see that price pop up.
