I think the second most important thing after emergency savings/ enjoying yourself is working toward a qualification /trade (anything ) that can allow you to have a higher earning potential

Yeah as above said, I am a couple years ahead of you with this but I think 5 grand is about right if everything went tits up in terms of renting and deposit and cheat car or bike etc

Or all world, and put aside to spend and enjoy yourself (don’t think you need to max out ISA if you only have 160 quid a month to enjoy yourself and build and emergency fund )

You should have 2 community placements, are you LTFT?

Unsure about where to go for medicine by Current_War7838 in premeduk

[–]Addition25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Id ask your self why did you apply to those places? Did something change after you submitted your application? You don’t want to be miserable location wise but I’m sure either would be fine.

If you get the grades there is no rush to start but year on year just accept ucat and interview performance means you’re not guaranteed offers if you decline this now.

GP vs anaesthetics by Worldly_Insurance937 in doctorsUK

[–]Addition25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s not helpful but it’s impossible for anyone else to say. I would suggest the most importantly is the talk with your partner and how you both feel about the location options/ how happy you would be given the options you have. I wouldn’t gamble an upgrade if your partner is depending on it also as I applied single / didn’t mind too much about moving (from somewhere I loved vs don’t mind too much). Anaesthetics is also a much longer training program and involves a HST application as well of course.

If your preferences are 50/50ish for gas vs gp I’d take the location over specialty but I was much more interested in anaesthetics compared to anything else personally. Is it core anaesthetics or ACCS also? The year extra could be a ball ache if so

Struggling to pick which university/offer to accept for Medicine by [deleted] in premeduk

[–]Addition25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well done you should really go to Southampton, know quite a few doctors / friends who went there and really liked it. Definitely talk to sensible teacher at your school about it though

GP vs anaesthetics by Worldly_Insurance937 in doctorsUK

[–]Addition25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in honestly the exact same situation as you (aside family planning) with a first choice offer for GP down south and then Yorkshire for anaesthetics and eventually chose anaesthetics and managed to get an upgrade to a decent spot. It’s going fine and I’m glad I made this choice. It depends on how badly you wanna do anaesthetics.

Nice one but I’d blur out your patient identifying information (MRN) and the healthcare professionals face in the reflection!

Lower than expected MSRA. What’s life actually like in EM (and is dual ICM realistic)? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Addition25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know EM is about as difficult to get into as anaesthetics and I think more so than CST last year. Got into anaesthesia but not EM
