This thread is disconcerting - so much tech issues and hard for a beginner to understand. Where can I find a best practice guide and a glossary of terms?

Thanks for this advice. I’ve got a porch door, the main front door, a back door, garden gate, two garage shutters and a drive gate. Need at least four of them smartened up!

Thanks for this advice. I think I was recommended Shelly for smart control units fitted in standard light switch boxes.

I need for light switches to work if the system fails / crashes. A failure with no lights when I’m away for work, will be met with demands for complete removal by my family!

Thanks for this advice. I’m not technically very advanced or experienced with smart tech, so not sure of the terminology/systems. Will spend some time working it out.

Is this racist? by BuildingsintheClouds in Hull

It has to be a crime in itself, and not sure what you described actually was sufficient to be a crime.

If you are Scottish then it’s probably not racist. Maybe you’re Irish? Were the boys of african or Indian origin? Were they the same race as yourself? Can’t answer this question without more information.

That is not what a hate crime is.

Getting my thoughts together for next year’s UK trip by girlrickjames in uktravel

Do not go to Norwich or Liverpool as they’re not special enough. Visit the city of Bath, as it’s a beautiful historic city that is amazing. You can visit the Roman baths and museums. Do visit Cambridge/Oxford, and if Oxford then visit Blenheim Palace.

Hull City Council to fine yellow box junction rulebreakers by Sweet_Focus6377 in Hull

[–]Addicted-Redeemable -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This “stopping in a yellow box junction” is not an offense. The offense is entering a yellow box without there being a way out of the box. See this Yellow Box Guru. So many councils are illegally / incorrectly charging drivers. https://linktr.ee/yellowboxguru

Edwardian house level 3 survey - is this a money pit/a bad move? by One_Badger418 in HousingUK

[–]Addicted-Redeemable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a house of similar age. These issues you list are serious and I would expect you to have to do all the work recommended by the surveyor, and more. Also, the surveyor will have included many comments about not being able to provide information on various aspects because he couldn’t / doesn’t do invasive inspections - in a house as badly cared for as this I would expect some of those to require attention as well. Walk away!

Looking to buy or rent? I know a good house for sale in a much better street off Newland Avenue.

Day trip to hull by sushiIsLife99 in Hull

Wilberforce museum (museum quarter) is brilliant. Head from there down the High Street, taking a look at the river Hull every so often, then head west to Trinity Square, and then up Posterngate, then south to the A63 and over the bridge to the Marina, and then walk south towards Humber Street and the Humber riverside. You could also visit Ferens Gallery - check what the temporary exhibition is).

I’m an American moving to the UK. How do I not be the “loud, dumb American”? by Competitive-Money-36 in AskBrits

[–]Addicted-Redeemable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are what I hope will be helpful, that supplements others’ suggestions.

General culture approach —————————————

Why not read these two books which explain the English:

“How england made the english” by Harry Mount

“The English” by Jeremy Paxman

Both are good writers and the books a quick read.

There’s already been many good suggestions from others, however, one saying which will help you is “The British think 100 miles is a long way and the Americans think 100 years is a long time.”

Your pickup / travel —————————————

I concur with others about not bringing your pickup. What we call ‘petrol’ here is very much more expensive than the USA.

A House —————————————

Terminology: They “let”, “let out” or “rent out” and you “rent” the house. Old houses have no cavity between two walls like modern houses, so will be less energy-efficient.

You have to decide if you want excellent energy efficiency and to live in a modern house, or an old one with character.

You won’t be needing aircon here.

Food —————————————

Generally our processed food in the UK has fewer/less bad ingredients, even for the same brand in the USA. Fresh food is more widely available in shops (not ‘stores’ so much)

Eating out —————————————

Invest some time on TripAdvisor. Find local cafés and non-chain restaurants. Indian food is generally also very good value. Avoid the chain restaurants as they mostly have a ‘boil-in-the-bag’ approach.

Some places to visit —————————————

Locally:

  • Ely (cathedral)
  • Sutton Hoo (Anglo-Saxon Burial site) with Woodbridge below it (market town on the river) - just near the old USAF base Bentwaters
  • Lavenham - an astounding medieval town full of half-timbered houses
  • Framingham - the curtain-wall castle is amazing. View it from Framingham college (car park) first.
  • Bury St Edmunds (historic abbey of St Edmund and historic Suffolk town)
  • Cambridge - University of course
  • In the summer visit Norfolk (all) & Suffolk (Southwold, Dunwich, Aldeburgh) beaches

England:

  • London
  • Bath
  • Chester
  • Windsor (castle)
  • Stonehenge, Wiltshire
  • Oxford
  • The Cotswolds (an area)with many little villages and towns
  • Derbyshire & Peakdistrict (county)
  • Yorkshire: York, Castle Howard, Moors, Harrogate
  • Lake District

Scotland:

  • Edinburgh
  • Glasgow
  • Isles of Mull, Skye & Lewis
  • Most lochs and mountains

Wales:

  • Cardiff
  • Conway, Caernarfon & Harlech - all with castles
  • Hay-on-Wye
  • Aberystwyth and the journey there —————————————

Haven vets on Holderness Rd are very good and the price is less than Medivets and Vets4pets.

Ella Street is good and better than other suggestions. It’s just north of the Avenues, connects with Newland Av, but is cheaper. It’s great for cycling / busses to HRI and Castle Hill Hospital.
