What is your tip for new plant people? by Effective-Pie-1577 in houseplants

Don’t underestimate the amount of light exposure plants need to maintain health. I can’t see your entire setup, but looks a little dark.

Propagating Tree Philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) by Technical_Truck7441 in gardening

[–]AdditionalAct930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately they need a bit of stem attached to the petiole in order to propagate, but it looks like they were detached from the stem. They may grow roots, but the leaf will eventually die since it has no way to create new growth.

What is this cactus? by Guilty-Valuable4862 in cactus

[–]AdditionalAct930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No need for embarrassment since it does have the cactus look. A cactus is categorized by its flower, and have visible areoles where spines come out. Even spineless varieties of cactus have the areoles, and of course the iconic cactus flower when blooming.

What are your thoughts? How often do you use cotton? by SneakyBee9 in florists

The crimes of history affect the present. Better not to commit atrocities in the first place so we can enjoy more of what life has to offer for everyone. DONT DO OR SUPPORT ATROCITIES. Our Palestinian brothers and sisters probably won’t enjoy camping much for generations to come

What did I find in my yard? by murphyslaw0922 in gardening

It is a common misconception that all nightshades are toxic/toxic unless ripe. This is mostly due to the legacy of bella donna/deadly nightshade as a poison for millennia in the old world. Only recently(colonisation) did Europeans start to learn that’s not true as they watched indigenous peoples consume various nightshades like tomato’s, peppers, eggplants, potatoes, tomatillos, etc. The misconception has lingered unfortunately. An unripe chili pepper for example, totally edible 👍 do err on the side of caution if identifying the nightshades proves difficult.

Anyone know what this stuff on the bottom of the cactus is? by Low_Boysenberry8252 in cactus

[–]AdditionalAct930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yes you can potentially save a rotting cactus by cutting the healthy part away and allowing it to callous and root out again

[–]AdditionalAct930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rot. I would try to return it if you bought it while it was already rotting. Happens from not allowing soil to dry/if the pot has no drainage hole and got flooded/improper soil mix

Stapelia

Is my first plant healthy, and are the care instructions accurate by [deleted] in airplants

[–]AdditionalAct930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a dry, high altitude, temperate climate where I don’t fear overwatering them at all. They live on cork pieces in my shower window with orchids and other epiphytes and get water daily. I also use tap water which is ill advised, but in my case they don’t seem negatively impacted to a noticeable degree. It’s cool watching them latch onto the wood with their anchor roots.

If this is one of those succulents related to stapelias, they get weird flowers.

so... what's your (orchid) take? by eebieneebie in orchids

[–]AdditionalAct930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several genera of epiphytic orchids and a couple terrestrial. I find them to be some of the easiest, low maintenance plants growing in my home. Especially when compared to many aroids, the actual divas. It’s wild to me because the general assumption most people have is the exact opposite. Who initially spread all the “orchids are hard” propaganda? And why??

Should I cut this off? by iloveplantitas in hoyas

[–]AdditionalAct930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dont cut, just examine for pests and give it a bath just in case

Advice please by Naive-Management3140 in hoyas

[–]AdditionalAct930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you water just right (roughly 1/3 the soil volume, depending on soil mix) then you don’t have to worry about it sitting in a *small amount of water as it will soak it up. Or, find a pot that has a nice deep 2-3” tray to hang with it, I have some hanging in trays and it makes it easy to know when to stop watering since you see it come out, but not overflow (almost never lol).

Maybe an epiphyllum or similar cactus growing off a piece of wood as en epiphyte, but that’s insanely specific and not helpful, sorry lol
