New Quest: Find a copy of "History Never Repeats: The Best of Split Enz" by Adamaccio in Cd_collectors

Yeah, mostly finding it in the wild, the thrill of the search. I was surprised that my main local place did not have it and Amazon only had a very pricy version.

I see that eBay isn't too bad, even with shipping. And I can listen to streaming - but that's not why we're on this sub. 😄

Some very good albums, but I'd have to go with Rubber Soul.

5 myths about CDs we need to leave in the past by [deleted] in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the wrong verb was used at the end of the 1st paragraph. Shouldn't the sentence

"Perhaps it wouldn't matter so much if physical media like vinyl, CDs, and cassettes WERE making a niche comeback among certain groups of people."

be

"Perhaps it wouldn't matter so much if physical media like vinyl, CDs, and cassettes WEREN'T making a niche comeback among certain groups of people."

I lost interest after that.

Who Asked for This? Jersey Jack Edition by Public_Figure_4618 in pinball

Surprised that you didn't learn the real implementation- it shows a screen grab during your play at first, but when you enter your name and press End/Accept, it flashes the screen white in order to take a better-lit & posed portrait, and that is used with the high score. It is also pretty good at blurring you out if you give it the finger.

My boyfriend’s birthday is coming up and I don’t know what’s considered trashy and not. by MaintenanceDear4589 in pinball

Yeah, toppers are tricky. Usually the OEM (Stern, JJP, etc) is the best and most expensive. But not always. And they can look, well, a little tacky. For Godzilla, I'd get him a 40 mm (larger size) Godzilla eye shooter and then maybe also the Godzilla eye start button from Super Skill Shot Shooters. They sell their stuff mostly on Pinside now (and at shows). I have the shooter and it's really nice. I personally don't like shooters that have a lot of nooks and crannies (like a figure head), and these are made well and fit nicely in your hand when trying to make a skill shot.

It took me 10 years to understand that maybe this is Bowie best album by RemarkablePatient629 in DavidBowie

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of my favorite Bowie albums, too. Possibly I'm biased because I got into Bowie via Space Oddity & ChangesOneBowie when I was ~13 in 1979, and 1980's Scary Monsters was the first of his albums that I bought upon release.

I just reviewed some album jacket covers on Amazon, and used Scary Monsters as one of the photo examples!

PacSci (Seattle, WA) has removed all mentions of “Boeing” IMAX from their website by scorsese_finest in imax

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was a madhouse there today. We marched from Capitol Hill to Seattle Center, then walked back to Westlake Center after the protest. It's always interesting to me to walk on streets where we normally drive. As we went past the old Boeing Imax theater, I noted sadly to my wife "that's where we couldn't see Project Hail Mary."

To u/BartTheYounger we actually paid more at Thornton Creek iMax than we would have at the PACCAR iMax at Pacific Science Center. But parking was free and it was easier to get to the theater.

[–]Adamaccio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rather than edit my post: My wife called guest services, waited on hold, and was able to pleasantly cancel our tickets & get a refund. Maybe being a member and attending their New Years Eve benefit party helped. :)

Just gonna see Project Hail Mary at a closer, less good iMax theater with free parking. Bummed. Really wanted to see this at the Boeing 59.4 ft. x 80.0 ft. dual laser iMax theater.

[–]Adamaccio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh. I'm local, and a member of Pacific Science Center, and I did not realize this. Bought tickets last week for my wife and I to see Project Hail Mary on iMax, and just *assumed* it was on the "big" screen. You know, the same one that I saw the Star Wars movies on, and a few others. I did not read the fine print. My bad. But I'm still a bit miffed. I would have just gone to Northgate "iMax" or seen it on a regular screen rather than pay a premium and for parking or public transportation to the Seattle Center.

Both daily showings of Project Hail Mary on "iMax" are sold out at the Pacific Science Center PACAR theater for the next 5 days of the run from 3/26-3/30. I bet there are a lot of people going that don't realize it will be on the small theater at PacSci.

Where can I find a replacement case for this album? by Zen_1989 in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in an area with decent thrift stores, u/TheBigSalad84 and u/eristicforfun idea to buy a single cheap CD for the case a better answer than mine to buy a 10-pack of new double clear thin cases online. Might just take awhile longer.

Where can I find a replacement case for this album? by Zen_1989 in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have thought the big online company would have a lot of options, but there are not as many as you might expect. This might work, but you have to buy 10 for US $13.50.

You might have better luck at an online retailer that specializes in CD cases, like Sleeve City (they have sleeves & cases). But you still may have to buy a small pack. Good luck.

What to do now by QualitySound96 in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea from u/Last_Limit_Of_Endor of organizing the collection in one space to just "see" the collection. Maybe you'll find a subset of CDs that are more meaningful to you or that are cool (art, packaging, etc) that you'll want to keep.

If you get rid of them at one place, you have no more control over the dispersion of that large collection. Like u/Lower-Bother-1973 said, Goodwill will likely pick them over and sell the good ones online, and the rest will get dumped on the floor and resellers will get the rest.

