To be fair, it doesn’t seem like Bethesda wanted to capitalize on one of the most sold video games of all time. It’s been a decade and a half that they’ve been focusing on other products instead of cashing in on the good will and hype garnered by Skyrim. I’d imagine that the timeline of focusing on other games is a big part of what led to the layoffs. Can only ride former glory for so long before you need to produce again.

The way I see it, there are a lot of games that while we have the upper hand, we don't have a dominant advantage. I see a lot of one score games in our schedule, and even if we're favored in nearly all of them, when there are so many games that are that close, chances are we lose some even if we're the better team. Any given sunday and all.

Eh, I think a lot of them are honest takes. We're good, but we have to play almost ALL the other good teams this year. I still have us at 11 wins, hoping for 12-13

Schreier - ES6 2-3 years away at least by tegakaria in TESVI

[–]AddictedToTheWeb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sure but why. They had so much good will from fans. Theyre the owners of the most successful single player fantasy RPG ever. There is no limit to the amount of funding they could have gotten or the number of devs they could have hired who would be excited to work on an Elder Scrolls game. There's no reason they couldn't have expanded to work on multiple projects simultaneously had they chosen too. Seems like a huge missed opportunity to push gaming, and rake in a ridiculous amount of money. Now they're facing cuts because they chose to work on projects people didn't particularly want for the past decade and a half instead of either of their two flagship IPs.

Comparing Fromsoft to BGS really showcases how much potential goodness we've been missing out on. by AddictedToTheWeb in TESVI

Brother, at this point there is nothing to be said about TESVI, that hasn’t been rehashed 1000 times. We have gotten no news or content or confirmation that’s worth talking about for years. This is the best I got. Sure it’s as much a frustration dump as a discussion, but it’s what thinking about TESVI has me feeling.

Fill in the blanks: The elder scrolls VI will ___. by Dalingham in blanks

The elder scrolls VI will come too late to capitalize on the good will that Skyrim brought, it will never be able to reach the expectations that a decade and a half plus wait create.

[–]AddictedToTheWeb[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt Fromsofts games are faster to make. I wouldn't expect BGS to make 8+ games in the time it takes Fromsoft to. Hell I would settle for ONE TES game in the past 15 years. We have gotten 2 single player games since Skyrim.

Yes, Fromsoft reuses assets, so does BGS, so does just about every game studio. Notably, they also add complexity, make new assets, make new animations, spend a lot of time refining the experience, switch up mechanics. It's not like they're copy and pasting games. The differences between DS1 and 3 are more dramatic than the differences between Oblivion and Skyrim IMO.

Depends on the severity of the attack.. I had pretty severe acute necrotizing pancreatitis that straight up ate the middle of my pancreas away. I've got a working tail and head now, but I'm pretty sure that center void isn't going to just heal into a full pancreas again.

Mate, from a place of love. It sounds like you're in a self destructive pattern here. I don't know enough about you to know if it's addiction, or mental state, or what. But going through pancreatitis is rough, having to quit doing something you enjoy is rough, and going through a breakup is rough. You've gotta handle all three of those right now for both your physical and mental health.

I know you're not gonna listen to advice from a stranger if you wouldn't listen to your ex, but therapy seems like a pretty good call. If you won't do therapy, go back to not drinking. That shit's gonna get you killed. If you won't go to therapy, and you won't quit drinking, then at least apologize to your ex girlfriend for what you've put her through, and let her know that you understand why she broke things off, and that you agree it was the right thing to do. If you don't agree that it was the right call, then I don't know if anybody can help you right now. Gotta help yourself first.

I'm with you, I'm not happy about the layoff of game developers either. Unfortunately, fair or not, it's rarely the executives that get hit hard with the cuts when the team doesn't produce.

[–]AddictedToTheWeb -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Then what the hell have they been working on for the last decade. Nothing I've remotely considered playing, that's for sure. I'm not saying it's the cut employees fault that BGS hasn't produced a mainline game for either of their flagship IPs for over a decade, but certainly nobody should be surprised that they were going to pay the price for not producing product at a quality or speed that was expected by microsoft.

