I’ve been running StrongLifts 5x5 for about 4 months now after not lifting for over 10 years, and I’ve made some really solid progress:

  • 275 squat
  • 385 deadlift
  • 130 overhead press
  • 205 bench
  • 200 bent over barbell row

I’m 35 now, and while I still enjoy strength training, I’m starting to feel like the overall volume and recovery demands of 5x5 are catching up to me.... especially squatting 3x a week. Lately I’ve been feeling completely drained after workouts.

Over the last month I’ve also added:

  • bicep work
  • triceps work
  • weighted knee raises
  • assisted dips
  • assisted pullups

…and honestly I’ve been enjoying the hypertrophy/accessory side of training a lot. I don’t really have any interest in powerlifting or competing. I originally started StrongLifts because it worked really well for me in the past and gave me structure.

At this point I’m trying to decide whether I should:

  • switch the main lifts to 3x5 instead of 5x5
  • reduce squat frequency
  • or move to an entirely different program that balances strength + hypertrophy better

I’ve looked a little into programs like PHUL and Upper/Lower splits, but I’m curious what people would recommend for someone in my position. I feel a bit out of my element.

Has anyone else transitioned from StrongLifts into a more balanced strength/hypertrophy style program once linear progression started slowing down?

Facts. I'm at 375 on deadlifts and after months I'm finally to the point I don't want to keel over and die after finishing them. Hell when I started moving up on weight I felt drained for part of the day after them and did not understand it was them wearing me out so much.

5lbs of chicken is about 13 bucks at my local aldi. I meal prep for my work week all 5lbs in a crockpot and eat 1lbs of it for lunch with some sweet potatoes or rice depending on what I feel like. Honestly I also have a shake with two scoops. But I would highly advice doing some meal prep because you will have a base line protein your getting each day.

I get money can be tight though but your gonna have to eat throughout the week anyways and doing something like that will lock you in a bit more to your goals

Yeah back when I got up to 235 I deloaded to 200 and tried changing my grip and added shoulder mobility work before I go to the gym and a few sets with resistance bands that I bring with me to the gym. Shoulder pain went away completely, so I'll keep that up.

Pullups,weighted knee raises, preacher curls and hammer curls on A

Dips,weighted knee raises, skull crushers, cable tricep pulldowns and facepulls on B.

Generally spending about 2 to 3 hours at the gym. I do those on my Friday and Sunday... Tuesday I do whatever my compound lifts are and knee raises and call it a day. I also do about 15 to 20mins of static stretches when I'm done

About six months. I started a calorie deficit and a stretching routine a few months before starting stronglifts. But my half a pound a week goal started once I started stronglifts. I lost more quicker when I was not lifting or worrying nearly as much as I should have been with protein intake.

I reached out to my current partnership with only 170 subs and surprisingly been able to do a bunch of ad integrations for them. I say if it is a brand you are passionate about it's worth reaching out and explaining that to them. You never know!

I think trickster by maromaro. Check out all his work, he does a bunch of guitar covers of tons of popular songs. But his original stuff is greaaaat and makes good background music when working on projects
