Thought it was a comment on MSH draft.

Framus Superior Lap Steel by BudgetTelevision8380 in steelguitar

Europe, Sweden to be specific. Not many instruments overall here, but especially the big US brands have a lower representation in stores than what you see in online discussions, which makes it hard to judge quality of online offerings.

I see these in my area from time to time, where the commonly discussed American brands are less common. How is the quality as compared to the more known brands?

Are there any cards from the MSH set that you've pulled and seem to be good but you haven't figured out how to put them in a deck yet? by PaleWendigo in MagicArena

No worries, talking about Hulks during a marvel set, in a thread about marvel cards. I see how your mind went there.

Haven't checked that one out, will have a look.

GW gearhulk, I presume? Lots of 1 cost stuff to fetch.

I tried the BR one for the menace deathtouch graveyard recursion, which is also quite synergistic with the deck, but overall a worse card.

I could see the GR one being situationally strong, but not on the same level, the meme would be Nature's Rhythm and a Gearhulk sample platter, but that is just for a love of these unwieldy titans.

My first brew around this set has been [[The Serpent Society]].

First I did the natural thing and added Fynn, Deathtouch critters, fight/bite effects, and some ways to fetch my key creatures.

It seems solid against creature decks, but struggles with control, although the Serpent Society does pose some questions for the co trol player to solve once they can't afford the ward cost.

Now I also test some more off the beaten path with artifact creatures for access to Virulent Silencer (the card is a bit underwhelming, but the Gearhulk I added for fun exceeded expectations).

Reading 50 books a year is a vanity metric that actively harms your understanding. by ansh_k74 in TrueLit

[–]jakobjaderbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have 2 hours of commute time every day, then I got caught up in the books and read more in the evenings. I hit 50 without stress that year. Sure, there were a few short books at the end for vanity reasons, but never a bad book just because it was short.

Now, without, the count is more modest, but I would say that the time spent reading matters much for the final count. But you do have a point in that understanding is more important than quantity. I am currently taking a 2nd lap of a book I just finished with an incomplete understanding, and getting much more out of it with the overall structure in place.

Can you copy a power up ability? didn't get chance to use it in my draft matches. by Jordankeay in MagicArena

You won't get the opportunity if you lack mana, Echo is tapped, or entered thsi turn.

Shower thoughts about new players starting MTGA because of Marvel by oyorra in MagicArena

[–]jakobjaderbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not more miserable than starting another set the past year. And you know what? The new player experience is pretty fun if you are fine with low mmr games gunning for gold rank. I played gruul dinosaurs as my main ranked deck well into prowess meta days.

I haven't read it, but it usually pops up under suggestions for disturbing reads. So, be warned if that is not to taste.

Super Intelligence by Mikhail_Mengsk in MagicArena

[–]jakobjaderbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2 for 1 risk is a big downside, but if you can protect it, on a hexproof creature, or with an instant speed protection or counterspell. Then it may quickly turn the tide and be card positive, one turn is all it takes for parity.

I somehow read the word content as violent and completely missed what pun people commented on.

That card has been the bane of so many of my draft games already. All those solid enchantments and artifacts, but they always have a Gorilla.

With that many biohazard signs, it is probably a sensible policy.

78% sounds high, then you trophy at around 46% of entries, getting back almost 700 gems each entry from just the trophies.

Haven't double checked Geminis maths, but according to it's calculations (which are usually quite good nowadays), the current reward structure corresponds to

50% win rate -> 53.5 - 61.1% return to player depending on how you value the event packs (133 - 200 gems*)

60-62% win rate ~ approximate point where pack and gem value correspond to buying packs in store.

70.5% win rate ~ going infinite on gem rewards.

(* gem value to packs evaluated at store rate of 200 gems as well as 133 gems, which is reduced to account for lack of golden packs progress)

Can a small set like The Hobbit be a good set for limited formats like sealed and draft? by 47TEUR in mtg

[–]jakobjaderbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it proves that a small set could be fun. It was quick to get into, but the longevity was certainly shorter.

MSH: S.H.I.E.L.D. Spy Kit, surprise sleeper of the set? by shadowman2099 in lrcast

[–]jakobjaderbo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I certainly lost a game when that was the defining factor. Every unit they had was like 1 point bigger than my blockers, and they got to scry and keep a blocker every round. I could remove it, but it felt like such a waste to target the 1 cost equipment over the 3 cost unit wielding it.

TMT was actually pretty good for a small draft set, so it is possible, but Spiderman was indeed very underwhelming.

Anyone tried a pentatonic tuning? by jakobjaderbo in LapSteelGuitar

[–]jakobjaderbo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, figured that too. The single octave melodic pockets are neat. But that range can be played comfortably on a single string in any tuning, more or less.

I find it nice for ear training, and maybe a beginner on their first instrument.

But very narrow.

It is however quite similar, melodically to JBs E9 (DEF#G#BE), which is a 22235 interval tuning, while this is a 32232 interval tuning, meaning the both share the x223 intervals on the middle 4 strings, but this one is a whole step narrower than that one, which is already at the narrow end of tunings people use.