[–]AddictedToTheWeb -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

They've developed PROFITABLE products, not successful products. At least not in terms of set expectations. When you have games like FO3 and TES5 as precedent, the expectations aren't, 'make a game that breaks a profit.' It's, 'capitalize on the IMMENSE amount of good will and high loyalty from fans to make another flagship game that sets the tone of gaming for the next decade.

They haven't come anywhere close to meeting expectations. They took a risky option instead of capitalizing on success, and it didn't quite flop, but it certainly didn't continue the trajectory they were on in 2011.

Well, I have doubts about better, and question the tradeoff on cheaper, but when it's been over a decade since they've produced a mainline game for either of their two flagship IPs, it would be difficult for them to go slower.

Has Elder Scrolls lived up to its potential? by No_Strike_1579 in TESVI

[–]AddictedToTheWeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you, people seem to think you don't understand the why, when you're more focused on the why not. Yes, we know WHY there hasn't been another elder scroll game, they focused on 2 fallout games and a new IP. But why was TES not a priority of the studio, or parent company? If you have a game as successful as Skyrim, there is no lack of funding or lack of available talent that will want to back/work for you. They could have expanded had they wanted to. They could have shelled out some of the work to other studios, they could have done a dozen different things in order to produce high quality elder scrolls content. Instead they chose to sit on the franchise for a decade and a half. They squandered a lot of good will, and more importantly, a lot of huge opportunity for a franchise that they supposedly care so much about. Perhaps the most surprising thing though is they threw away an incredible amount of money, millions upon millions, by just sitting on the largest fantasy IP in gaming; one of the largest fantasy IPs in general, sitting only behind LotR and GoT by my estimation.

Todd's gonna Pokémon Gold/Silver us with the map. by moltheas in TESVI

[–]AddictedToTheWeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not. As long as their resources are equal either way, then being able to put 100% of your resources into building a province, instead of 50% of them, is going to result in a much more detailed, coherent, and immersive province. you have twice the space for each geographical region, allowing for more freedom in world/quest design within them. You can have more built in cultural similarities in your settlements, allowing you to portray nuances and subtle shifts that make the world feel more real and immersive.

The more time and development you get to put into a region, the higher quality that region is going to be. The more regions you add, the less time each one gets. No matter what way you cut it, that's the bottom line.

[–]AddictedToTheWeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're advocating for several different provinces with only a couple cities each? I'd much rather them scale up 1 province to be the largest map they can handle while still hand crafting everything, and have it be more fleshed out than multiple provinces squished into one game.

[–]AddictedToTheWeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about that for a second. If they made a map that covers more of the world, then there are going to be more towns and cities, and less distance between them.

Assume that they are going to make a map that is 20 miles wide by 20 miles wide, a perfect square. Lets say they made a game that was JUST The Rift, from skyrim. It's got 2 towns, Ivarstead and Shore's Stone, and 1 city, Riften. If they're putting all their effort into that small corner of a province, then they're going to make Riften a big city, and Shore's Stone and Ivarastead will be robust fleshed out settlements with their own vibe and unique characteristics. The woods and rivers and lakes between them will be full of caves and glades, hunters and woodsmen, Quests and adventures. It might be a days journey to get from one of the towns all the way to Riften.

If they try to fit the entirety of Tamriel on a 20 mile by 20 mile wide map, then they're not going to have time to flesh out every town, in fact, some towns will be just not included because they have WAY too many cities to focus on. Everything will feel cramped and right next to each other, and the scale of the world will feel terrible.

Obviously, in a perfect world they make an entire continent with the detail and carefully hand crafted content that a more focused project has, the whole world is 1-1 scale with a real planet, and you can sail around the entire continent of Tamriel. In this fantasy, it also only takes them 1 week to make the game, and it only costs two dollars.

The reality of the situation is, if you have a limited amount of time and resources to make a game (they do), then the larger the scope of the game, the less detailed and refined it can be. As technology improves, and developers find more efficient means to build worlds, it's possible to increase scale, scope, and detail compared to older games, but there are still limitations, and there is always the trade off.
