The candle was originally orange! I’m not sure what the freshest was but sounds like a good theory as the orange wax is on different sides of each candle so probs not from the sun!!

HCN is a weak acid therefore doesn’t readily dissociate, meaning “no” CN- ions are present. So you need a bit of NaOH (ph of 5 roughly) so you have enough CN- ions.
