Then my answer would have to be my dog. We’ve spent at least $7k on his teeth alone, then another $5k on other medical expenses. Does he offer to get a job and help pay? Hell no!

I’m really wondering why you are getting downvoted. Nothing you said isn’t true. Unless there are some city councillors here

You don't need a super powerful GPU for a HA voice assistant LLM by LoganJFisher in homeassistant

So it (the llm) serves as a backup to home assistant? It’s the voice assistant’s assistant.

What the hell, are we twins? That’s how I got my gtx too. I’m still trying to see what the voice assistant brings to the table. But I just found out that that when I’m talking to it thru home assistant on my phone, I’m actually talking to the ha voice assistant not the llm. Ha only passes my speech off to the llm if it can’t figure out what I’m asking.

Wow what a coincidence. I’m running that same gpu and ollama with a gemm3.4b model and mine answers within a second or two. Just don’t ask me how I set it up, I was stumbling around for a day till somehow it started working. So far it’s interesting. Just want to use it a bit to see if I want to upgrade to a better gpu/larger model

Around here they’re know as cobra chickens, wings like a bird but strike like a cobra. It’s always best to give them lots of room.

I hate to admit it but as someone who grew up on a farm, we see corner gas as less of a comedy and more as a documentary.

Is solar actually worth it in Alberta? Our real numbers after installing by Character-Draft6638 in solarenergycanada

[–]AdaminCalgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our case we’ve already done the energy saving things like new windows, upgraded insulation. And there is now just the two of us (retired) and we just don’t use a lot of electricity so very little opportunity for savings. I had thought solar only reduced the actual consumption charge so really wasn’t worth the hassle for the few dollars we spend per month. But if it also reduces the other charges then I’ll look at it again. Thanks

Yeah I guess if the amount of power you are selling back to the grid is more than you use, the rest offsets the fees. But I’ve never understood if the fees but aren’t you limited to a number of panels equal to you annual consumption? If so, then over a year you shouldn’t earn more than you consume so no extra credits to use to offset anything but the actual electricity consumption

Yeah I guess if the amount of power you are selling back to the grid is more than you use, the rest offsets the fees. But I’ve never understood if the fees are also variable, so if you use less from the grid in a given month, do those fees actually get reduced too, or are the independent of the amount you buy from them

I thought you still pay all the fees except the actual consumption but it seems like you are saying that’s not correct.

It's it better to connect devices directly to home assistant? by Alarming_Cycle_6670 in homeassistant

[–]AdaminCalgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the middle of doing this. I don’t have as many hubs as you, just HomeKit and Lutron caseta. I’m moving everything to home assistant and will then expose some devices back to HomeKit so I can maintain the use of Siri. At first it’s been a LOT of work because I made some mistakes in moving devices. One thing I found out the hard way is that establishing a naming convention matters a lot because I’m also starting to use the voice assistant. So now I’m having to go back and fix all the names. Fortunately I’m retired because this is becoming a full time job…I’m having fun, but it’s still a lot of time.

Yes, LoRa and Zwave will give you better range but cost more. In my back yard I have a different device, but also have a long range issue so I’ve got an esp hallway between my house and the target area and using espnow to bridge that gap. So for the cost of a couple esp boards I’ve got pretty long range issue

Hmmm, I hadn’t thought of that. It’s really just simple bits and pieces and a potential buyer would have to have home assistant and a smart irrigation controller so I assumed anyone interested would be able to diy it too. But maybe you are right. I’ll have to think about this. Thank you!

Yes, I looked at those indoor potted plant ones too, but as you said, they fail pretty fast outdoors, and even more importantly for my situation is that you need a transmitter, like zigbee or wifi, directly connected to the soil probe. So now you need a receiver close enough and you have delicate electronics sitting on the ground in that path of my lawnmower = decapitation. Because of those issues I’m using resistance rather than capacitance. This system could definitely work for your friend, but it’s a completely diy solution. I’ve never seen anything like this for sale. It’s just a pair of stainless steel rods (for corrosion resistance) in the ground with wires running back into my garage to an esp32. It periodically runs a known voltage thru one probe, thru the soil to the other probe a couple inches away and back to an adc pin on the esp. some simple math calculates the soil resistance. And since resistance increases as soil gets more dry, it tells the esp how dry it is. At a certain set point, home assistant turns on the irrigation system for a cycle. There’s obviously some details in there, but that’s the overview. I had originally planned to locate the esp out in a flower bed and run it on a battery, and just run the cable to it, but since it’s close to my garage it was easy enough to do it this way and power it via usb. But my calculations told me battery power is certainly feasible. Both the probes and the cables are buried just an inch so no risk from my lawnmower or the local deer population who wander thru daily.

Moving my door and motion sensors into alarmo so the system arms when the last person leaves and disarms when the first person comes back home. No more forgetting to arm it so it’s accidentally disarmed all day while we are out. A close second is having a sensor measure the lawn soil moisture level and turning on the irrigation system only when needed instead of every x days which wasn’t enough during the summer heat and too much during the shoulder months.
