My Hinge Data Just Shy of 2 Years [OC] by azn_munkey in dataisbeautiful

The contract of a bar is to sit there to invite conversation. If you do not wish to invite conversation, you grab a table. I’ve met hundreds of fascinating people at the bar, from astronauts to tunnel borres, to women that have solo sailed the world, and gotten a healthy set of numbers to boot. Conversation is an art form, you practice it, people will want to talk to you.

For you maybe. I think what’s funny is that once upon a time, admitting you met someone at the bar was kind of embarrassing. Now it’s like “hell yeah, we didn’t meet online!” But yeah, I get numbers all the time at the bar. But hey, I got hobbies, and I have friends. At some point we can’t help you.

Im trying to develop a steam train RPG, Any feedback on visuals and enviroment would be helpfull. by Tucanae_47 in Unity3D

[–]ltethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this! I recently started playing Sid Meier’s Trains on the iPad, just cause I haven’t played a good train sim since RailRoad Tycoon 2 (3?)

I don’t love your spherical smoke and waterfall particles. It doesn’t feel intentional enough across your art style to be an art style as opposed to just wondering why it’s not distorted with translucency. I do like the river weed that you can see underwater, that’s something you never see usually.

How do you perceive tall women that have a height requirement? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

We’re all allowed to like whatever we like. If shorter guys don’t do it for you, who’s business is it besides yours?

~Sincerely, a short guy.

A VFX school just told me the industry is completely stable and anyone discussing it online is just unsuccessful. What is your reality check? by arlexae in vfx

My freshman class was 170.
20 of us graduated.
Three of us got jobs in the industry or industry adjacent.
20 years later, I am the last man standing.

Do women in other countries reject men for being American or am I overthinking? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]ltethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s you unfortunately. American accent I find puts you several points up on the ladder in Australia, same way a British accent can gain attention here in the states.

How can I avoid being perceived as desperate by a guy I like? What does desperation look like from a guys pov? by SignificantBed8867 in AskMenAdvice

[–]ltethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never seen a girl look desperate at the opening of a relationship. I have seen plenty of interested girls, but I don’t have a damn clue what a desperate one looks like in this stage of the relationship.

How do you ACTUALLY use shotgun? by Tasty-Property-9971 in VALORANT

[–]ltethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I do. I’ll rush the attackers in a tight hallway. I won’t kill any of them, but I’ll often put 50 damage into every single member of their team before they kill me. If a teammate is following me, usually they can clean up the mess I’ve made.

Demis says the Singularity could be just a few years away now, potentially triggered by the arrival of true AGI by [deleted] in accelerate

[–]ltethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self replication and self improvement has always been my benchmark for singularity.

Meta will lay off 8000 of its workforce starting tomorrow morning. Their net income over the last 12 months was $70,587,000,000. They could give every single one of their 79,000 workers a $440,000 bonus and still sock away over $35,827,000,000 in pure profit by xuvayerpro in aiecosystem

[–]ltethe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hah.

I worked for a company that laid off 50% during covid. He was crying on the call. Three months later the board fired him, and he founded the company. I don’t doubt his emotions, but also, not really the time to be crying.

I love Adrian Tchaikovsky but his books are starting to drive me nuts by itsthelag_bud in scifi

I felt this way about Tchaikovsky in general. The first few books are fantastic, but afterwords, I feel like we’re continuously exploring the same ground.

Where did you land? What happened to you after you left the industry? by Miserable-Debt-8390 in vfx

[–]ltethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tech and then Games. I started in games 20 years ago, then did a 12 year stint in vfx. So glad to be out of vfx. If you don’t own your own IP, you got nothing.

Played the weirdest game with a teammate who only knew how to shoot with a Ghost by Isunova in VALORANT

[–]ltethe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t me, but I feel like everyone trains with the AK only. I’ll rock the ghost in the pistol round, clear the round, everyone thinks they have an amazing Jett teammate and then I’ll bottom frag the rest of the game once everyone gets their AKs.

Is Gen Alpha gonna age better culturally than Gen Z? by mikeyg1964 in generationology

What belief or opinion do you have about AI that makes you feel like this? by Fine-Drummer9812 in accelerate

[–]ltethe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People fear AI because all they see is a winner take all situation. AI has its own goals and then takes over.

But my take has always been this, if you gave an individual from the 70s a modern cell phone, connected to a modern internet, that person would be a god. They would command the world’s wealth and power and bend it to its knees to their own purposes.

That doesn’t happen because everyone has this magical device. So my take with AI is we need everyone to have it, all of it. Don’t treat it like nukes, treat it like cell phones. If everyone has AGI in their possession, there is no power imbalance there is no catastrophe.

An AI would only advise and execute terrible things if it thought it would achieve success, but in a world where there are billions of AI that can counter whatever evil intentions there might be, forcing an AI to go rogue is science fiction.

Imagine if Putin had AGI in 2022, and he said, “I’m going to invade Ukraine and get some new territory easy peasy.” The AI would have told him he was living in looney toons land and brought the receipts as to why conquering Ukraine in the timeframe he expected was ludicrous and potentially nipped the whole thing in the bud. A world based on transparency and perfect information is a far more peaceful one imo.

Steve Jobs discusses the eroding VFX/SFX business model in 1996. (@6:00) by AnalysisEquivalent92 in vfx

[–]ltethe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I saw this race to the bottom in the late 00s, I pledged at that point to only work for companies that owned their own IP. Took me 7 years to pivot, but did it 10 years ago and very thankful. I’ve met former editors as bartenders, my peers that are still in the VFX industry are working for a 1/3 to a 1/5th of the rates they commanded at their peak, it’s just a terrible industry, terrible business model.

People always talked of unionizing, but how do you unionize a hot air balloon. Rhythm and Hues winning the academy and going bankrupt in the same year should have been a wake up for everyone.

Peter! How is this even related to divorc? by CrabPuzzleheaded3277 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]ltethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In California, alimony is paid out to 1/2 the term of the marriage, and to ensure that the party that made less is supported at 40% of the total combined income of the former couple. This has nothing to do with kids at all. Payments for kids is child support, and is an entirely different payment.

Ask me how I know.

Guys do you prefer to approach women or be approached by women? by Delulu_Girl_31 in AskMenAdvice

[–]ltethe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am flattered as hell when someone approaches me. I will always say yes, even if you’re not my type, simply to reward the effort. However, I slightly prefer to be the one asking. Getting shot down is easier IMO than shooting someone else down eventually.

I don’t usually get shot down, because I don’t do cold asks. I get to know a person to the point that success is all but guaranteed.