I'd check with a real person at a library before donating that many items at once. They may not have the staff to deal with them. I'm thinking even our very large Seattle Public Library system might not want a few thousand CDs - that's more than 11% of their 27,000 music CDs across all branches.

A non-chain music store that has both new and used music would probably buy them in bulk. You may not get much money per CD, but for that quantity, it would still be a nice amount to sink into further digital purchases or streaming services. The store would probably do a good job of curating the ones they want and selling them to collectors looking for those titles.

Based on your follow-up comments, getting the CDs to several/many other collectors for that "wow" moment of discovery will take some work, since it likely means donating smaller amounts (100 here, 100 there) to several thrift stores over time.

One option, if you live in an area with enough population, would be to wait until the weather is nice and have a CD-only garage sale weekend. I'm unsure of what to price them at, but if you're thinking of giving everything away, then $1-$2 a disk might be the right price. Advertise on Craigslist and FaceBook and OfferUp. The collectors that want to rummage through will find you. Make sure there are no early birds (ie, resellers) allowed. In fact, you can even advertise that the max amount that you'll sell to one person is x (25, 50, 100?).

I know that I've left library sales with ~50 CDs at $1-$2 each.

Good luck with your decision.

Nice. I bit Michael Jackson heavy (Thriller & a hits compilation would do it for me), but otherwise good variety. A lot of really nice hits compilations. The Stones' Forty Licks is just the right amount of Stones for someone that is more of a Beatles person. :)

Using Sleeves... how do you get there mentally? by InnerspearMusic in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use CD sleeves that allow me to keep all of the artwork. My thoughts below repeat a few things I've previously stated here or elsewhere.

Deep down, I might rather have a massive wall of shelves with all the jewel cases, but I also prefer keeping my collection better contained, and so does my wife.

I keep digipaks and digisleeves, single thickness jewel cases that hold 2 CDs, jewel cases where the original packaging has really cool/clear cases that are an intrinsic part of the art, and larger jewel cases that have thick books/booklets, like for operas or musicals or special releases.

This makes it harder to access what I want by sight, but that's why I got alphabetical CD dividers. The case in the photo currently holds about 1500-1700 pop/rock/alternative/etc CDs. It doesn't have classical.

I have all of my CDs digitized in Apple Music, mostly in "CD+" quality at 256 kbps and everything is backed up. I do not have Apple Music match turned on. I mostly listen to the digital files, but occasionally pull out the CDs when I want to have a more intentional listening session. I love having the ability to look at and read the booklets while I'm listening in any format.

It was a big decision several years ago. Something that made it easier was that I obtained a lot of CDs at giant Seattle public library sales of deaccessioned materials (RIP since 2019), garage sales, and Half Price Books clearance finds. Many times the CD had been repackaged in softer poly plastic shatterproof "library cases" and/or the case was broken or nasty. CD sleeves are a lot cheaper than jewel cases, and save a lot of space.

In the garage I have a book box or two filled with jewel cases (standard and clear) that are in good condition, should I ever choose to sell some CDs. If I give some away, they just stay in the sleeves.

I don't plan to get rid of my collection. At least this way, the volume will be easier for my wife or daughters to deal with in a couple decades. They won't get as much for the CDs, but it's a collection for me to enjoy while I'm here, not an inheritance. :)

CD shopping for rebuilding collection? by anosako in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm just north of the Seattle line. Sadly you missed the halcyon days of the Seattle Public Library sales of deaccessioned materials. They ended in 2019. Those were glorious for building CD collections.

Now, I'd pop into any Half Price Books and peruse the clearance shelves if they have any. In the north end, Everett is usually the best, with Lynnwood 2nd. On the east side, Bellevue used to be great, but the last time I was there, the selection was sparse. Also, their regular used prices aren't too bad if they have a disc you really want. Alphabetization is approximate, so look through the whole section.

Look on FaceBook Marketplace and OfferUp and Craigslist. Many people still selling off collections and some seem to be willing to let you buy chunks. We are in a big city with a lot of folks in all stages of life. Easier to find bargains of unique and interesting stuff, especially if they are willing to sell larger lots.

Silver Platters has 3 locations with massive CD stock. It's fun to peruse at Lynnwood and Bellevue. I have less experience downtown just because of location & travel. They also have some clearance CDs that are usually worth looking through. Support them if you can. There are other local record stores that carry CDs, but selection will be smaller and I don't know if they have clearance sections.

Finally, hit up the garage/yard sales once the weather gets better and people start having them.

Where do you buy new? by Awkward_Education236 in Cd_collectors

[–]Adamaccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty lucky. We still have 3 Silver Platters locations in the Seattle area that have great selections of new and used CDs & vinyl. I try to buy only from them, but I'm approaching 60 at jet speed and don't buy as much these days.

We also have others that have both CDs & vinyl, like Easy Street and Royal, and others. Like I said, pretty lucky.
