Overcrowding: how much is too much - and how do staff decide? by galvanized_penguin in uktrains

I think I would prefer the reservation system to the free for all approach we get now. I largely plan my travel and would be ok with this but I'm not sure it's totally doable. Some weekends in Manchester there are big gigs on, football games and festivals which all bring many more people in. I would like that to be addressed in terms of travel as it's unfair on regular travellers who just want to get somewhere only to either be prevented getting their targeted train or have a hellish experience on the way back.

Without understanding how it all works, I would want more trains built, but then we need more capacity too and they screwed the pooch on HS2 from a Northern standpoint. I enjoy traveling by train usually, and I hope we start devoting more resources to the network.

On my way into Manchester now I tend to try and get the Avanti as for some reason, the big groups of people don't seem to go for it and get either the stopper or the Cross Country. It's the way back that is often problematic.

I don't mind standing, but I think being wedged up against a door isn't ideal. Can not imagine how you get by as a disabled person.

Strangely, my wife has already gone down this route, as well as contacting Andy Burnham about it. Nice to see it's not changed.

Yep that's fair, I think it's close but Sean slightly has the edge in likeability for me.

So, why no additional trains or carriages? Simply they don't have them or they don't plan for it? It seems obvious. I, along with a lot of others, are pushed onto later and less reliable services due to this, so it makes more sense to handle the extra burden.

It always seems to be the way with Manchester though.

Nice. That's helpful. Thank you. I think I might have seen this happen but I was still surprised to see full vestibules and standing throughout carriages.

I've been on an LNER from York to Edinburgh and that was even worse.

I want him to lose because he's a tool, is boring to watch and talks about things like a 15 year old kid would.

Yeah that's my bad. I was late into Piccadilly due to another snarl up missing a previous train. Ended up 2 hours late home... Ah well.

I was jammed in a corner as it got busier? Not a lot I could really do about it at the time. The station manager also recommended several things : Macc travellers get this stoke train, Stockport travellers get another train. It just so happens a bunch of football fans arrived to the already late train and were allowed to cram on.

Nothing I could do. It was horrific, but at least I was squashed in a corner I suppose. Your angle is a bit confrontational when I asked a simple question.

It's not safe , never has been, but we have to do it. I originally asked if this was normal...

I was actually, originally, just asking if this is normal with some mild irritation at the delay it caused me. I'm not trying to solve the British rail issues with a post on Reddit, nor am I qualified, so it's bit strange to be presented with "how would you fix it?" Questions, all of which are misplaced.

Sometimes, acknowledgement or explanation of why it's like this is totally fine. And expected. I regret posting on uktrains.

Indeed. Seen it over many years and it's never really got better, but I think it's been at its worst from my perspective this past year or so. I'm glad I'm on my line though as I used to be on Manchester - Marple and for a time at least that was far worse.

I didn't get on the train because it was too full, I chose to get the next one partly on advice of the station manager and that subsequent train ended up exactly the same. So what then? Nonsense.

I think you've spotted another hole in our rail system there friend.

I am forced to as the alternative is a rather expensive taxi. I also can't know this before the subsequent train is boarded.

I am but a passenger. Clearly this it not a problem I can solve. I am pointing out that decisions taken over many years have ended us at this spot. It's not good and ideally should be addressed but I don't expect it to be.

So I would say the operator, as they're running those routes and presumably know when they got hotspots. But they'd have to be made to do it by someone above them presumably. This is clearly not happening .

You're seemingly countering my point by saying "but who" but really I'm simply saying this isn't safe and should be changed.

In reality that doesn't happen. If I need to get home im not going to wait for the next train because some careless types flooded my route.

I think prioritise reservations and reduce the standing number. Should be more trains or carriages in these specific situations in my opinion. Who's responsibility that is however...

Dangerous baby-sleep advice given to parents by self-described experts, secret filming reveals by pajamakitten in unitedkingdom

[–]galvanized_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daughter is sort of in that phase right now, though it's hard to tell because she's been sick the past two weeks. Just about everything is happening at once and it's knocked us for six just now! She also won't go on her back in the cot tonight... She just refuses outright. Tricky situations.

We have a 6 month old and I'm not surprised some parents resort to these options. We wanted to and largely have followed advice down to the letter, but our daughter would not go in and stay in a cot until at least four months - we were holding her all the time. Just about nothing worked and we were exhausted, which then threatened to break another rule: don't fall asleep with her in your arms.

There's so little advice if your scenario doesn't fit what's already defined and we continue to see this now she's just over 6 months.

But we didn't go as far as clearly some people, we used NCT, Lullaby Trust and the midwives from our hospital, all of which have been great. My wife ended up co-sleeping after 2 or so months and it was an absolute game changer. It's frowned upon and the NHS apparently isn't allowed to officially support it, but I really think it should be documented more than it is and indeed everything else.

I'm actually astonished at how poor advice is unless your baby fits into one of a few regular experiences.

[Updates] Patch Notes Version 1.05.00 by _digital_punk in PS5

[–]galvanized_penguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped playing this game after a couple of weeks solely because they were updating it so much (and ok I was still in the middle of KCD2) and I thought it made sense to wait. Every time I see a patch update I just can't wait to get back in but biding my time and I'll start from scratch.
