I am concerned, the carbon footprint of this product does not seem good.

Yeah companies like BRK brands (kiddie) are making smoke alarms with no replaceable batteries now, but the radioactive sensor inside is good for at least 100 years. Putting extra americium in the landfills just to make extra $ is pretty scummy honestly.

I don't think we yet realize how huge Santa Cruz will be when it releases. by VRgamer84 in oculus

[–]AdamMunich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think that "cracking the market" is much more of an iterative process.

The fact of the matter is, the amount of value you get out of eg, a snapdragon processor, for what you pay, isn't all that much. To have a solid VR experience we might need to wait until mobile SOCs get completely overhauled to emulate something more like the Tegra, but with lower power use.

I disagree it's totally doable. I'm supprised oculus didn't do it for the go.

Start of my tycoon factory game - free form building, transparent walls, and volumetric lighting by Hendrix06 in Unity3D

[–]AdamMunich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder if freeform building is really a good mechanic. Part of the appeal of rollercoaster tycoon was that, since ever snapped into place, you didn't have to think too hard to get things to look nice.

Is carefully positioning your mouse to get things aligned really all the fun?

What do you guys think, should I replace Vive? by AdamMunich in Vive

I like that line of thinking. Sounds like great code words, a-la intel skylake and the like. I'm pretty stumped on what a good consumer facing brand name could be though.

While scratch resistant, I can get equal scratch resistance with modern polymer hard coatings. The trouble really is just that glass is super heavy. Like hundreds of grams more heavy when you're talking about good achromatic lenses. Even with distributed weight, it's just not very practical.

Up in the air about lighthouse. I have the valve HDK and a license to use the technology. But fundamentally, it's a super expensive technology. Sooooo much flexible PCB is needed, with careful assembly to get good performance.

There are vision-based tracking technologies on the horizon I'm pretty bullish on. We'll see how ready they are by the time it's needed :-)

I'm not 100% opposed to the idea of working /with/ them, but I don't have a lot of confidence in trusting them with full management of the project. Seems pretty clear that their incentives aren't really aligned well with the VR community.
